Structural and functional brain alterations in subthreshold depression: A multimodal coordinate-based meta-analysis.

Imaging studies of subthreshold depression (StD) have reported structural and functional abnormalities in a variety of spatially diverse brain regions. However, there is no consensus among different studies. In the present study, we applied a multimodal meta-analytic approach, the Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE), to test the hypothesis that StD exhibits spatially convergent structural and functional brain abnormalities compared to healthy controls. A total of 31 articles with 25 experiments were included, collectively representing 1001 subjects with StD. We found consistent differences between StD and healthy controls mainly in the left insula across studies with various neuroimaging methods. Further exploratory analyses found structural atrophy and decreased functional activities in the right pallidum and thalamus in StD, and abnormal spontaneous activity converged to the middle frontal gyrus. Coordinate-based meta-analysis found spatially convergent structural and functional impairments in StD. These findings provide novel insights for understanding the neural underpinnings of subthreshold depression and enlighten the potential targets for its early screening and therapeutic interventions in the future.

Shared and Specific Neural Correlates of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Meta-Analysis of 243 Task-Based Functional MRI Studies.

To investigate shared and specific neural correlates of cognitive functions in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), the authors performed a comprehensive meta-analysis and considered a balanced set of neuropsychological tasks across the two disorders. A broad set of electronic databases was searched up to December 4, 2022, for task-based functional MRI studies investigating differences between individuals with ADHD or ASD and typically developing control subjects. Spatial coordinates of brain loci differing significantly between case and control subjects were extracted. To avoid potential diagnosis-driven selection bias of cognitive tasks, the tasks were grouped according to the Research Domain Criteria framework, and stratified sampling was used to match cognitive component profiles. Activation likelihood estimation was used for the meta-analysis. After screening 20,756 potentially relevant references, a meta-analysis of 243 studies was performed, which included 3,084 participants with ADHD (676 females), 2,654 participants with ASD (292 females), and 6,795 control subjects (1,909 females). ASD and ADHD showed shared greater activations in the lingual and rectal gyri and shared lower activations in regions including the middle frontal gyrus, the parahippocampal gyrus, and the insula. By contrast, there were ASD-specific greater and lower activations in regions including the left middle temporal gyrus and the left middle frontal gyrus, respectively, and ADHD-specific greater and lower activations in the amygdala and the global pallidus, respectively. Although ASD and ADHD showed both shared and disorder-specific standardized neural activations, disorder-specific activations were more prominent than shared ones. Functional brain differences between ADHD and ASD are more likely to reflect diagnosis-related pathophysiology than bias from the selection of specific neuropsychological tasks.

Effect of acupuncture for anisometropic amblyopia: A randomized clinical trial and potential mechanism: 针刺治疗屈光参差性弱视:一项随机对照试验及其潜在起效机制

