Estimating pathogen-spillover risk using host-ectoparasite interactions.

Pathogen spillover corresponds to the transmission of a pathogen or parasite from an original host species to a novel host species, preluding disease emergence. Understanding the interacting factors that lead to pathogen transmission in a zoonotic cycle could help identify novel hosts of pathogens and the patterns that lead to disease emergence. We hypothesize that ecological and biogeographic factors drive host encounters, infection susceptibility, and cross-species spillover transmission. Using a rodent-ectoparasite system in the Neotropics, with shared ectoparasite associations as a proxy for ecological interaction between rodent species, we assessed relationships between rodents using geographic range, phylogenetic relatedness, and ectoparasite associations to determine the roles of generalist and specialist hosts in the transmission cycle of hantavirus. A total of 50 rodent species were ranked on their centrality in a network model based on ectoparasites sharing. Geographic proximity and phylogenetic relatedness were predictors for rodents to share ectoparasite species and were associated with shorter network path distance between rodents through shared ectoparasites. The rodent-ectoparasite network model successfully predicted independent data of seven known hantavirus hosts. The model predicted five novel rodent species as potential, unrecognized hantavirus hosts in South America. Findings suggest that ectoparasite data, geographic range, and phylogenetic relatedness of wildlife species could help predict novel hosts susceptible to infection and possible transmission of zoonotic pathogens. Hantavirus is a high-consequence zoonotic pathogen with documented animal-to-animal, animal-to-human, and human-to-human transmission. Predictions of new rodent hosts can guide active epidemiological surveillance in specific areas and wildlife species to mitigate hantavirus spillover transmission risk from rodents to humans. This study supports the idea that ectoparasite relationships among rodents are a proxy of host species interactions and can inform transmission cycles of diverse pathogens circulating in wildlife disease systems, including wildlife viruses with epidemic potential, such as hantavirus.

Seroepidemiological survey for visceral leishmaniasis in dogs from an unaffected municipality of RS in the period 2021-2024

Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is a vector-borne parasitic disease that is expanding geographically, with autochthonous cases recorded in Rio Grande do Sul (RS) since 2008. Indigenous areas such as the municipalities of Pelotas, Rio Grande and Bagé are not part of active epidemiological surveillance for CVL, but the region has predisposing factors for the spread of the disease. The aim of this study was therefore to carry out a seroepidemiological survey of serum samples from dogs treated at a veterinary hospital in a disease-free area. The survey took place over a three-year period, following the current Ministry of Health (MoH) protocol. A total of 2,365 samples from asymptomatic animals were tested, of which 0.8% were seroreactive in the Dual Path Platform (DPP®) screening test. Of the samples that reacted to the DPP®, 37% were seroreactive to the ELISA (Bio-Manguinhos®), one was inconclusive (5.2%), 42% were negative and in 21% no confirmatory test was carried out. It can be concluded that Pelotas, Rio Grande and Bagé, the places of residence of seroreagent animals and CVL-free municipalities, have seroreagent dogs circulating according to the current MH protocol and require attention from epidemiological surveillance.

Daptomycin Use for Persistent Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcal Bacteremia in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

During the last two decades, the incidence of late-onset sepsis (LOS) has increased due to improved survival of premature neonates. Persistent bacteremia (PB) in LOS is defined as more than two positive blood cultures obtained on different calendar days during the same infectious episode. Although rare, PB should be treated aggressively to prevent adverse outcomes. Daptomycin, a lipopeptide antibiotic, has been used in neonates with persistent coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) bacteremia with promising results, but studies reporting on the efficacy and safety of the agent are scarce. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of daptomycin use for persistent CoNS bacteremia in a neonatal cohort. This is a retrospective, observational, single-center study of neonates treated with daptomycin during 2011-2022 in the Tertiary Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the University General Hospital of Patras, Greece. For the years 2011-2022, there were 3.413 admissions to the NICU. During the last 3 years (2020-2022)-the active epidemiological surveillance period-123 infants (out of 851 admissions, 14.4%) developed CoNS bacteremia (LOS). During the study period, twelve infants with PB were treated with daptomycin. They had a median gestational age of 32 weeks (IQR 31-34) and mean (SD) birth weight of 1.840 (867) grams. CoNS bacteremia isolates were s. epidermidis (50%), s. haemolyticus (20%), s. hominis (20%) and s. warneri (10%). The decision to start daptomycin (6 mg/kg/dose twice daily) was taken on median day 10 (ΙQR 7-15) of infection. None of the infants had focal complications or meningitis. Daptomycin therapy caused no renal, hepatic, muscular or gastrointestinal adverse events. One neonate developed seizures, and one death occurred due to multiple complications of prematurity. Most infants (11/12) were successfully treated and eventually had negative blood culture. Daptomycin monotherapy showed an adequate cure rate in premature neonates with persistent CoNS bacteremia in a tertiary NICU. In our study, daptomycin was effective and well tolerated; the safety profile, however, needs to be confirmed in larger studies and randomized controlled trials.

