Observing And Characterizing Infragravity Waves Through Different Sampling Devices: A Case-Study Off The Belgian Coast

Infragravity waves are surface waves with relatively longer periods in comparison to periods of the spectrum-dominant gravity waves. They are characterized by oscillations between 20 and 300 seconds (0.0033 Hz < f < 0.05 Hz), amplitudes that range from a few millimeters to tens of centimeters, and wavelengths of kilometers (Munk, 1950; Holman and Bowen, 1982; Ardhuin et al., 2014). Their forcing is linked to, amongst others, nonlinear interaction between sea swell waves, varying wave heights causing the breaking point of the waves to vary with height, and height variation of incoming waves (Bertin et al., 2018). Infragravity waves play an important role in coastal dynamics (Svendsen, 2005) and have been reported to trigger nearshore hazards such as beach and dune erosion (de Vries et al. 2008; Roelvink et al., 2009), development of seiches in harbors (Melito et al., 2006; Cuomo and Guza, 2017), wave-driven coastal inundation (Gent, 2001; Stockdon et al., 2006), and ice shelves collapsing (Bromirski et al., 2010). Therefore, revealing infragravity wave characteristics is of utmost importance to understand their potential to generate hazards in a certain region, especially at sites strongly influenced by human occupation and activities. Their consideration in coastal safety planning can avoid damages, as several locations have already experienced in the past (Yamanaka et al., 2019). Implementing optimal sampling strategies for observing and characterizing infragravity waves might be challenging. By nature, these waves are hard to measure accurately due to their low amplitude. Their evolving characteristics in an environment marked by pronounced bathymetric features, such as the sand bank systems off the Belgian coast, add a degree of complexity that requires testing of different approaches, and at different sites. Within this context, this work first revisits observational approaches, instrumentation, logistics, and sampling techniques that have been used to study this phenomenon on the Belgian Coast. The advantages, challenges and limitations of different approaches are discussed, and best practices for collecting high-quality data in the field are addressed. To do so, this study explores multi-sensor in situ deployments conducted at four selected sites off the Belgian coast (Figure 1) (Nieuwpoort, Raversijde (inshore and offshore Stroombank), and Trapegeer) within the context of the “Influence of infragravity sea waves during storms on the hydro- and morphodynamic processes along hybrid soft-hard coastal defence structures with a shallow foreshore” project, an FWO-funded initiative being conducted in collaboration between UGent, VLIZ, and KULeuven and with support of Agency for Coastal and Maritime Services (AMDK). More specifically, field observations were conducted using multipurpose mooring frames equipped both with (i) Acoustic Doppler Current Profiles (ADCPs) to sample pressure (0.1% FS), current, and sea surface elevation through acoustic surface tracking and (ii) high-accuracy quartz pressure sensors (accuracy 0.01 % FS). Both ADCPs and pressure sensors were set to measure continuously at 4 Hz being, therefore, able to capture both infra- and gravity waves. Furthermore, the moorings were collocated with standard wave buoys from AMDK. Data was collected continuously for about 3 months, covering storm and calm wave conditions. Finally, the measurements from ADCPs (pressure and acoustic) and pressure sensors were compared and used to derive the infragravity wave characteristics, as well as cross-validated against wave buoy data.

Development of an acoustic doppler flow profiler and flow testing

The flow test with acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) is a new flow test method developed and applied only in the last decade or so. However, because it involves many disciplines such as hydroacoustic physics, ultrasonic transducer technology, electronics, and signal processing, most of the ADCPs used at the present stage are imported, and the domestically produced high-precision ADCPs have a lot of space in the domestic market. This paper introduces the measurement principle of ADCP. Based on this principle, we have overcome the weak signal processing circuit and successfully developed a domestic horizontal fixed acoustic Doppler flow profiler. The instrument is used for flow tests in Yixing (South) Hydrological Station, and the results of the comparison and error analysis meet the requirements of the national first-class precision hydrological station in the “Hydrological Data Compilation Specification” to satisfy the needs of the daily test in the station. The “Horizontal Fixed Acoustic Doppler Profile Flow Rate System” was selected as one of the 100 typical cases of popularizing and applying the achievements of the Ministry of Water Resources in 2020, and it can replace the imported instruments.