ObjectiveTo evaluate the effect of acupuncture on anisometropic amblyopia (AA) and explore its potential mechanism for children with AA. MethodsSeventy-six children with monocular AA were randomized into a conventional treatment group and a combined treatment group of acupuncture and conventional treatment, with 38 patients in each group. In the conventional treatment group, on the base of patching regimen, the red flashing, grating and visual stimulation were delivered. Each approach lasted for 5 min per session and was given once every two days, three times a week, for 4 consecutive weeks. In the acupuncture-combined treatment group, on the base of the regimen of conventional treatment group, acupuncture was applied to Jingming (BL1), Cuanzhu (BL2), Fengchi (GB20) and Guangming (GB37), with needles retained for 20 min per session, once every two days, three times of intervention a week and for 4 consecutive weeks. Before and after treatment, the best corrected vision acuity (BCVA) was observed to evaluate the clinical effect in the two groups. Before treatment started, 15 patients with AA on left side were randomized selected from each group and the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was operated before and after treatment. Simultaneously, eight healthy children with normal visual acuity were recruited to be the normal control group and received one-time rs-fMRI scanning. Based on the activation likelihood estimation (ALE), the visual “what” pathway network was constructed. By analyzing the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and the regional homogeneity (ReHo), the differences in the regional autonomous function activities in the key brain areas of the “what” pathway were compared among the three groups. Results(1) Clinical effect: After treatment, BCVA was (0.6 [0.5, 0.6]), higher than that (0.4 [0.3, 0.5]) before treatment, presenting the statistical difference (P < 0.05) in the conventional treatment group. BCVA was (0.6 [0.6, 0.8]), higher than that (0.4 [0.4, 0.5]) before treatment, presenting the statistical difference (P < 0.05) in the acupuncture-combined treatment group. BCVA in the acupuncture-combined treatment group was higher than that of the conventional treatment group (P < 0.05) after treatment. The total effective rate was 86.1% in the acupuncture-combined treatment group, higher than that (65.8%) of the conventional treatment group (P < 0.05). (2) Mechanism: ① ALFF: In comparison with the healthy control group, the ALFF in the primary visual cortex of the “what” pathway for AA children was reduced significantly (P < 0.05), and ALFF in the right fusiform gyrus and the right inferior temporal gyrus increased significantly when compared with the healthy children (P < 0.05). Compared with that before treatment, there was no significant difference in the brain areas of the “what” pathway after treatment in the conventional treatment group (P > 0.05). In the acupuncture-combined treatment group, ALFF in the right inferior occipital gyrus and the right fusiform gyrus of the “what” pathway increased after treatment when compared with that before treatment (P < 0.05). After treatment, in comparison with the conventional treatment group, there was no significant difference in the brain areas of “what” pathway in the acupuncture-combined treatment group (P > 0.05). ② ReHo: ReHo in the right inferior occipital gyrus, the right fusiform gyrus and the right inferior temporal gyrus in the “what” pathway was elevated significantly in AA children when compared with that in the healthy control group (P < 0.05). ReHo of the left inferior occipital gyrus and the left fusiform gyrus increased significantly after treatment when compared with that before treatment in the conventional treatment group (P<0.05). ReHo of the right inferior occipital gyrus, the left and the right fusiform gyrus increased significantly after treatment when compared with that before treatment in the acupuncture-combined treatment group (P < 0.05). After treatment, ReHo of the right inferior temporal gyrus in the “what” pathway in the acupuncture-combined treatment group was significantly higher than that of the conventional treatment group (P < 0.05). ConclusionThe acupuncture combined with conventional treatment improves BCVA and the total effective rate of AA children. The changes in the regional function activity of the brain areas within the “what” pathway were dominated by the compensatory increase of the autonomous activity in the occipital lobe (inferior occipital gyrus) and the temporal lobe (inferior temporal gyrus) in AA children. Both conventional treatment and acupuncture can enhance the intensity of autonomous function activities in the occipital lobe (inferior occipital gyrus) and the temporal lobe (fusiform gyrus / inferior temporal gyrus) in the “what” pathway so as to relieve visual impairment. ReHo in the inferior temporal gyrus in the acupuncture-combined treatment group was higher than that of the conventional treatment group and it suggests that the inferior temporal gyrus may be the key brain area to the improvement of visual function in the “what” pathway.

Contributions of the left and right thalami to language: A meta-analytic approach.

Despite a pervasive cortico-centric view in cognitive neuroscience, subcortical structures including the thalamus have been shown to be increasingly involved in higher cognitive functions. Previous structural and functional imaging studies demonstrated cortico-thalamo-cortical loops which may support various cognitive functions including language. However, large-scale functional connectivity of the thalamus during language tasks has not been examined before. The present study employed meta-analytic connectivity modeling to identify language-related coactivation patterns of the left and right thalami. The left and right thalami were used as regions of interest to search the BrainMap functional database for neuroimaging experiments with healthy participants reporting language-related activations in each region of interest. Activation likelihood estimation analyses were then carried out on the foci extracted from the identified studies to estimate functional convergence for each thalamus. A functional decoding analysis based on the same database was conducted to characterize thalamic contributions to different language functions. The results revealed bilateral frontotemporal and bilateral subcortical (basal ganglia) coactivation patterns for both the left and right thalami, and also right cerebellar coactivations for the left thalamus, during language processing. In light of previous empirical studies and theoretical frameworks, the present connectivity and functional decoding findings suggest that cortico-subcortical-cerebellar-cortical loops modulate and fine-tune information transfer within the bilateral frontotemporal cortices during language processing, especially during production and semantic operations, but also other language (e.g., syntax, phonology) and cognitive operations (e.g., attention, cognitive control). The current findings show that the language-relevant network extends beyond the classical left perisylvian cortices and spans bilateral cortical, bilateral subcortical (bilateral thalamus, bilateral basal ganglia) and right cerebellar regions.