Invasive wild boar (Sus scrofa) as a functional reservoir for the dynamics of Trichinella in the Patagonia region.

Trichinellosis is a zoonotic disease that has been studied mainly in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus). The cycle involves infection in domestic and wild fauna, which fulfill complex ecological roles, where Trichinella spiralis is reported in wild boar (Sus scrofa). The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of trichinellosis in wild boar and evaluate the distance of positive animals to the nearest urbanization areas in Argentina Patagonia. Necropsies were carried out on wild boar hunted in the Nahuel Huapi and Lanín National Parks and surrounding areas. Skeletal muscle samples were collected from 1,694 wild boar and artificial digestion was performed on all samples. Trichinella spp. were found in 96 (5.8%) wild boar (0.2 to 424 Larvae/g). Parasitism in wild boar depends on the distribution of the population in natural and urban areas. Infected wild boar were found near peri-urban areas, demonstrating the importance of routine epidemiological surveillance and sanitary measures in and around cities. More research is needed to identify the Trichinella species that infect wild animals. We recommend the application of active and passive epidemiological surveillance in South America on exotic and native fauna that are hunted and consumed by humans.

Potential Biases of the Transmission Risks of COVID-19 estimated by Contact Tracing Surveys in Japan

Introduction: Contact tracing surveys are being conducted to identify and isolate close contacts of an identified patient to reduce the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). However, the estimates of risk indexes based on information obtained from the surveys and normally used in practice can have biases comparing with true magnitude of risks of infection and spread.Method: We evaluated whether the estimates of the risk indexes obtained from information of the active epidemiological surveillance, contact tracing surveys in Japan, are suitable for quantitative assessment of the risk factors of COVID-19, using pseudo data via a simulation study. We discussed two types of risks considered in the issue of infectious disease, the probability of infection and that of spreading, and the estimates of these risks.Results and Discussion: A naive method to estimate the risks of infection and spreading of COVID-19 is to calculate the ratio of infected patients to close contacts and the ratio of patients who infected others to all the confirmed patients, respectively. However, these estimates could possibly have significant biases and result in being ineffective for both the exploration and the quantitative assessment of the risk factors in the following ordinary cases: a person contacts closely with many confirmed patients, or a confirmed patient contact closely with many people. Then, some steps are needed to reduce such possible biases for the estimation the risks of both the infection and spreading of COVID-19.

Review on Main Arboviruses Circulating on French Guiana, An Ultra-Peripheric European Region in South America.

French Guiana (FG), a French overseas territory in South America, is susceptible to tropical diseases, including arboviruses. The tropical climate supports the proliferation and establishment of vectors, making it difficult to control transmission. In the last ten years, FG has experienced large outbreaks of imported arboviruses such as Chikungunya and Zika, as well as endemic arboviruses such as dengue, Yellow fever, and Oropouche virus. Epidemiological surveillance is challenging due to the differing distributions and behaviors of vectors. This article aims to summarize the current knowledge of these arboviruses in FG and discuss the challenges of arbovirus emergence and reemergence. Effective control measures are hampered by the nonspecific clinical presentation of these diseases, as well as the Aedes aegypti mosquito's resistance to insecticides. Despite the high seroprevalence of certain viruses, the possibility of new epidemics cannot be ruled out. Therefore, active epidemiological surveillance is needed to identify potential outbreaks, and an adequate sentinel surveillance system and broad virological diagnostic panel are being developed in FG to improve disease management.

