Transforming Cigarette Wastes into Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalyst: Does Each Component Behave Differently? An Experimental Evaluation

AbstractTrillion of cigarette butts are annually littered without being recycled. This work aims at valorizing the whole cigarette butts and their components (paper, filter and tobacco) into Fe‐Nx‐C electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acid and alkaline media. The pristine wastes were pyrolyzed at 450 °C, activated with KOH at 700 °C, blended with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) precursor, and heat‐treated at 600 °C to produce a robust Fe‐Nx‐C material with ORR active units. The effect of the cigarette components on the final electrocatalytic activity was evaluated by thoroughly investigating the surface chemistry with XPS. The electrocatalysts displayed similar results among the different components in both media due to comparable surface chemistry, especially concerning the nitrogen functional groups. The highest performance was obtained in alkaline where the electrocatalysts from whole cigarettes and paper (CIGF_450 and CIGPF_450) showed an E1/2 of 0.89 V vs RHE, slightly larger than that of Pt/C with 40 wt % of Pt, which encouraged to replace Pt‐based electrocatalysts in alkaline fuel cells.

Chitosan-derived carbon sphere with self-activating behavior for stable oxygen reduction reaction in acid and alkaline media

Utilizing shrimp waste-derived Chitosan as biomass source, we developed metal-free nitrogen and sulfur-doped porous carbon (NSPC) with a high specific surface area of 609.53 m2/g as a remarkable electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), surpassing benchmark Pt/C with half-wave (0.8574 V) and onset (0.9573 V) potentials in alkaline (0.1 M KOH) media. Besides high electrocatalytic activity, NSPC-800 showed excellent methanol tolerance ability and significantly low hydrogen peroxide yields (H2O2) of 5 % and 8 % in 0.1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, which is comparably lower than the previously reported chitosan based non-precious catalysts. Interestingly NSPC-800 displays robust stability in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte, improving the current retention rate from 89.17 % to 95.18 % over an increased operation period, evidencing its self-activating characteristics. This self-activating stability is also mirrored in 0.5 M H2SO4 where both fresh and recycled (after 5000 CV cyles) NSPC-800 catalysts retained more than half of their initial current. Additionally, to identify the nature of the active sites, the ORR measurements were correlated with ex-situ spectroscopy for post-stability of fresh and recycled NSPC-800 catalysts revealed dynamic reconfiguration of nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen active sites evidenced compared to the pre-stability elemental surface, indicating an adaptive response of the catalyst to the harsh operating environment. In the future, our biomass-derived NSPC-800 will pave the way to develop cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts from waste to energy devices promising a twin-goal approach, contributing to the circular economy and sustainable development goals.

Second-Shell N Dopants Regulate Acidic O2 Reduction Pathways on Isolated Pt Sites.

Pt is a well-known benchmark catalyst in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) that drives electrochemical O2-to-H2O conversion with maximum chemical energy-to-electricity efficiency. Once dispersing bulk Pt into isolated single atoms, however, the preferential ORR pathway remains a long-standing controversy due to their complex local coordination environment and diverse site density over substrates. Herein, using a set of carbon nanotube supported Pt-N-C single-atom catalysts, we demonstrate how the neighboring N dopants regulate the electronic structure of the Pt central atom and thus steer the ORR selectivity; that is, the O2-to-H2O2 conversion selectivity can be tailored from 10% to 85% at 0.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. Moreover, via a comprehensive X-ray-radiated spectroscopy and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy analysis coupled with theoretical modeling, we reveal that a dominant pyridinic- and pyrrolic-N coordination within the first shell of Pt-N-C motifs favors the 4e- ORR, whereas the introduction of a second-shell graphitic-N dopant weakens *OOH binding on neighboring Pt sites and gives rise to a dominant 2e- ORR. These findings underscore the importance of the chemical environment effect for steering the electrochemical performance of single-atom catalysts.

Island-in-Sea Structured Pt3Fe Nanoparticles-in-Fe Single Atoms Loaded in Carbon Materials as Superior Electrocatalysts toward Alkaline HER and Acidic ORR.

In this work, Pt3Fe nanoparticles (Pt3Fe NPs) with the ordered internal structure and Pt-rich shells surrounded by plenty of Fe single atoms (Fe SAs) as active species (Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA) loaded in the carbon materials are successfully fabricated, which are abbreviated as island-in-sea structured (IISS) Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA catalysts. Moreover, the synergistic effect of O-bridging between Pt3Fe NPs and Fe SAs, and the ordered internal structured Pt3Fe NPs with Pt-rich shells of an optimal thickness contributes to the achievement of the local acidic environments on the surfaces of Pt3Fe NPs in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the enhancement of the desorption rate of *OH intermediate in the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In addition, the electronic interactions between Pt3Fe NPs and dispersed Fe SAs cannot only provide efficient electrons transfer, but also prevent the aggregation and dissolution of Pt3Fe NPs. Furthermore, the overpotential and the half wave potential of the as-prepared IISS Pt3Fe NP-in-Fe SA catalysts toward the alkaline HER and toward the acidic ORR are 8mV at a current density of 10mAcm-2 and 0.933V, respectively, which is 29 lower and 86mV higher than those (37mV and 0.847V) of commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Cation Effects on the Acidic Oxygen Reduction Reaction at Carbon Surfaces.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a widely used green oxidant. Until now, research has focused on the development of efficient catalysts for the two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR). However, electrolyte effects on the 2e- ORR have remained little understood. We report a significant effect of alkali metal cations (AMCs) on carbons in acidic environments. The presence of AMCs at a glassy carbon electrode shifts the half wave potential from -0.48 to -0.22 VRHE. This cation-induced enhancement effect exhibits a uniquely sensitive on/off switching behavior depending on the voltammetric protocol. Voltammetric and in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopic evidence is presented, supporting a controlling role of the potential of zero charge of the catalytic enhancement. Density functional theory calculations associate the enhancement with stabilization of the *OOH key intermediate as a result of locally induced field effects from the AMCs. Finally, we developed a refined reaction mechanism for the H2O2 production in the presence of AMCs.