Common and specific activations supporting optic flow processing and navigation as revealed by a meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies.

Optic flow provides useful information in service of spatial navigation. However, whether brain networks supporting these two functions overlap is still unclear. Here we used Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) to assess the correspondence between brain correlates of optic flow processing and spatial navigation and their specific neural activations. Since computational and connectivity evidence suggests that visual input from optic flow provides information mainly during egocentric navigation, we further tested the correspondence between brain correlates of optic flow processing and that of both egocentric and allocentric navigation. Optic flow processing shared activation with egocentric (but not allocentric) navigation in the anterior precuneus, suggesting its role in providing information about self-motion, as derived from the analysis of optic flow, in service of egocentric navigation. We further documented that optic flow perception and navigation are partially segregated into two functional and anatomical networks, i.e., the dorsal and the ventromedial networks. Present results point to a dynamic interplay between the dorsal and ventral visual pathways aimed at coordinating visually guided navigation in the environment.

Where alcohol use disorder meets interoception: A meta-analytic view on structural and functional neuroimaging data.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) has been associated with changes in the processing of internal body signals, known as interoception. Changes in brain structure, particularly in the insula, are thought to underlie impaired interoception. As studies specifically investigating this association are largely lacking, this analysis takes an approach that compares meta-analytic results on interoception with recently published meta-analytic results on gray matter reduction in AUD. A systematic literature search identified 25 eligible interoception studies. Activation likelihood estimation (ALE) was used to test for spatial convergence of study results. Overlap between interoception and AUD clusters was tested using conjunction analysis. Meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) and resting-state functional connectivity were used to identify the functional network of interoception and to test where this network overlapped with AUD meta-analytic clusters. The results were characterized using behavioral domain analysis. The interoception ALE identified a cluster in the left middle insula. There was no overlap with clusters of reduced gray matter in AUD. MACM analysis of the interoception cluster revealed a large network located in the insulae, thalami, basal nuclei, cingulate and medial frontal cortices, and pre- and postcentral gyri. Resting state analysis confirmed this result, showing the strongest connections to nodes of the salience- and somatomotor network. Five of the eight clusters that showed a structural reduction in AUD were located within these networks. The behavioral profiles of these clusters were suggestive of higher-level processes such as salience control, somatomotor functions, and skin sensations. The results suggest an altered salience mapping of interoceptive signals in AUD, consistent with current models. Connections to the somatomotor network may be related to action control and integration of skin sensations. Mindfulness-based interventions, pleasurable touch, and (deep) transcranial magnetic stimulation may be targeted interventions that reduce interoceptive deficits in AUD and thus contribute to drug use reduction and relapse prevention.

The Functional Neuroimaging of Autobiographical Memory for Happy Events: A Coordinate-Based Meta-Analysis.

Neuroimaging studies using autobiographical recall methods investigated the neural correlates of happy autobiographical memories (AMs). The scope of the present activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was to quantitatively analyze neuroimaging studies of happy AMs conducted with autobiographical recall paradigms. A total of 17 studies (12 fMRI; 5 PET) on healthy individuals were included in this meta-analysis. During recall of happy life events, consistent activation foci were found in the frontal gyrus, the cingulate cortex, the basal ganglia, the parahippocampus/hippocampus, the hypothalamus, and the thalamus. The result of this quantitative coordinate-based ALE meta-analysis provides an objective view of brain responses associated with AM recollection of happy events, thus identifying brain areas consistently activated across studies. This extended brain network included frontal and limbic regions involved in remembering emotionally relevant positive events. The frontal gyrus and the cingulate cortex may be responsible for cognitive appraisal processes during recollection of happy AMs, while the subthalamic nucleus and globus pallidus may be involved in pleasure reactions associated with recollection of happy life events. These findings shed light on the neural network involved in recalling positive AMs in healthy individuals, opening further avenues for future research in clinical populations with mood disorders.