Isolation of Flaviviruses and Alphaviruses with Encephalitogenic Potential Diagnosed by Evandro Chagas Institute (Pará, Brazil) in the Period of 1954-2022: Six Decades of Discoveries.

Viruses with encephalitogenic potential can cause neurological conditions of clinical and epidemiological importance, such as Saint Louis encephalitis virus, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus, Eastern equine encephalitis virus, Western equine encephalitis virus, Dengue virus, Zika virus, Chikungunya virus, Mayaro virus and West Nile virus. The objective of the present study was to determine the number of arboviruses with neuroinvasive potential isolated in Brazil that corresponds to the collection of viral samples belonging to the Department of Arbovirology and Hemorrhagic Fevers, Evandro Chagas Institute (SAARB/IEC) of the Laboratory Network of National Reference for Arbovirus Diagnosis from 1954 to 2022. In the analyzed period, a total of 1,347 arbovirus samples with encephalitogenic potential were isolated from mice; 5,065 human samples were isolated exclusively by cell culture; and 676 viruses were isolated from mosquitoes. The emergence of new arboviruses may be responsible for diseases still unknown to humans, making the Amazon region a hotspot for infectious diseases due to its fauna and flora species characteristics. The detection of circulating arboviruses with the potential to cause neuroinvasive diseases is constant, which justifies the continuation of active epidemiological surveillance work that offers adequate support to the public health system regarding the virological diagnosis of circulating arboviruses in Brazil.

Organization of training in the context of COVID-19 pandemic demanded the development and implementation of active epidemiological surveillance for acute respiratory infections in students and teaching staff of the Medical University. The study was aimed to identify the features of the COVID-19 epidemic process among students and teaching staff in 2020–2022. The analysis of COVID-19 incidence among students and teaching staff in the academic years 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 was carried out. The study was conducted on 6293 students enrolled in the academic year 2020–2021, 6148 students enrolled in the academic year 2021–2022, and 772 teaching staff members. In the academic year 2020–2021, COVID-19 was detected in 681 students, among whom the cumulative incidence (CI) was 10.83 (95% CI: 10.08-11.61) per 100 students, and 79 teaching staff members, among whom the CI was 10.23 (95% CI: 8.09–12.37); in the academic year 2021–2022 infection was detected in 690 students, the CI was 11.44 (95% CI: 10.64–12.24) per 100 students, and 75 teaching staff members, the CI was 9.71 (95% CI: 7.62%–11.80%). In 26.3% affected individuals, COVID-19 was detected when contacting the University outpatient clinic. The incidence among students living in the dormitories did not exceed that among students living in private apartments (p = 0.36), and no outbreaks were reported. There was a strong positive correlation between the incidence among residents of St. Petersburg and the incidence among students (r = 0.77). Over the entire period, probable setting of transmission was determined in 39.9% of infected individuals, contact most often (15.2%) occurred when working in the health care facilities. The incidence of novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) among students and teaching staff members in the academic years 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 is directly related to their involvement in the COVID-19 epidemic process in St. Petersburg.

Prevalence of Asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Japan.

