Inertial active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle in a non-linear velocity dependent friction

We explore the self-propulsion of an active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle with a non-linear velocity dependent friction. Using analytical approach and numerical simulation, we have exactly investigated the dynamical behaviour of the particle in terms of particle trajectory, position and velocity distribution functions in both underdamped as well as overdamped regimes of the dynamics. Analyzing the distribution functions, we observe that for a confined harmonic particle, with an increase in duration of self-propulsion, the inertial particle prefers to accumulate near the boundary of the confinement rather than the mean position, reflecting an activity induced bistability in the presence of nonlinear friction. On the other hand, in the overdamped or highly viscous regime, where the inertial influence is negligible, the sharp peak structure in the distribution across the mean position of the well reveals as usual trapping of the particle with increase in the persistent duration of activity. Moreover, for a free particle, using perturbation method, we have analytically computed the velocity distribution function in the vanishing limit of noise. The distribution interestingly shows the similar attributes as in case of a harmonic well, thus providing an additional effective confining mechanism that can be explained as a decreasing function of effective temperature. In this limit, the analytically computed distribution agrees well with the simulation results.

Active Brownian information engine: Self-propulsion induced colossal performance.

The information engine is a feedback mechanism that extorts work from a single heat bath using the mutual information earned during the measurement. We consider an overdamped active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle trapped in a 1D harmonic oscillator. The particle experiences fluctuations from an inherent thermal bath with a diffusion coefficient (D) and an active reservoir, with characteristic correlation time (τa) and strength (Da). We design a feedback-driven active Brownian information engine (ABIE) and analyze its best performance criteria. The optimal functioning criteria, the information gained during measurement, and the excess output work are reliant on the dispersion of the steady-state distribution of the particle's position. The extent of enhanced performance of such ABIE depends on the relative values of two underlying time scales of the process, namely, thermal relaxation time (τr) and the characteristic correlation time (τa). In the limit of τa/τr → 0, one can achieve the upper bound on colossal work extraction as ∼0.202γ(D+Da) (γ is the friction coefficient). The excess amount of extracted work reduces and converges to its passive counterpart (∼0.202γD) in the limit of τa/τr → high. Interestingly, when τa/τr = 1, half the upper bound of excess work is achieved irrespective of the strength of either reservoirs, thermal or active. Finally, we look into the average displacement of active Brownian particles in each feedback cycle, which surpasses its thermal analog due to the broader marginal probability distribution.

Fluctuating hydrodynamics of active particles interacting via taxis and quorum sensing: static and dynamics

Abstract In this article we derive and test the fluctuating hydrodynamic description of active particles interacting via taxis and quorum sensing, both for mono-disperse systems and for mixtures of co-existing species of active particles. We compute the average steady-state density profile in the presence of spatial motility regulation, as well as the structure factor and intermediate scattering function for interacting systems. By comparing our predictions to microscopic numerical simulations, we show that our fluctuating hydrodynamics correctly predicts the large-scale static and dynamical properties of the system. We also discuss how the theory breaks down when structures emerge at scales smaller or comparable to the persistence length of the particles. When the density field is the unique hydrodynamic mode of the system, we show that active Brownian particles, run-and-tumble particles and active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particles, interacting via quorum-sensing or chemotactic interactions, display undistinguishable large-scale properties. This form of universality implies an interesting robustness of the predicted physics but also that large-scale observations of patterns are insufficient to assess their microscopic origins. In particular, our results predict that chemotaxis-induced and motility-induced phase separation should share strong qualitative similarities at the macroscopic scale.

Work Fluctuations for a Harmonically Confined Active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Particle.

We study the active work fluctuations of an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in the presence of a confining harmonic potential. We tackle the problem analytically both for stationary and generic uncorrelated initial states. Our results show that harmonic confinement can induce singularities in the active work rate function, with linear stretches at large positive and negative active work, at sufficiently large active and harmonic force constants. These singularities originate from big jumps in the displacement and in the active force, occurring at the initial or ending points of trajectories and marking the relevance of boundary terms in this problem.