Reconstruction of the currents structure in the Kuibyshev Reservoir using satellite data and field measurements

This paper is devoted to a series of the first field subsatellite experiments conducted in the waters of the Kuibyshev Reservoir (Kama estuary) in 2023. Simultaneously with ship-based measurements of current and wind fields, as well as chlorophyll-a concentration, two high-spatial-resolution satellite scanners surveyed the study area of the reservoir. From sequential images, current fields were reconstructed using the standard maximum cross-correlation (MCC) method, which were then compared with measurements from the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). In certain parts of the water area, satisfactory agreement was obtained between the reconstructed currents and direct measurement current data. And in those parts of the water area where a significant discrepancy between the ADCP and MCC data was recorded, the possible reasons for the discrepancies were analyzed. Preliminary estimates of the parameters that have a significant impact on the possibility of reconstructing currents using the MCC method in inland eutrophicated water bodies have been made, and some limitations of the MCC method as a whole have been identified. Possible ways of further development of the method are analyzed.

Experimental construction of eddy real-time structure based on gradient-dependent OI in the Kuroshio-Oyashio confluence region

The internal structures of mesoscale eddies are variable due to different generation mechanism, spatiotemporal scale, and movement characteristics. Based on the principle of data assimilation, this study provided a new approach for constructing the eddy real-time internal structure using the gradient-dependent optimal interpolation (OI) method. Three eddy cases with different types and locations were selected to validate the construction results. The reliability of construction was evaluated by satellite observation, in-situ comparisons, and contrast with the numerical output. The results showed that the real-time geostrophic current characters were basically consistent with the surface and deep current (observed by satellite and acoustic doppler current profiler, ADCP). The density features exhibited by constructed results (eddy centers, mean radii, and variation tendency) were similar to the expendable conductivity-temperature-depth (XCTD) survey data and numerical output. Compared to the composite structure, the real-time structures represented more small or mesoscale fluctuations. During eddy cases evolution, the mean radii at the same depth first increased and then decreased. The horizontal scale, influence depth, and internal stability of an anticyclonic eddy with low-latitude were more powerful than the other two eddy cases owing to the domination of warm water in the Kuroshio extension region. The results indicated that the gradient-dependent OI was a hopeful technique for representing the real-time internal features during eddy evolution.

Meagre (Argyrosomus regius) move westward with favourable flows along the south coast of Portugal

Based on acoustic detections from a network of five stations along the south coast of Portugal, 25 transits of tagged meagre were identified between 2019 and 2020, mostly in summer. Comparisons with hourly current measurements from a moored Acoustic Doppler current Profiler and an High Frequency Radar system indicate that meagre move westward with favourable alongshore flows at a confidence level >90% (while eastward transits observations were too few to be significant). Several similar transits of different individuals occurred within two days suggesting a species response to environmental changes. The analysis of surface seawater temperature from ERA5 shows that meagre always swam westward towards colder water, despite their warm water affinities. As such, they reached food-rich upwelling areas when the water temperature was higher than usual (due to the westward advection of warm water), probably optimizing their feeding ability. The demonstrated alongshore meagre movements in response to temperature variations induced by the mesoscale coastal circulation is particularly relevant for the management of this high economic value species in southern Portugal.

Imbalance of sediment transport in a meso-tidal bay: effect of tidal pumping and residual circulation