Real-world evidence of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is needed to understand the prevalence of infection in the Japanese population. To conduct sentinel screening of the Japanese population to determine the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in asymptomatic individuals, with complementary analysis for symptomatic patients as reported by active epidemiologic surveillance used by the government. This cross-sectional study of a sentinel screening program investigated approximately 1 million asymptomatic individuals with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for SARS-CoV-2 infection between February 22 and December 8, 2021. Participants included children, students, employed adults, and older individuals, as well as volunteers to broadly reflect the general Japanese population in the 14 prefectures of Japan that declared a state of emergency. Saliva samples and a cycle threshold (Ct) value of approximately 40 as standard in Japan were used. Polymerase chain reaction testing for symptomatic patients was separately done by public health authorities, and the results were obtained from the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan to complement data on asymptomatic infections from the present study. Temporal trends in positivity and prevalence (including surges of different variants) and demographic associations (eg, age, geographic location, and vaccination status) were assessed. The positive rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection in 1 082 976 asymptomatic individuals (52.08% males; mean [SD] age 39.4 [15.7] years) was 0.03% (95% CI, 0.02%-0.05%) during periods without surges and a maximum of 0.33% (95% CI, 0.25%-0.43%) during peak surges at the Japanese standard Ct value of approximately 40; however, the positive rate would have been 10-fold less at a Ct value of 25 as used elsewhere in the world (eg, UK). There was an increase in patients with a positive PCR test result with a Ct value of 25 or 30 preceding surges in infection and hotspots of asymptomatic infections. In this cross-sectional study of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in the general population of Japan in 2021, as investigated by sentinel surveillance, a low rate of infection was seen in the Japanese population compared with reported levels elsewhere in the world. This finding provides real-world data on the state of infection in Japan.

Molecular detection of Rickettsia felis in fleas and ticks collected from dogs and cats of Puebla, Mexico.

Fleas and ticks represent the two main groups of ectoparasites that infest companion animals. In particular, the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis and several members of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus complex are the main vectors of a wide range of pathogens on the American continent. They are competent vectors for several members of the genus Rickettsia, which encompass at least 15 pathogenic obligate intracellular bacteria that colonize the endothelial cells of vertebrates. In Mexico, 10 species of Rickettsia belonging to three groups have been detected in six species of ectoparasites from dogs in 9 of the 32 states of the country. However, in some larger regions of the country, active epidemiological surveillance has not been carried out. For this reason, the aim of this study was to identify the presence of members of the genus Rickettsia in fleas and ticks of dogs and cats in the state of Puebla, Mexico. A cross-sectional study was carried out to collect ectoparasites of dogs and cats during August to November 2019. Samples were fixed in 70% ethanol and examined to identify the presence of Rickettsia DNA by the amplification and sequencing of specific fragments of the gltA and ompB genes using conventional PCR. The recovered sequences were compared with those deposited in GenBank, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out to identify the position of the pathogens detected with respect to the valid species previously reported worldwide. Additionally, ecological parameters of the ectoparasite infestations were also calculated. We recovered 196 ectoparasites belonging to two species, 33 C. felis felis and 163 R. sanguineus s.l. (Rhipicephalus linnaei), parasitizing 46 hosts (42 dogs and 4 cats) in 11 localities of the state of Puebla. We detected the presence of Rickettsia felis in three pools of C. felis felis, and five from R. sanguineus s.l. Our work provides the first record of R. felis in hard ticks of Mexico and Central America, with new collection localities for this pathogen in central Mexico.

Spatiotemporal monitoring of myxomatosis in European wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems.

A long-term active epidemiological surveillance programme was conducted to determine seroprevalence to myxoma virus (MYXV), infection prevalence and spatiotemporal patterns and factors associated with MYXV circulation in wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Spanish Mediterranean ecosystems. A total of 2376 animals were sampled over four study periods: 2009-2012 (P1), 2012-2015 (P2), 2015-2018 (P3) and 2018-2021 (P4). Antibodies against MYXV were detected by a commercial indirect ELISA in 59.9% (1424/2376; 95% CI: 58.0-61.9) of wild rabbits. At least one seropositive animal was detected on 131 (96.3%) of 136 game estates sampled. MYXV infection was confirmed by PCR in 94 of 1063 (8.8%; 95% CI: 7.3-10.7) wild rabbits. Circulation of the novel recombinant MYXV (ha-MYXV) was not found in wild rabbits analysed during P4. Five statistically significant spatiotemporal clusters of high MYXV seroprevalence were identified using a Bernoulli model: one in P2 and four in P3. A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) analysis identified sampling season (autumn), age (adult and juvenile), outbreaks of myxomatosis in the month prior to sampling, mean annual temperature, humidity and seropositivity to rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus as factors potentially linked with MYXV seropositivity. GLMM analysis identified outbreaks of myxomatosis in the month prior to sampling, MYXV seropositivity and presence of lesions compatible with myxomatosis as factors associated with MYXV infection. The results indicate high exposure, widespread but non-homogeneous distribution, and endemic circulation of MYXV in wild rabbit populations in southern Spain during the last decade. Prevalence of antibodies against MYXV showed fluctuations both within the year and over the study periods, revealing variations in the immunity of wild rabbit populations in Mediterranean ecosystems that could increase the risk of MYXV re-emergence in immunologically naïve populations. The present study highlights the importance of long-term surveillance to better understand the epidemiology of MYXV in wild lagomorphs.