Vulnerable brain regions in adolescent major depressive disorder: A resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD) is a significant mental health concern that often leads to recurrent depression in adulthood. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) offers unique insights into the neural mechanisms underlying this condition. However, despite previous research, the specific vulnerable brain regions affected in adolescent MDD patients have not been fully elucidated. To identify consistent vulnerable brain regions in adolescent MDD patients using rs-fMRI and activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis. We performed a comprehensive literature search through July 12, 2023, for studies investigating brain functional changes in adolescent MDD patients. We utilized regional homogeneity (ReHo), amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) and fractional ALFF (fALFF) analyses. We compared the regions of aberrant spontaneous neural activity in adolescents with MDD vs healthy controls (HCs) using ALE. Ten studies (369 adolescent MDD patients and 313 HCs) were included. Combining the ReHo and ALFF/fALFF data, the results revealed that the activity in the right cuneus and left precuneus was lower in the adolescent MDD patients than in the HCs (voxel size: 648 mm3, P < 0.05), and no brain region exhibited increased activity. Based on the ALFF data, we found decreased activity in the right cuneus and left precuneus in adolescent MDD patients (voxel size: 736 mm3, P < 0.05), with no regions exhibiting increased activity. Through ALE meta-analysis, we consistently identified the right cuneus and left precuneus as vulnerable brain regions in adolescent MDD patients, increasing our understanding of the neuropathology of affected adolescents.

The Dark and Gloomy Brain: Grey Matter Volume Alterations in Major Depressive Disorder–Fine-Grained Meta-Analyses

Background. While the brain correlates of major depressive disorder (MDD) have been extensively studied, there is no consensus conclusion so far. Various meta-analyses tried to determine the most consistent findings, but the results are often discordant for grey matter volume (GMV) atrophy and hypertrophy. Applying rigorous and stringent inclusion criteria and controlling for confounding factors, such as the presence of anxiety comorbidity, we carried out two novel meta-analyses on the existing literature to unveil MDD signatures. Methods. A systematic literature search was performed up to January 2023. Seventy-three studies on MDD patients reporting GMV abnormalities were included in the first meta-analysis, for a total of 6167 patients and 6237 healthy controls (HC). To test the effects of anxiety comorbidity, we conducted a second meta-analysis, by adding to the original pure MDD sample a new cohort of MDD patients with comorbid anxiety disorders (308 patients and 342 HC). An activation likelihood estimation (ALE) analysis and a coordinate-based mapping approach separate for atrophy and hypertrophy were used to identify common brain structural alterations among patients. Results. The pure MDD sample exhibited atrophy in the left insula, as well as hypertrophy in the bilateral amygdala and parahippocampal gyri. When we added patients with comorbid anxiety to the original sample, bilateral insula atrophy emerged, whereas the hypertrophy results were not replicated. Conclusions. Our findings revealed important structural alterations in pure MDD patients, particularly in the insula and amygdala, which play key roles in sensory input integration and in emotional processing, respectively. Additionally, the amygdala and parahippocampal gyrus hypertrophy may be related to MDD functional overactivation to emotional stimuli, rumination, and overactive self-referential thinking. Conversely, the presence of anxiety comorbidity revealed separate effects which were not seen in the pure MDD sample, underscoring the importance of strict inclusion criteria for investigations of disorder-specific effects.

Functional and structural abnormalities of the speech disorders: a multimodal activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Speech disorders are associated with different degrees of functional and structural abnormalities. However, the abnormalities associated with specific disorders, and the common abnormalities shown by all disorders, remain unclear. Herein, a meta-analysis was conducted to integrate the results of 70 studies that compared 1843 speech disorder patients (dysarthria, dysphonia, stuttering, and aphasia) to 1950 healthy controls in terms of brain activity, functional connectivity, gray matter, and white matter fractional anisotropy. The analysis revealed that compared to controls, the dysarthria group showed higher activity in the left superior temporal gyrus and lower activity in the left postcentral gyrus. The dysphonia group had higher activity in the right precentral and postcentral gyrus. The stuttering group had higher activity in the right inferior frontal gyrus and lower activity in the left inferior frontal gyrus. The aphasia group showed lower activity in the bilateral anterior cingulate gyrus and left superior frontal gyrus. Across the four disorders, there were concurrent lower activity, gray matter, and fractional anisotropy in motor and auditory cortices, and stronger connectivity between the default mode network and frontoparietal network. These findings enhance our understanding of the neural basis of speech disorders, potentially aiding clinical diagnosis and intervention.