A run-and-tumble particle around a spherical obstacle: the steady-state distribution far-from-equilibrium

We investigate the steady-state distribution function of a run-and-tumble particle (RTP) evolving around a repulsive hard spherical obstacle. We demonstrate that the well-documented activity-induced attraction translates into a delta-peak accumulation at the obstacle’s surface accompanied by an algebraic divergence of the density profile close to the obstacle. We obtain the full form of the distribution function in the regime where the typical distance run by the particle between two consecutive tumbles is much larger than the obstacle’s size. This finding provides an expression for the low-density pair distribution function of a fluid of highly persistent hard-core RTP. It also advances an expression for the steady-state probability distribution of highly ballistic active Brownian particles and active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particles around hard spherical obstacles.

Thermodynamically consistent model of an active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle

Identifying the full entropy production of active particles is a challenging task. We introduce a microscopic, thermodynamically consistent model, which leads to active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck statistics in the continuum limit. Our minimal model consists of a particle with a fluctuating number of active reaction sites that contribute to its active self-propulsion on a lattice. The model also takes ordinary thermal noise into account. This approach allows us to identify the full entropy production stemming from both thermal diffusion and active driving. Extant methods based on the comparison of forward and time-reversed trajectory underestimate the physical entropy production when applied to the Langevin equations obtained from our model. Constructing microscopic Markovian models can thus provide a benchmark for determining the entropy production in non-Markovian active systems.

Efficient control protocols for an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle.

Designing a protocol to efficiently drive a stochastic system is an active field of research. Here we extend such control theory to an active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) in a bistable potential, driven by a harmonic trap. We find that protocols designed to minimize the excess work (up to linear response) perform better than naive protocols with constant velocity for a wide range of protocol durations.

Active-matter isomorphs in the size-polydisperse Ornstein–Uhlenbeck Lennard–Jones model

This paper studies size-polydisperse Lennard–Jones systems described by active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) dynamics. The focus is on the existence of isomorphs (curves of invariant structure and dynamics) in the model’s three-dimensional phase diagram. Isomorphs are traced out from a single steady-state configuration by means of the configurational-temperature method. Good isomorph invariance of the reduced-unit radial distribution function and the mean-square displacement as a function of time is demonstrated for three uniform-distribution polydispersities, , 23%, and 29%. Comparing to active-matter isomorphs generated by the analytical direct-isomorph-check method, the latter have poorer invariance of the structure, but better invariance of the dynamics. We conclude that both methods can be used to quickly get an overview of the phase diagram of polydisperse AOUP models involving a potential-energy function obeying the hidden-scale-invariance property required for isomorph theory to apply.

Effects of the self-propulsion parity on the efficiency of a fuel-consuming active heat engine.

We propose a thermodynamically consistent, analytically tractable model of steady-state active heat engines driven by both temperature difference and a constant chemical driving. While the engine follows the dynamics of the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle, its self-propulsion stems from the mechanochemical coupling with the fuel consumption dynamics, allowing for both even- and odd-parity self-propulsion forces. Using the standard methods of stochastic thermodynamics, we show that the entropy production of the engine satisfies the conventional Clausius relation, based on which we define the efficiency of the model that is bounded from above by the second law of thermodynamics. Using this framework, we obtain exact expressions for the efficiency at maximum power. The results show that the engine performance has a nonmonotonic dependence on the magnitude of the chemical driving and that the even-parity (odd-parity) engines perform better when the size of the engine is smaller (larger) than the persistence length of the active particle. We also discuss the existence of a tighter upper bound on the efficiency of the odd-parity engines stemming from the detailed structure of the entropy production.

Most probable paths for active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles.

Fluctuations play an important role in the dynamics of stochastic systems. In particular, for small systems, the most probable thermodynamic quantities differ from their averages because of the fluctuations. Using the Onsager Machlup variational formalism we analyze the most probable paths for nonequilibrium systems, in particular, active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles, and investigate how the entropy production along these paths differs from the average entropy production. We investigate how much information about their nonequilibrium nature can be obtained from their extremum paths and how these paths depend on the persistence time and their swim velocities. We also look at how the entropy production along the most probable paths varies with the active noise and how it differs from the average entropy production. This study would be useful to design artificial active systems with certain target trajectories.

Single active particle in a harmonic potential: Question about the existence of the Jarzynski relation.

