Comparison of rosette-shape traces in abyssal terrains: Environmental and faunal implications

Biogenic traces (lebensspuren) result from the activity of benthic organisms on and within the seafloor and are a common feature of deep-sea environments. Rosette-shape traces (RSTs), also referred to as spoke burrows, are a commonly observed and distinctive trace, likely created by echiuran worms during feeding and burrowing. We conduct a quantitative morphometric assessment of RSTs from two contrasting sites at the Porcupine Abyssal Plain Sustained Observatory (PAP-SO; Northeast Atlantic) with similar physico-chemical conditions except for relative sediment compaction, but substantive differences in their megabenthic communities. We quantified RST abundance (numerical density and seafloor cover) and morphological characteristics (spoke number and overlap, spoke length and width, trace area and relative completeness) for 148 individual RSTs observed in some 6800 seafloor photograph (8788 m−2 seafloor area) captured with an autonomous underwater vehicle. We derived two primary results between study sites: (a) individual spoke morphology exhibited no statistically significant differences, while (b) individual trace completeness was significantly different. The consistency in spoke morphometrics reflects our identification of a single RST morphotype, potentially representing a single functional group of echiurans. The difference in trace completeness between sites may have resulted from differences in competition for resource with other megabenthic surface deposit feeders, and not to be directly related to relative sediment compaction. By reference to literature data and observations of similar traces in other deep-sea settings, we further suggest that this connection between trace completeness and resource availability may be more generally applicable in both contemporary ecology and paleoichnology.

The sedimentation, bioturbation and organic matter degradation as revealed by excess 230Th and 210Pb in the Cosmonaut Sea

Sedimentation and bioturbation (the activity of benthic organisms) play an important role in organic matter degradation. The excess 230Th and 210Pb in a sediment core were used to evaluate the sedimentation, bioturbation and organic degradation processes in the Cosmonaut Sea, East Antarctica. Our results show that the sedimentation rate estimated from excess 230Th through the Constant Flux (CF) and Constant Flux and Constant Sedimentation (CFCS) models has changed in the past 200 ka. The mass accumulation and the linear sedimentation rates vary from 0.36 to 0.76 kg m-2 ka-1 and from 0.6 to 1.3 mm ka-1, which are significantly lower than the rates in other Antarctic seas. The stage III (120–202 ka), which corresponds to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 (glacial period), had the lowest sedimentation rate, indicating less sediment input by sea ice expansion. The bioturbation coefficient estimated by excess 210Pb is as low as 0.023 ± 0.003 cm2 a-1, showing inactive benthic activities. The average C/N ratio of organic matter is 7.2 ± 0.4, which is close to that of fresh organic matter and lower than the typical value of deep-sea sediments, indicating that organic matter is less degraded. The degradation rates of organic carbon and organic nitrogen estimated by the bio-diffusion model are 0.61 ka-1 and 0.29 ka-1, respectively, which are significantly lower than previously reported values for Southern Ocean sites. Despite the low sedimentation rate, low rates of bioturbation and inefficient organic matter degradation are conducive to the preservation of organic matter in sediments of the Cosmonaut Sea.

Influence of Macrobenthos (Meretrix meretrix Linnaeus) on Erosion‐Accretion Processes in Intertidal Flats: A Case Study From a Cultivation Zone

AbstractThe activity of benthic organisms can strongly influence sediment dynamics in an intertidal flat. However, few studies have conducted a quantitative assessments of the effect of benthic organisms on erosion‐accretion processes under field conditions. The aim of this study was to quantify the effects of the benthic clam Meretrix meretrix Linnaeus (M. meretrix) on bed erodibility and sediment erosion‐accretion processes in an intertidal flat. Within the cultivation zone at site A, M. meretrix is present in large numbers (up to 137 individuals per square meter). On the other hand, site B is located outside the cultivation zone. At this site, which is only 500 m away from site A alongshore, M. meretrix forms a sparse population with only 3.7 individuals per square meter. The results showed that the critical shear stress for erosion, denoted by τce, was 0.22 and 0.32 N/m2 at sites A and B, respectively, and the magnitudes of bed‐level change were significantly higher at site A than site B. These results reveal the large effect of M. meretrix on decreasing τce, augmenting the erosion rate when the bed shear stress due to combined currents and waves, denoted by τcw, was higher than τce, and conversely enhancing the accretion rate when τcw < τce. The changes induced in these parameters are likely to have a large impact on model predictions of bed erodibility, sedimentary processes, and morphological evolution. Thus, integrated field measurements of hydrodynamic and bed‐level changes, accompanied by simultaneous biological sampling, may help to improve the parameterization of hydro‐sedimentary and morphodynamic models for shallow‐water environments.