Alterations of sleep deprivation on brain function: A coordinate-based resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging meta-analysis.

Sleep deprivation is a prevalent issue that impacts cognitive function. Although numerous neuroimaging studies have explored the neural correlates of sleep loss, inconsistencies persist in the reported results, necessitating an investigation into the consistent brain functional changes resulting from sleep loss. To establish the consistency of brain functional alterations associated with sleep deprivation through systematic searches of neuroimaging databases. Two meta-analytic methods, signed differential mapping (SDM) and activation likelihood estimation (ALE), were employed to analyze functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. A systematic search performed according to PRISMA guidelines was conducted across multiple databases through July 29, 2023. Studies that met specific inclu-sion criteria, focused on healthy subjects with acute sleep deprivation and reported whole-brain functional data in English were considered. A total of 21 studies were selected for SDM and ALE meta-analyses. Twenty-one studies, including 23 experiments and 498 subjects, were included. Compared to pre-sleep deprivation, post-sleep deprivation brain function was associated with increased gray matter in the right corpus callosum and decreased activity in the left medial frontal gyrus and left inferior parietal lobule. SDM revealed increased brain functional activity in the left striatum and right central posterior gyrus and decreased activity in the right cerebellar gyrus, left middle frontal gyrus, corpus callosum, and right cuneus. This meta-analysis consistently identified brain regions affected by sleep deprivation, notably the left medial frontal gyrus and corpus callosum, shedding light on the neuropathology of sleep deprivation and offering insights into its neurological impact.

Neural correlates of willingness to pay for items: A meta-analysis of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies

Willingness to pay (WTP) pervades every marketplace transaction, therefore, understanding how the brain makes bidding decisions is essential in consumer neuroscience. Although some neuroimaging studies have investigated the neural networks of WTP, systematic understanding remains limited. This study identified reliable neural networks activated by the WTP across different reward types and assessed common and distinct neural networks for different reward types (food and other) bids. We conducted an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis on WTP across different reward types (25 studies; 254 foci; 705 participants), and to compared neural representations of WTP for food reward (22 studies; 232 foci; 628 participants) and other rewards (7 studies, 61 foci; 177 participants). The ALE results revealed that the brain centers of WTP for different rewards mainly consist of the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (IFG), bilateral insula, bilateral anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), along with the left caudate. This suggests that neural networks encoding WTP for different rewards consist of brain regions associated with reward processing, cost-benefit calculations, and goal-directed action activities. In addition, consistent activation of the bilateral IFG and bilateral insula for food but no other rewards bids suggest their involvement in the neural network of appetite. WTP for food and other rewards commonly activated ACC, suggesting a common region encoding bids for different rewards. Our findings provide novel insights into neural networks associated with WTP for food and other rewards bids and the mechanisms underlying WTP across different reward types.

Efficacy of Cerebellar Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation for Post-stroke Balance and Limb Motor Function Impairments: Meta-analyses of Random Controlled Trials and Resting-State fMRI Studies.

This study aimed to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of cerebellar transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on balance and limb motor impairments in stroke patients. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials was conducted to assess the effects of cerebellar TMS on balance and motor impairments in stroke patients. Additionally, an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis was performed on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies to compare spontaneous neural activity differences between stroke patients and healthy controls using measures including the amplitude of low frequency fluctuation (ALFF), fractional ALFF (fALFF), and regional homogeneity (ReHo). The analysis included 10 cerebellar TMS studies and 18 fMRI studies. Cerebellar TMS treatment demonstrated significant improvements in the Berg Balance Scale score (p < 0.0001) and the Fugl-Meyer Assessment lower extremity score (p < 0.0001) compared to the control group in stroke patients. Additionally, spontaneous neural activity alterations were identified in motor-related regions after stroke, including the precentral gyrus, putamen, thalamus, and paracentral lobule. Cerebellar TMS shows promise as a therapeutic intervention to enhance balance and lower limb motor function in stroke patients. It is easy for clinical application and addresses the limitations of insufficient direct stimulation depth on the leg area of the cortex. However, further research combining neuroimaging outcomes with clinical measurements is necessary to validate these findings.

Dual-Process Theory of Thought and Inhibitory Control: An ALE Meta-Analysis.