In-situ mooring systems with acoustic Doppler current profilers were installed in the western (TM01) and eastern (TM02) parts of Yeosu Bay from September 3 to October 2, 2021, to understand the controlling mechanisms of suspended sediment transport. In the bay, freshwater from the Seomjin River freely exchanges with seawater from the open sea. Over the mooring period, current flows were mainly dominated by ebb tides. Power spectral density analysis of the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) exhibited a quarter-diurnal (6.21 h) frequency at TM01 and a semi-diurnal (12.42 h) frequency at TM02. The results suggested that SSC variations in the western part were driven primarily by local sediment resuspension, while they were influenced predominantly by horizontal advection in the eastern part. Differences in SSC variation at the two stations could be due to the physical properties of the bed sediments (TM01: sandy mud containing shell fragments, TM02: mud). Such current flows and SSC variations over the tidal cycles caused an imbalance of sediment transport. At TM01, the sediment fluxes were dominantly seaward due to tidal pumping (88% of the total) and the discharge of suspended sediments in the surface layer by residual circulation. At TM02, landward sediment fluxes were driven primarily by the residual current (73% of the total). Although the suspended sediment fluxes tended to be compensated and balanced mutually by circulation over the entire period, the suspended sediment fluxes at TM02 were approximately twice higher than those at TM01. This was caused by the difference in SSC asymmetry between flood and ebb at the two stations. The mechanisms controlling the transport of suspended sediment could vary spatially, and the relative contribution of tidal pumping and residual circulation could result in an imbalance of sediment transport.

Evaluating climate change impacts on reef environments via multibeam echosounder and Acoustic Doppler Current profiler technology

Crucial to the Earth's oceans, ocean currents dynamically react to various factors, including rotation, wind patterns, temperature fluctuations, alterations in salinity and the gravitational pull of the moon. Climate change impacts coastal ecosystems, emphasizing the need for understanding these currents. This study explores multibeam echosounder (MBES), specifically R2-Sonic 2020 instrument, offering detailed seabed information. Investigating coral reefs, rocky reefs and artificial reefs aimed to map seafloor currents movement and their climate change responses. MBES data viz. Bathymetry and backscatter were classified and acoustic doppler current profiler (ADCP) ground data were validated using random forest regression. Results indicated high precision in currents speed measurement i.e. coral reefs with 0.96, artificial reefs with 0.94 and rocky reefs with 0.97. Currents direction accuracy was notable in coral reefs with 0.85, slightly lower in rocky reefs with 0.72 and artificial reefs with 0.60. Random forest identified sediment and backscatter as key for speed prediction while direction relies on bathymetry, slope and aspect. The study emphasizes integrating sediment size, backscatter, bathymetry and ADCP data for seafloor current analysis. This multibeam data on sediments and currents support better marine spatial planning and determine biodiversity patterns planning in the reef area.

Intraseasonal variability of the deep scattering layer induced by mesoscale eddy

The deep scattering layer (DSL), a stratum of the marine diel vertical migration (DVM) organisms inhabiting the mesopelagic ocean, plays a crucial role in transporting carbon and nutrients from the surface to depth through the migration of its organisms. Using 18 months of in-situ observations and altimeter sea level data, we reveal for the first time the intraseasonal variations and underlying mechanisms of the DSL and the DVM to the east of the Taiwan Island. Substantial vertical speeds acquired from the Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler were used to examine the distribution and variation of the DVM. Innovatively, the results for the power spectrum analysis of the scattering intensity demonstrated a significant intraseasonal variability (ISV) with an 80-day period in the DSL. Furthermore, the variation in the DVM was closely linked to the DSL and showed an 80-day ISV during the observation. A dynamic relationship between the ISV of the DSL east of Taiwan Island and the westward-propagating mesoscale eddies was established. Anticyclonic (cyclonic) eddy movement toward Taiwan Island triggers downward (upward) bending of the local isotherms, resulting in a layer of DSL warming (cooling) and subsequent upper boundary layer deepening (rising). These findings underscore the substantial influence of mesoscale eddies on biological activity in the mesopelagic ocean, establishing a novel understanding of ISV dynamics in the DSL and their links to eddy-induced processes.