The interest in active matter stimulates the need to generalize thermodynamic description and relations to active matter systems, which are intrinsically out of equilibrium. One important example is the Jarzynski relation, which links the exponential average of work done in an arbitrary process connecting two equilibrium states with the difference of the free energies of these states. Using a simple model system, a single thermal active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in a harmonic potential, we show that if the standard stochastic thermodynamics definition of work is used, the Jarzynski relation is not generally valid for processes connecting stationary states of active matter systems.

Dynamics of active particles with translational and rotational inertia

Inertial effects affecting both the translational and rotational dynamics are inherent to a broad range of active systems at the macroscopic scale. Thus, there is a pivotal need for proper models in the framework of active matter to correctly reproduce experimental results, hopefully achieving theoretical insights. For this purpose, we propose an inertial version of the active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) model accounting for particle mass (translational inertia) as well as its moment of inertia (rotational inertia) and derive the full expression for its steady-state properties. The inertial AOUP dynamics introduced in this paper is designed to capture the basic features of the well-established inertial active Brownian particle model, i.e. the persistence time of the active motion and the long-time diffusion coefficient. For a small or moderate rotational inertia, these two models predict similar dynamics at all timescales and, in general, our inertial AOUP model consistently yields the same trend upon changing the moment of inertia for various dynamical correlation functions.

Noisy pursuit by a self-steering active particle in confinement (a)

The properties of a cognitive, self-propelled, and self-steering particle in the presence of a stationary target are analyzed theoretically and by simulations. In particular, the effects of confinement in competition with activity and steering are addressed. The pursuer is described as an intelligent active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (iAOUP), confined in a harmonic potential. For the free pursuer, we find universal scaling regimes for the pursuer-target distance in terms of the Péclet number and maneuverability. Steering results in a novel constant mean-distance regime, which broadens with increasing maneuverability. Confinement strongly affects the propulsion direction and leads to a scaling at large Péclet numbers similar to that in the absence of confinement, yet with a pronounced dependence on confinement strength.

Entropy production in active Rouse polymers

Active polymers are the archetype of nonequilibrium viscoelastic systems that constantly consume energy to produce motion. The activity of many biopolymers is essential to many life processes. The entropy production rate quantifies their non-equilibrium nature through the breaking of the time reversal symmetry. In this work we build an analytical model of active polymers as active Rouse polymers where the beads are active OrnsteinUhlenbeck particles (AOUP) and calculate their entropy production. The interactions between the beads are decoupled through the normal mode analysis and the entropy production can be solved analytically. We obtain the contribution of each Rouse mode in the entropy production and the dependence of the entropy production on the polymer properties like length. We find that the entropy production is zero for a passive Rouse polymer in the presence of thermal bath as well as for an active Rouse polymer in the absence of thermal bath. For an active chain in the presence of a thermal bath the entropy production is non-zero. In this case we find that the local temporal entropy production dominates the non-local entropy production.

Configurational temperature in active matter. I. Lines of invariant physics in the phase diagram of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model.

This paper shows that the configurational temperature of liquid-state theory, T_{conf}, defines an energy scale, which can be used for adjusting model parameters of active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) models in order to achieve approximately invariant structure and dynamics upon a density change. The required parameter changes are calculated from the variation of a single configuration's T_{conf} for a uniform scaling of all particle coordinates. The resulting equationsare justified theoretically for models involving a potential-energy function with hidden scale invariance. The validity of the procedure is illustrated by computer simulations of the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones AOUP model, showing the existence of lines of approximate invariance of the reduced-unit radial distribution function and time-dependent mean-square displacement.

Chiral active matter in external potentials.

We investigate the interplay between chirality and confinement induced by the presence of an external potential. For potentials having radial symmetry, the circular character of the trajectories induced by the chiral motion reduces the spatial fluctuations of the particle, thus providing an extra effective confining mechanism, that can be interpreted as a lowering of the effective temperature. In the case of non-radial potentials, for instance, with an elliptic shape, chirality displays a richer scenario. Indeed, the chirality can break the parity symmetry of the potential that is always fulfilled in the non-chiral system. The probability distribution displays a strong non-Maxwell-Boltzmann shape that emerges in cross-correlations between the two Cartesian components of the position, that vanishes in the absence of chirality or when radial symmetry of the potential is restored. These results are obtained by considering two popular models in active matter, i.e. chiral Active Brownian particles and chiral active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles.