The dual-process theory of thought rests on the co-existence of two different thinking modalities: a quick, automatic, and associative process opposed to a slow, thoughtful, and deliberative process. The increasing interest in determining the neural foundation of the dual-process distinction has yielded mixed results, also given the difficulty of applying the fMRI standard approach to tasks usually employed in the cognitive literature. We report an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis to investigate the neural foundation of the dual-process theory of thought. Eligible studies allowed for the identification of cerebral areas associated with dual-process theory-based tasks without differentiating between fast and slow thinking. The ALE algorithm converged on the medial frontal cortex, superior frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, insula, and left inferior frontal gyrus. These structures partially overlap with the cerebral areas recurrently reported in the literature about the neural basis of the dual-process distinction, where the PARCS theory-based interpretation emphasizes the role of the right inferior gyrus. The results confirm the potential (but still almost unexplored) common ground between the dual-process literature and the cognitive control literature.

Neural Correlates of Symptom Remission Among Adults Receiving EMDR Therapy for PTSD: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 20 Years of Research

The present systematic review and meta-analysis provide an updated assessment of how eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy affects the human brain during treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Brain region activity was assessed using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, and trauma symptom severity was measured using the PTSD Checklist for the DSM-5 (PCL-5). We used PubMed, EMBASE, and ScienceDirect as our primary databases. Selected articles were subjected to seven eligibility criteria, and 22 articles remained for statistical analysis. Article quality was measured using the QUADAS-2 instrument, which showed that our review sample comprised high-quality articles. Statistical analyses implicated a forest plot meta-analysis of PCL-5 scores pretreatment and posttreatment, an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of brain region activation after treatment, and a linear regression analysis that served as our method of statistical synthesis between forest plot and ALE results. Our forest plot showed that EMDR had a robust effect on decreasing PCL-5 scores during treatment (g= −2.92). Our ALE meta-analysis indicated the activation of different regions in the default mode and salience, limbic, and ventral attention networks. Statistical synthesis showed a robust correlation between PCL-5 score decrease and increased brain function (β = −.94). We also measured publication bias in our review sample with a funnel plot and Egger’s test of random effects (p= .280).

The neural networks of touch observation

Abstract Studies have consistently demonstrated that the mere observation of touch engages our own somatosensory cortices. However, a systematic evaluation of the involved networks is missing. Here, we present results of a meta-analytic connectivity modeling (MACM) approach based on clusters revealed by activation likelihood estimation (ALE) combined with resting-state analysis to detect networks subserving our ability to empathize with tactile experiences of other people. ALE analysis revealed 8 clusters in frontal, temporal, and parietal brain areas, which behavioral domain profiles predominantly refer to cognition and perception. The MACM analysis further identified distinct networks that are subserved by subcortical structures, revealed that all clusters involved in touch observation are connected to dorso-medial frontal and anterior cingulate cortex control regions, and showed that medial temporal lobe memory structures do not inform network activation during touch observation (confirmed by post hoc resting-state connectivity analyses). Our data highlight the importance of higher-level control areas and suggest only a minor role for past bodily experiences in the ad hoc perception of other people’s experiences.

Neural circuit disruptions of eye gaze processing in autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia: An activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis

BackgroundImpairment in social cognition, particularly eye gaze processing, is a shared feature common to autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia. However, it is unclear if a convergent neural mechanism also underlies gaze dysfunction in these conditions. The present study examined whether this shared eye gaze phenotype is reflected in a profile of convergent neurobiological dysfunction in ASD and schizophrenia. MethodsActivation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analyses were conducted on peak voxel coordinates across the whole brain to identify spatial convergence. Functional coactivation with regions emerging as significant was assessed using meta-analytic connectivity modeling. Functional decoding was also conducted. ResultsFifty-six experiments (n = 30 with schizophrenia and n = 26 with ASD) from 36 articles met inclusion criteria, which comprised 354 participants with ASD, 275 with schizophrenia and 613 healthy controls (1242 participants in total). In ASD, aberrant activation was found in the left amygdala relative to unaffected controls during gaze processing. In schizophrenia, aberrant activation was found in the right inferior frontal gyrus and supplementary motor area. Across ASD and schizophrenia, aberrant activation was found in the right inferior frontal gyrus and right fusiform gyrus during gaze processing. Functional decoding mapped the left amygdala to domains related to emotion processing and cognition, the right inferior frontal gyrus to cognition and perception, and the right fusiform gyrus to visual perception, spatial cognition, and emotion perception. These regions also showed meta-analytic connectivity to frontoparietal and frontotemporal circuitry. ConclusionAlterations in frontoparietal and frontotemporal circuitry emerged as neural markers of gaze impairments in ASD and schizophrenia. These findings have implications for advancing transdiagnostic biomarkers to inform targeted treatments for ASD and schizophrenia.