How Important is Bioturbation for Sediment‐to‐Water Flux of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Baltic Sea?

In the present study a recently developed benthic flow-through chamber was used to assess the sediment-to-water flux of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) at 4 sites on the Swedish Baltic Sea coast. The flow-through chamber allows for assessment of the potential effect of bioturbation on the sediment-to-water flux of hydrophobic organic contaminants. The sediments at the 4 investigated sites have both varying contamination degree and densities of bioturbating organisms. The flux of individual PAHs measured with the flow-through chamber ranged between 21 and 510, 11 and 370, 3 and 9700, and 62 and 2300 ng m-2 d-1 for the 4 sites. To assess the potential effect of bioturbation on the sediment-to-water flux, 3 flow-through and closed chambers were deployed in parallel at each site. The activity of benthic organisms is attenuated or halted because of depletion of oxygen in closed benthic chambers. Therefore, the discrepancy in flux measured with the 2 different chamber designs was used as an indication of a possible effect of bioturbation. A potential effect of bioturbation on the sediment-to-water flux by a factor of 3 to 55 was observed at sites with a high density of bioturbating organisms (e.g., Marenzelleria spp., Monoporeia affinis, and Macoma balthica of approximately 860-1200 individuals m-2 ) but not at the site with much lower organism density (<200 individuals m-2 ). One site had a high organism density and a low potential effect of bioturbation, which we hypothesize to be caused by the dominance of oligochaetes/polychaetes at this site because worms (Marenzelleria spp.) reach deeper into the sediment than native crustaceans and mollusks. Metatranscriptomes of oil-contaminated marine coastal sediment affected by oil addition and/or by the bioturbating activity of the marine polychaete Hediste diversicolor: Who are the microbial players?

In coastal marine sediment, oxygen fluctuations induced by bioturbating activities are widespread and exert a great influence, not only on the structure and diversity of the microbenthic communities, but also on their activities. Thus, the activity of benthic organisms can have a significant influence on the degradation of hydrocarbons (HC) and can favor the development of hydrocarbonoclastic microorganisms in contaminated marine sediments. Here, we have generated metatranscriptomic data from coastal marine sediments affected by oil addition and/or by the reworking activity of the marine polychaete Hediste diversicolor to gain insights into the active microbial groups involved in the response to oil addition under the oxygen-fluctuating conditions. The preliminary results suggest that the macrofauna promote the diversity of active aerobic hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria in marine sediments, even if its influence cannot be strongly observed at the microbial community expression profiles level.

Benzo(a)pyrene inhibits the role of the bioturbator Tubifex tubifex in river sediment biogeochemistry

The interactions between invertebrates and micro-organisms living in streambed sediments often play key roles in the regulation of nutrient and organic matter fluxes in aquatic ecosystems. However, benthic sediments also constitute a privileged compartment for the accumulation of persistent organic pollutants such as PAHs or PCBs that may affect the diversity, abundance and activity of benthic organisms. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of sediment contamination with the PAH benzo(a)pyrene on the interaction between micro-organisms and the tubificid worm, Tubifex tubifex, which has been recognized as a major bioturbator in freshwater sediments. Sedimentary microcosms (slow filtration columns) contaminated or not with benzo(a)pyrene (3 tested concentrations: 0, 1 and 5mgkg−1) at the sediment surface were incubated under laboratory conditions in the presence (100 individuals) or absence of T. tubifex. Although the surface sediment contaminations with 1mgkg−1 and 5mgkg−1 of benzo(a)pyrene did not affect tubificid worm survival, these contaminations significantly influenced the role played by T. tubifex in biogeochemical processes. Indeed, tubificid worms stimulated aerobic respiration, denitrification, dehydrogenase and hydrolytic activities of micro-organisms in uncontaminated sediments whereas such effects were inhibited in sediments polluted with benzo(a)pyrene. This inhibition was due to contaminant-induced changes in bioturbation (and especially bio-irrigation) activities of worms and their resulting effects on microbial processes. This study reveals the importance of sublethal concentrations of a contaminant on ecological processes in river sediments through affecting bioturbator–microbe interactions. Since they affect microbial processes involved in water purification processes, such impacts of sublethal concentrations of pollutants should be more often considered in ecosystem health assessment.