Tidal, density and wind-driven subtidal circulation in a hypersaline coastal lagoon

Subtidal circulation patterns were studied along an elongated hypersaline system. Month-long data were collected using three acoustic Doppler current profilers. These profilers were moored at depths of around 15 m in three locations: 10 km inland from the mouth of the lagoon, within the central region, and near the head of the lagoon. The variability of temporal and spatial subtidal circulation was explored using Empirical Orthogonal Functions analysis, which explained 93% of the variability through the first three modes. The first mode was influenced by tidal advection, resulting in a tidally-driven residual circulation for elongated channels, with inflows occurring over the shoals and outflows in the deeper channel sections. During the neap-tide cycle, inverse density gradients became relevant, coinciding with the peaks of mode 2 amplitude that accounted for 15% of the total variability. The gravitational circulation exhibited its highest intensity near the head, characterized by a vertically sheared flow with inflow occurring near the surface and outflow underneath. Predominant onshore wind stresses had a significant impact on the subtidal circulation and displayed a strong correlation with the mode 3 amplitude, explaining 11% of the total variability. Wind-driven circulation exhibited a vertically sheared profile, characterized by downwind near-surface flow and upwind flow underneath in the lagoon mouth and head, and a homogeneous downwind profile in the central part of the lagoon. It is concluded that tidal stresses governed the subtidal circulation, followed by density gradients, and wind stresses modified spatial circulation patterns induced by tides and density gradients. This research provides new observational evidence on tidal residuals in long channels and contributes to the understanding of the interactions between the main subtidal circulation drivers in hypersaline lagoons.

Upwelling-Induced Inflow Pulses in a Tropical Bay during Mid-Summer Drought

Bahía Santa Elena is a tropical bay located in the northern Pacific region of Costa Rica. This region experiences a period of reduced precipitation from July to August, known as mid-summer drought, induced by the intensification of northeastern winds from the Caribbean Low-Level Jet. Intensification of upwelling-favorable winds can cool surface waters adjacent to the bay, leading to a reduction in water temperatures within the bay, that alters the biological dynamics of coastal habitats. This study aims to analyze upwelling-induced inflow pulses in Bahía Santa Elena during mid-summer drought, focusing on the cooling effect of intensified upwelling-favorable winds and the subsequent warm water inflows following wind relaxation. We conducted two measuring campaigns from June to July in 2021 and in 2022. The first campaign consisted of a single acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) moored inside the bay. The second campaign consisted of two mooring deployments: an ADCP with a thermistor chain inside the bay and an ADCP installed at the inlet. Each campaign presented five distinct events of upwelled water inflows into the bay promoted by an offshore Ekman transport. Upwelling-favorable wind peaks were followed by a decrease in temperature of the water column. When the upwelling-favorable wind relaxed, a warm water pulse entered the bay. These events are expected to play an important role in biological processes within tropical bays adjacent to upwelling zones during mid-summer drought.

Mooring observations of tidal currents in the Jailolo Strait of the Indonesian seas

The vertical structure of internal tidal currents in the Jailolo Strait of the Indonesian seas is studied using the year-long mooring observations with two Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler instruments looking upward and downward, respectively, coving the full depth of the strait. The barotropic tides are extracted from the full-depth current profile measurements, showing the dominant M2, K1, and O1 tidal currents with amplitudes of 13.5 cm s−1, 11.0 cm s−1 and 7.6 cm s−1, in nearly reciprocating movement in the direction of 34.5°, 63.1°, and 75.2° clockwise from due north. The internal tidal currents in the Jailolo Strait contributing to about 50% of the total kinetic energy are found to be dominated by the low baroclinic modes, with M2 tide as the most dominant tidal constituent. High-frequency internal tides of D3 and D4 are observed, with baroclinic structure similar to that of M2 tides, and are suggested to be stimulated by nonlinear processes. The complicated vertical structure of tidal currents in the Jailolo Strait is disclosed for the first time in history. Its potential impact on vertical turbulent mixing suggests its importance in global ocean circulation and climate.