Using ALE coordinate-based meta-analysis to observe resting-state brain abnormalities in subjective tinnitus.

A systematic search on MEDLINE/PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases was performed to identify rsfMRI studies on tinnitus published up to October 2022. Coordinates related to the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) brain maps that showed significant differences between tinnitus patients and controls were extracted. Meta-analysis was performed using the activation likelihood estimation method. Data were included from 17 rsfMRI studies that reported a total of 63 distinct foci in ALFF and 46 foci in ReHo. Our meta-analysis revealed several regions where tinnitus patients demonstrated increased ALFF and ReHO values, both individually and collectively, when compared to control subjects. These regions encompassed the insula, middle temporal gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus on both sides. Additionally, increased activity was also noted in the cerebellum posterior lobe bilaterally and the right superior frontal gyrus. This meta-analysis demonstrates a unique pattern of resting-state brain abnormalities involving both the auditory and non-auditory brain regions as neuroimaging markers, which helps understand the neuro-pathophysiological mechanisms of tinnitus.

Functional connectivity in ADHD children doing Go/No-Go tasks: An fMRI systematic review and meta-analysis.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed in childhood. Two common features of ADHD are impaired behavioural inhibition and sustained attention. The Go/No-Go experimental paradigm with concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning has previously revealed important neurobiological correlates of ADHD such as the supplementary motor area and the prefrontal cortex. The coordinate-based meta-analysis combined with quantitative techniques, such as activation likelihood estimate (ALE) generation, provides an unbiased and objective method of summarising these data to understand the brain network architecture and connectivity in ADHD children. Go/No-Go task-based fMRI studies involving children and adolescent subjects were selected. Coordinates indicating foci of activation were collected to generate ALEs using threshold values (voxel-level: p < 0.001; cluster-level: p < 0.05). ALEs were matched to one of seven canonical brain networks based on the cortical parcellation scheme derived from the Human Connectome Project. Fourteen studies involving 457 children met the eligibility criteria. No significant convergence of Go/No-Go related brain activation was found for ADHD groups. Three significant ALE clusters were detected for brain activation relating to controls or ADHD < controls. Significant clusters were related to specific areas of the default mode network (DMN). Network-based analysis revealed less extensive DMN, dorsal attention network, and limbic network activation in ADHD children compared to controls. The presence of significant ALE clusters may be due to reduced homogeneity in the selected sample demographic and experimental paradigm. Further investigations regarding hemispheric asymmetry in ADHD subjects would be beneficial.

Cognitive reappraisal of food craving and emotions: a coordinate-based meta-analysis of fMRI studies.

Growing evidence supports the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal in down-regulating food desire. Still, the neural bases of food craving down-regulation via reappraisal, as well as their degree of overlap vs specificity compared with emotion down-regulation, remain unclear. We addressed this gap through activation likelihood estimation meta-analyses of neuroimaging studies on the neural bases of (i) food craving down-regulation and (ii) emotion down-regulation, alongside conjunction and subtraction analyses among the resulting maps. Exploratory meta-analyses on activations related to food viewing compared with active regulation and up-regulation of food craving have also been performed. Food and emotion down-regulation via reappraisal consistently engaged overlapping activations in dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal, posterior parietal, pre-supplementary motor and lateral posterior temporal cortices, mainly in the left hemisphere. Its distinctive association with the right anterior/posterior insula and left inferior frontal gyrus suggests that food craving down-regulation entails a more extensive integration of interoceptive information about bodily states and greater inhibitory control over the appetitive urge towards food compared with emotion down-regulation. This evidence is suggestive of unique interoceptive and motivational components elicited by food craving reappraisal, associated with distinctive patterns of fronto-insular activity. These results might inform theoretical models of food craving regulation and prompt novel therapeutic interventions for obesity and eating disorders.