Assessment of the surgical site infection in colon surgery and antibiotic prophylaxis adequacy: a multi-center incidence study

IntroductionSurgically site infections (SSIs) are a major problem that limits the benefits of surgical interventions. The cumulative incidence of SSIs in colon surgery and compliance with antibiotic prophylaxis as well as the causes of non-compliance were evaluated. MethodsMulti-centre prospective surveillance study between 2012 and 2019 in seven hospitals of the Canary Health Service using an active epidemiological surveillance system. SSIs was defined according to the criteria of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ResultsIn 2019, the cumulative incidence of SSIs was 10.6% (n = 80), which implies maintaining the downward trend since 2012. The appearance of SSIs was more frequent during admission (76%). Surgical prophylaxis was adequate in 81.2%, the main causes of inadequacy being the excessive duration of the antimicrobial prescription (49%) and failure in the indication (33%). The incidence was higher in the group of organ-space infections (53.75% of the total) compared to superficial and deep infections. ConclutionThe cumulative incidence of SSIs obtained is similar to that calculated in other studies carried out under similar conditions. Preoperative chemoprophylaxis was adequate in most of the interventions.

Factors associated with time lag between symptom onset and reporting in the first epidemic wave of COVID-19 in Osaka, Japan

ObjectivesLonger reporting lags after symptom onset reportedly exert a substantial impact on onward transmission, increasing outbreak probability. Our study investigated the risk factors associated with reporting lag. MethodsUsing active epidemiological surveillance data for all symptomatic cases reported in Osaka Prefecture during the first wave of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic (February 1–May 13, 2020), multivariable regression analyses were implemented to estimate the effects of exposure variables on reporting lag, by controlling for potential confounders. ResultsCases in their 30s showed a longer reporting lag than cases ≥ 80 years old. Cases who lived in areas with a high COVID-19 incidence demonstrated a longer reporting lag. Cases with a history of visiting a nightlife district also showed longer reporting lag than cases without such a history. Healthcare workers and cases with immunodeficiency both displayed shorter reporting lags than others. ConclusionIdentifying newly infected cases as soon as possible and increased testing capacity for all age groups, and for individuals with a history of visiting high infection-risk areas, represented important measures in shortening reporting lags in the first wave period. The evidence from this study may provide lessons for controlling future emerging diseases.

Estimated Costs Associated with Surgical Site Infections in Patients Undergoing Cholecystectomy.

Among healthcare-associated infections, surgical site infections (SSIs) are the most frequent in Spain. The aim of this work was to estimate the costs of SSIs in patients who underwent a cholecystectomy at the Hospital General Universitario de Alicante (Spain) between 2012–2017. This was a prospective observational cohort study. The Active Epidemiological Surveillance Program at our hospital recorded all the cholecystectomies performed. Risk factors associated with the development of SSIs were determined by multivariate analysis and two homogeneous comparison groups were obtained by using the propensity score. The number of extra days of hospital stay were recorded for patients with an SSI and with the cost per hospitalised day data, the additional cost attributed to SSIs was calculated. A total of 2200 cholecystectomies were considered; 110 patients (5.0%) developed an SSI. The average length of hospital stay was 5.6 days longer among patients with an SSI. The cost per SSI was EUR 1890.60 per patient, with the total cost for this period being EUR 207,961.60. SSIs after cholecystectomy lead to a prolongation of hospital stay and an increase in economic costs. It is essential to implement infection surveillance and control programs to reduce SSIs, improve patient safety, and reduce economic burden.