Application of coastal acoustic tomography: calibration of open boundary conditions on a numerical ocean model for tidal currents

Coastal acoustic tomography (CAT), which measures path-averaged currents from reciprocal acoustic transmission experiments and reconstructs velocity fields from the multiple path-averaged current data, is useful for monitoring tidal currents in coastal shallow water, especially if data assimilation is employed. Previous CAT data assimilation studies have focused on state estimation problems, i.e., the reconstruction of tidal currents and following dynamical discussion. In this study, we investigate the use of path-averaged currents in a boundary control problem. Specifically, we aim to use the observed path-averaged currents to determine the parameters of a numerical ocean model, which were tidal amplitudes and phases as the open boundary conditions in this study. We investigate two methods: using the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) results and a linearization approach called model Green’s function method. Both calibration methods decreased the amplitudes of tidal constituents at the open boundaries. We compare the model performance between the model predictions with and without the calibration of the open boundary conditions. The model predictions with the calibrated open boundary conditions improved the agreement with the observed path-averaged current. We also implemented the sequential updates of EnKF with the two calibrated open boundary conditions. The EnKF results with the independently calibrated two open boundary conditions improved the agreement with the comparison data obtained by acoustic Doppler current profiler measurement compared with the original EnKF result with the initial open boundary conditions.

Analysis of Currents in Open Water Southwest of Lae Lae Island

Ocean currents are one of the movements of horizontal or vertical mass movement of seawater that takes place continuously. The purpose of this study is to determine current conditions in open water close to narrow strait waters, as well as canal estuaries. Current data is the result of measurements that have been carried out using ADCP (Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) mini type ADP-SONTEK equipment on May 16, 2018, while tidal data refers to the recording results of the Makassar BIG tidal station. The results showed that the total surface current speed ranged from 0.017 – 0.375 m/sec with a dominant direction to the west or to open water both at high tide and at low tide. While the result of separation, the speed of tidal currents ranges from 0.032 – 0.343 m / sec.

The Brazil current cyclonic meandering and shelf-slope water exchanges at 27°S–31°S

The Brazil Current (BC) experiences intense mesoscale activity from its origin on the northeastern Brazilian coast till it reaches the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence. The BC meandering behavior near the Cape Santa Marta (27°S – 31°S), has not been well described in the literature. In this study, in situ observations and satellite images are used to describe the BC meanders and cyclonic eddies near the cape. The results obtained from two Lowered Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (LADCP) sections show that these structures are surface intensified but extend through the whole water column. Conductivity Temperature and Depth (CTD) profiles show evidence of coastal water trapping inside an eddy. Altimeter data show two hot spots of cyclones, one at 28.5°S and the other at 30.5°S, with an average of ∼5 and 7 eddies per year, respectively. The eddies generated on both sites have a mean lifetime of 37 days, and no significant differences were found between their surface properties. Satellite images of chlorophyll show that coastal water horizontal advection is a recurrent phenomenon in these eddies, imprinting an eddy stirring signal into their average composites. Furthermore, using Empirical Orthogonal Functions to analyze the BC flow in a mooring line, we observed that the mesoscales meanders are responsible for explaining at least 1/3 of the flow variability in this area.

Spatially quantifying and mapping the riverbed roughness of a tropical river via acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements to develop a 2-D numerical model

Field measurement of the bed roughness of tropical tidal rivers is a long and expensive process. In this study, we quantified the roughness coefficient from the acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) measurements considering flow characteristics along a 240 km length of the Vu Gia Thu Bon River system, in central Vietnam. Our approach entailed the application of the logarithmic velocity distribution trend of turbulent flows to determine the bottom roughness height. Then, we applied the equation suggested by Strickler (1923) to calculate the Manning roughness coefficient. The TELEMAC-2D hydraulic model was then used to simulate the effect of the roughness coefficient on the estimated water level. Despite its uncertainty, the estimated bed roughness was sufficient for the accurate calculation of the hydraulic variables. Compared to those in previous research, the statistical indicators showed good performance in the first simulation process during both the calibration and validation periods along the river system.