Biological modifiers of marine benthic seascapes: Their role as ecosystem engineers

Benthic organisms in marine ecosystems modify the environment on different spatial and temporal scales. These modifications, many of which are initially at a microscale, are likely to have large scale effects on benthic seascapes. This is especially so if the species are ecosystem engineers. Most species of infaunal and epifaunal invertebrates and macrophytes contribute at a geophysical or geochemical level. Microorganisms also play a key but currently neglected role. In the intertidal and immediately sublittoral zone, algae and seagrasses, and mussels in mussel beds have received considerable attention. A substantial fossil record also exists. Mathematical modelling of these systems is still in its infancy, although several sophisticated mathematical tools have been applied. The effects of bioturbation and of microorganisms have been less studied, and little is known about the activities of benthic organisms in the deep sea. This paper addresses all these effects, and places them in the context of large scale benthic seascapes and of the extensive literature on species defined as ecosystem engineers in the sea.

In July 1996, a flash flood resulted in the input of 9 million m3 of sediment toward the Bay of Ha! Ha!, leading to the elimination, partly or totally, of the benthic fauna of the bay. In this study, the CT scanner has been used in a highly perturbed environment, the Bay of Ha! Ha!, to both assess (i) the relationships between the variations of tomographic intensities and the sedimentologic parameters of the sedimentary column and (ii) to quantify the biogenic structures resulting from the activity of benthic organisms. Compaction, CaCO3 contents, and granulometry of sediments are the most important influences on the variation of tomographic intensities. The scanner allowed the study and quantification, in a non destructive way, of the sediment occupation by biogenic structures and, more particularly, allowed to further assess most of the relative importance of the fine fraction of biogenic structures (0.250–1 mm) in the surface sediment layer (0–5 cm). Sediment occupation by biogenic structures reached maximal values at the upper part of the sedimentary column and decreased with depth. If sedimentary reworking leads to an increase in the sediment porosity, destabilization generated by the activity of organisms is balanced by the consolidation of the wall of the biogenic structures. Bioturbation resulting from the activity of benthic organisms into the sediments has a significant role on the sedimentary structure and biogeochemical processes. It is therefore necessary to quantify the volume of sediments occupied by biogenic structures to assess the activity of benthic organisms in the sedimentary column.

Burial, exportation and degradation of acyclic petroleum hydrocarbons following a simulated oil spill in bioturbated Mediterranean coastal sediments.

A field study was conducted in a French Mediterranean littoral (Gulf of Fos) in order to determine the role of bioturbation processes during the bioremediation of oil-contaminated sediments. Inert particulate tracers (luminophores) and Arabian light crude oil were deposited at the surface of sediment cores incubated in situ for 2, 6 and 12 months. After incubation, luminophores and hydrocarbons presented roughly similar depth distributions in the sediment, showing a continuous burial of material until 55 mm depth. Short-chain (< or = n-C25) n-alkanes were totally removed from the sedimentary column after 6 months, whereas approximately 20% of heavier n-alkanes (e.g. n-C30) and of isoprenoid hydrocarbons (pristane (Pr) and phytane (Ph)) remained at the end of the experiment. The determination of the degradation constant and the turn-over rate of individual hydrocarbon indicated that C17-25 n-alkanes were degraded two to three times faster than longer homologues and than pristane and phytane. Using the 17alpha,21beta-C30-hopane as an internal inert reference, we could demonstrate that, after 12 months of in situ incubation, 55% of the losses of the n-alkanes < or = C25 and 35% of the losses of the heavier n-alkanes and of Pr and Ph were due to biodegradation processes. These results demonstrate that the activity of benthic organisms can have a significant influence on the qualitative and quantitative fate of acyclic hydrocarbons following a petroleum contamination in marine coastal sediments.