Genetic Characterization of Brucella spp.: Whole Genome Sequencing-Based Approach for the Determination of Multiple Locus Variable Number Tandem Repeat Profiles.

Brucellosis is an important zoonosis that is emerging in some regions of the world, gaining increased relevance with the inclusion of the causing agent Brucella spp. in the class B bioterrorism group. Until now, multi-locus VNTR Analysis (MLVA) based on 16 loci has been considered as the gold standard for Brucella typing. However, this methodology is laborious, and, with the rampant release of Brucella genomes, the transition from the traditional MLVA to whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based typing is on course. Nevertheless, in order to avoid a disruptive transition with the loss of massive genetic data obtained throughout the last decade and considering that the transition timings will vary considerably among different countries, it is important to determine WGS-based MLVA alleles of the nowadays sequenced genomes. On this regard, we aimed to evaluate the performance of a Python script that had been previously developed for the rapid in silico extraction of the MLVA alleles, by comparing it to the PCR-based MLVA procedure over 83 strains from different Brucella species. The WGS-based MLVA approach detected 95.3% of all possible 1,328 hits (83 strains×16 loci) and showed an agreement rate with the PCR-based MLVA procedure of 96.4% for MLVA-16. According to our dataset, we suggest the use of a minimal depth of coverage of ~50x and a maximum number of ~200 contigs as guiding “boundaries” for the future application of the script. In conclusion, the evaluated script seems to be a very useful and robust tool for the in silico determination of MLVA profiles of Brucella strains, allowing retrospective and prospective molecular epidemiological studies, which are important for maintaining an active epidemiological surveillance of brucellosis.

Epidemiological and etiological aspects of enterovirus infection in Russia and Vietnam

The epidemic situation and etiological factors of enterovirus infection in Russia and Vietnam were analysed and compared. The identified strains of enteroviruses of 47 types, which circulated in Russia in 2018–2019, belonged to different species: Enterovirus species A (CV-A2, CV-A4, CV-A6, CV-A8, CV-A10, CV-A16, EV-A71), as well as Enterovirus species B and Enterovirus species C. The strains isolated from 87 children from southern Vietnam hospitalised in 2018–2019 into infectious hospitals while having enterovirus infection with exanthema were also studied. All identified strains were represented by Enterovirus species A: EV-A71 — 59 strains, CV-A10 — 20 strains, CV-A16 — 5 strains, CV-A6 — two strains and CV-A2 — one strain. Out of 59 viruses EV-A71, 53 strains belonged to genotype C4 and 6 strains belonged to genotype B5. The sequences of EV-A71 strains of genotype C4 from South Vietnam formed a monophyletic cluster with the sequences of EV-A71 viruses which circulated during 2016–2018 in different provinces of China, and they were very close to EV-A71 strains of the same genotype from the Yunnan Province. These strains were genetically different from Russian viruses and Vietnamese viruses identified in the years 2003–2005 and 2011– 2012. Most of the cases of enterovirus infection from southern Vietnam (78%) caused by EV-A71 virus of genotype C4 were reported in three provinces located in southern Vietnam in the Mekong Delta. The epidemic process and the etiology of enterovirus infection in Russia and Vietnam have common features. At the same time, the epidemic situation in these countries is not the same. The incidence of enterovirus infection is influenced by geographic, climatic, economic and demographic factors that differ in two countries. In the majority of territories of Russia, the climate is temperate or cold, seasonal rises in the incidence rates of enterovirus infection usually occur in the summer, when people go on vacation, spend a lot of time outdoors and swim in open reservoirs. In Vietnam, a constant high-level temperature, a high population density and a large proportion of children determine the higher incidence of enterovirus infection, especially in the southern provinces of Vietnam, compared to Russia. The fact that more than 20% of the Vietnamese population lives in the Mekong Delta, which is the largest river in Indochina, has a significant impact on the epidemic process of enterovirus infection in South Vietnam. The Mekong River which flows through China, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, and carries huge streams of water, including rainstorm waters and sewages, from all of these countries into the southern provinces of Vietnam, which have the highest incidence rates of enterovirus infection in the country. The results of the research underline the importance of active epidemiological and virological surveillance of enterovirus infection, which plays the key role in informing the public health authorities about the changes in the epidemic situation in order to take appropriate measures and develop the prevention strategies. The goal of anti-epidemic and preventive measures is to reduce the incidence of enterovirus infection and the economic burden of this infection for Russia and Vietnam.