Grid Turbulence Measurements with an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler

The motivation for this study is to investigate the abilities and limitations of a Nortek Signature1000 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) regarding fine-scale turbulence measurements. Current profilers offer the advantage of gaining more coherent measurement data than available with point acoustic measurements, and it is desirable to exploit this property in laboratory and field applications. The ADCP was tested in a towing tank, where turbulence was generated from a grid towed under controlled conditions. Grid-induced turbulence is a well-studied phenomenon and a good approximation for isotropic turbulence. Several previous experiments are available for comparison and there are developed theories within the topic. In the present experiments, a Nortek Vectrino acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV), which is an established instrument for turbulence measurements, was applied to validate the ADCP. It was found that the mean flow measured with the ADCP was accurate within 4% of the ADV. The turbulent variance was reasonably well resolved by the ADCP when large grid bars were towed at a high speed, but largely overestimated for lower towing speed and smaller grid bars. The effective cutoff frequency and turbulent eddy size were characterized experimentally, which provides detailed guidelines for when the ADCP data can be trusted and will allow future experimentalists to decide a priori if the Nortek Signature can be used in their setup. We conclude that the ADCP is not suitable for resolving turbulent spectra in a small-scale grid-induced flow due to the intrinsic Doppler noise and the low spatial and temporal sample resolution relative to the turbulent scales.

Hydro‐Sedimentary Processes of a Plunging Hyperpycnal River Plume Revealed by Synchronized Remote Imagery and Gridded Current Measurements

AbstractThe present knowledge of plunging hyperpycnal river plumes is mainly based on two‐dimensional (confined) laboratory experiments. Several hypotheses on three‐dimensional (unconfined) flow processes have been made, but not tested in situ. In this field study, the dominant three‐dimensional hydro‐sedimentary processes related to unconfined plunging were elucidated by synchronizing autonomous time‐lapse camera images with boat‐towed acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements. It was found that the flow field complies with two‐dimensional conceptualizations along the plume centerline. Perpendicular to the centerline, the plume slumped laterally due to its density excess and simultaneously converged laterally due to its vertical divergence. This combination led to a narrowing of the plume near the surface, resulting in a sediment‐rich triangle‐shaped pattern on the surface near the inflow, and a rather stable width near the bed. The formation of secondary flow cells transporting riverine water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) away from the plume near the bed, up toward the surface and back toward the plume near the surface, was revealed. An increase of the average SPM concentration and the SPM flux in the main flow direction indicates net sediment erosion under the investigated conditions of high discharge and sediment load. This suggests transient storage of sediment during conditions of lower discharge and sediment load, and high morphological activity in the plunging area. These findings allowed extending a classical conceptual plunging model to laterally unconfined sediment‐laden plunging inflows for conditions of well‐mixed ambient water in the plunging region and inflow densimetric Froude numbers exceeding 1, common in nature.

Assessing the impact of an offshore longline mussel farm on local water circulation in a highly hydrodynamic energetic bay

Thought to be a sustainable choice, molluscs are the most consumed aquaculture foods after finfish. The expansion of the mussel aquaculture industry offshore reports lower environmental impacts compared to inshore farms. Although an offshore location has the potential to reduce a farm's ecological impacts, the effect of large developments on water currents is still not fully understood. High hydrodynamic regimes can influence the dispersion of farm biodeposits, organic loading, flow alterations with the potential to impact water residence time, particle and sediment dispersal (including larvae and biodeposits) and seabed sediment resuspension, which in turn, can have ecological impacts. Farm-induced flow changes of the UK's first large scale suspended longline mussel farm were assessed by a combination of oceanographic mooring and vessel-mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements. Data was separated by upstream and downstream according to the direction of the flow in relation to the farm. M-ADCP results showed a 28% decrease current velocities within the farm's boundaries, demonstrating within-farm current attenuation produced by mussel ropes drag. Flow was then redistributed above and beneath the farm showing velocity increases of 66% and 7% respectively, resulting in above-farm flow acceleration and downwelling (with up to 171% increase in near-seabed velocities compared to sea surface velocities). However, overall mean downstream sea surface velocities decreased by 63%. An overall 21% increase in near-seabed velocities showed the farm's effect on near-bed currents, the opposite to what is naturally achieved by seabed friction. This was further measured by VM-ADCP results also showing secondary flow acceleration at the farm's flanks and increased near-headline flow perturbations of up to 80% mean u velocities over a small horizontal scale (0.5 km), further demonstrating the effects of the farm on the local circulation. Through-farm surface current velocities (waves) were reduced by up to 72%. Flow changes were localised and dependent on the different tidal phases, the farm's design and, the abundance of mussel ropes providing drag.