Active glassy dynamics is unaffected by the microscopic details of self-propulsion.

Recent years have seen a rapid increase of interest in dense active materials, which, in the disordered state, share striking similarities with the conventional passive glass-forming matter. For such passive glassy materials, it is well established (at least in three dimensions) that the details of the microscopic dynamics, e.g., Newtonian or Brownian, do not influence the long-time glassy behavior. Here, we investigate whether this still holds true in the non-equilibrium active case by considering two simple and widely used active particle models, i.e., active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particles (AOUPs) and active Brownian particles (ABPs). In particular, we seek to gain more insight into the role of the self-propulsion mechanism on the glassy dynamics by deriving a mode-coupling theory (MCT) for thermal AOUPs, which can be directly compared to a recently developed MCT for ABPs. Both theories explicitly take into account the active degrees of freedom. We solve the AOUP- and ABP-MCT equations in two dimensions and demonstrate that both models give almost identical results for the intermediate scattering function over a large variety of control parameters (packing fractions, active speeds, and persistence times). We also confirm this theoretical equivalence between the different self-propulsion mechanisms numerically via simulations of a polydisperse mixture of active quasi-hard spheres, thereby establishing that, at least for these model systems, the microscopic details of self-propulsion do not alter the active glassy behavior.

Active particles driven by competing spatially dependent self-propulsion and external force

We investigate how the competing presence of a nonuniform motility landscape and an external confining field affects the properties of active particles. We employ the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle (AOUP) model with a periodic swim-velocity profile to derive analytical approximations for the steady-state probability distribution of position and velocity, encompassing both the Unified Colored Noise Approximation and the theory of potential-free active particles with spatially dependent swim velocity recently developed. We test the theory by confining an active particle in a harmonic trap, which gives rise to interesting properties, such as a transition from a unimodal to a bimodal (and, eventually multimodal) spatial density, induced by decreasing the spatial period of the self propulsion. Correspondingly, the velocity distribution shows pronounced deviations from the Gaussian shape, even displaying a bimodal profile in the high-motility regions. We thus show that the interplay of two relatively simple physical fields can be employed to generate complex emerging behavior.

Universal framework for the long-time position distribution of free active particles

Active particles self-propel themselves with a stochastically evolving velocity, generating a persistent motion leading to a non-diffusive behavior of the position distribution. Nevertheless, an effective diffusive behavior emerges at times much larger than the persistence time. Here we develop a general framework for studying the long-time behavior for a class of active particle dynamics and illustrate it using the examples of run-and-tumble particle, active Ornstein–Uhlenbeck particle, active Brownian particle, and direction reversing active Brownian particle. Treating the ratio of the persistence-time to the observation time as the small parameter, we show that the position distribution generically satisfies the diffusion equation at the leading order. We further show that the sub-leading contributions, at each order, satisfies an inhomogeneous diffusion equation, where the source term depends on the previous order solutions. We explicitly obtain a few sub-leading contributions to the Gaussian position distribution. As a part of our framework, we also prescribe a way to find the position moments recursively and compute the first few explicitly for each model.

Inertial active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in the presence of a magnetic field.

We consider an inertial active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck particle in an athermal bath. The particle is charged, constrained to move in a two-dimensional harmonic trap, and a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the plane of motion. The steady-state correlations and the mean-square displacement are studied when the particle is confined as well as when it is set free from the trap. With the help of both numerical simulation and analytical calculations, we observe that inertia plays a crucial role in the dynamics in the presence of a magnetic field. In a highly viscous medium where the inertial effects are negligible, the magnetic field has no influence on the correlated behavior of position as well as velocity. In the time asymptotic limit, the overall displacement of the confined harmonic particle gets enhanced by the presence of a magnetic field and saturates for a stronger magnetic field. On the other hand, when the particle is set free, the overall displacement gets suppressed and approaches zero when the strength of the field is very high. Interestingly, it is seen that in the time asymptotic limit, the confined harmonic particle behaves like a passive particle and becomes independent of the activity, especially in the presence of a very strong magnetic field. Similarly, for a free particle the mean-square displacement in the long time limit becomes independent of activity even for a longer persistence of noise cor- relation in the dynamics.