The Association between Wearing a Mask and COVID-19.

With the widespread and increasing number of cases of Coronavirus Disease (2019) globally, countries have been taking preventive measures against this pandemic. However, there is no universal agreement across cultures on whether wearing face masks are an effective physical intervention against disease transmission. We investigated the relationship between mask wearing and COVID-19 among close contacts of COVID-19 patients in the Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. In the Hiroshima Prefecture, a COVID-19 form adapted from the reporting form, “Japanese Surveillance in Post-Extreme Emergencies and Disasters”, was developed to collect data from COVID-19 patients’ close contacts under active epidemiological surveillance at Public Health Centers. The relative risk of COVID-19 for mask users versus non-mask users was calculated. A total of 820 interviewees were included in the analysis and 53.3% of them responded that they wore masks. Non-mask users were infected at a rate of 16.4%, while mask users were infected at a rate of 7.1%. Those who wore masks were infected at a rate of 0.4 times that of those who did not wear masks. (RR = 0.4, 95%CI = 0.3–0.6; Adjusted RR = 0.6, 95%CI = 0.3–0.9). These findings implied that COVID-19 could be avoided to a certain degree by wearing a mask.

Evaluación de la infección de localización quirúrgica en cirugía de colon y adecuación de la profilaxis antibiótica: estudio multicéntrico de incidencia

IntroductionSurgically site infections (SSIs) are a major problem that limits the benefits of surgical interventions. The cumulative incidence of SSIs in colon surgery and compliance with antibiotic prophylaxis as well as the causes of non-compliance were evaluated. MethodsMulti-centre prospective surveillance study between 2012 and 2019 in seven hospitals of the Canary Health Service using an active epidemiological surveillance system. SSIs was defined according to the criteria of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ResultsIn 2019, the cumulative incidence of SSIs was 10.6% (n=80), which implies maintaining the downward trend since 2012. The appearance of SSIs was more frequent during admission (76%). Surgical prophylaxis was adequate in 81.2%, the main causes of inadequacy being the excessive duration of the antimicrobial prescription (49%) and failure in the indication (33%). The incidence was higher in the group of organ-space infections (53.75% of the total) compared to superficial and deep infections. ConclusionThe cumulative incidence of SSIs obtained is similar to that calculated in other studies carried out under similar conditions. Preoperative chemoprophylaxis was adequate in most of the interventions.

No molecular evidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection in companion animals from Veracruz, Mexico.

Active epidemiological surveillance of infectious agents represents a fundamental tool for understanding the transmission dynamics of pathogens and establishing public policies that can reduce or limit their expansion. Epidemiological surveillance of emerging agents, such as the recently recognized severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2), the cause of COVID‐19, is essential to establish the risk of transmission between species. Recent studies reveal that companion animals are organisms susceptible to being infected by this pathogen due to the close contact they have with their owners. For this reason, the aim of the present work was to detect the presence of SARS‐CoV‐2 in dogs and cats in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, where there is active transmission of this microorganism in human populations. Oral and nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected from dogs and cats with a history of exposure to patients with COVID‐19. Total RNA was extracted and detection of viral genes N1 and N2 was performed by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR). All 130 samples of companion animals tested by RT‐qPCR for SARS‐CoV‐2 were negative at the time they were collected. This study represents the second active surveillance of SARS‐CoV‐2 in populations of domestic dogs and cats in Latin America and the first approach in Mexico. Given that coronaviruses have shown a high capacity to be transmitted between species, it is imperative to establish measures to prevent this agent from entering and establishing in populations of companion animals.