Stable and High-performance Flow H2 -O2 Fuel Cells with Coupled Acidic Oxygen Reduction and Alkaline Hydrogen Oxidation Reactions.

Conventional H2 -O2 fuel cells suffer from the low output voltage, insufficient durability, and high-cost catalysts (e.g., noble metals). Herein, this work reports a conceptually new coupled flow fuel cell (CF-FC) by coupling asymmetric electrolytes for acidic oxygen reduction reaction and alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction. By introducing an electrochemical neutralization energy, the newly-developed CF-FCs possess a significantly increased theoretical open-circuit voltage. Specifically, a CF-FC based on a typical transition metal single-atom Fe-N-C cathode catalyst demonstrates a high electricity output up to 1.81V and durability with an ultrahigh retention of 91% over 110h, far superior to the conventional fuel cells (usually, < 1.0V, < 50% retention over 20h). The output performance can even be significantly enhanced easily by connecting multiple CF-FCs into the parallel, series, or combined parallel-series connections at a fractional cost of that for the conventional H2 -O2 fuel cells, showing great potential for large-scale practical applications. Thus, this study provides a platform to transform conventional fuel cell technology through the rational design and development of advanced energy conversion and storage devices by coupling different electrocatalytic reactions.

Disentangling the Activity‐Stability Trade‐Off of Pyrrolic N‐Coordinated Fe─N4 Catalytic Sites for Long‐Life Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Acidic Medium

AbstractFe─N─C materials with Fe─N4 sites are considered as most promising non‐precious metal‐based electrocatalysts for low‐cost proton‐exchange‐membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Breaking the trade‐off between activity and stability has been a long‐standing challenge in the field of acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein, a “top‐down” thermally‐driven strategy is developed to achieve highly active pyrrolic N‐coordinated Fe sites in a high spin state with Fe atomic cluster (Fen@Fe─Npyrr─C) and discover that the neighboring Fen cluster can synergistically stabilize such vulnerable Fe─N4 sites by inhibiting their protonation. Consequently, the Fen@Fe─Npyrr─C catalysts exhibit much enhanced ORR activity and stability, endowing PEMFCs with a high power density of 804.6 mW cm−2 (testing conditions: 80 °C, 100% RH, 2.0 bar) and over 100 h durability (at 0.5 V). These findings open up opportunities for the exploration of durable Fe─N─C ORR electrocatalysts for non‐precious metal‐based PEMFCs and other applications.

Investigating Oxygen Reduction Performance of Fe-N-C Catalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Non-precious Fe-N-C catalysts have reached high activity levels for acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) setup approaching to that of the platinum group metals (PGM) when compared at high catalyst loadings of 0.6-1.0 mgFe-N-C cm-2. The improvements in the ORR activity of Fe-N-Cs can be attributed to new synthetic routes developed in recent years that have led to increased Fe-N4 active site density and utilization and/or better intrinsic activity/turnover frequency (TOF) of those sites.1-3 Despite impressive activities in half-cells, Fe-N-Cs still require quite high loadings in the range of 4.0-5.0 mg cm-2 in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which makes the Fe-N-C cathodes 4-5x thicker than Pt-based cathodes (~100 µm for Fe-N-C layer vs ~10-20 µm for Pt layer). Thick Fe-N-C cathodes suffer from quick performance drop in medium to high current density region due to mass-transport related losses. Reducing the Fe-N-C loading levels in RRDE and in PEMFC without comprising the ORR activity would need further improvements in active site density, site utilization and TOF. In this talk, I will present our work on how morphological tailoring of carbon framework in Fe-N-Cs affects the utilization of active sites and water adsorption-desorption behaviour with the aim of improving the ORR performance and mass-transport properties. Active-site imprinted carbon frameworks are used to prepare Fe-N-Cs that consist of purely Fe-N4 sites without any other iron species.1,4,5 Besides activity, performance stability against extensive voltage cycling in RRDE and long-term durability in PEMFC single-cells is another important criterion that Fe-N-Cs need to fulfil for becoming a viable substitute to PGM catalysts. Very recently, encouraging results on the improvement of Fe-N-C durability in PEMFC tests have been reported using radical scavengers and by coating a thin carbon layer on the surface of Fe-N-C.6,7 However, significantly more efforts are required in that direction for reaching the durability targets of thousands of hours. Second part of the talk will discuss the performance stability of Fe-N-Cs.

Bimetallic niobium-iron oxynitride as a highly active catalyst towards the oxygen reduction reaction in acidic media

Developing cost-effective acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with high performance is of great significance for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) but very challenging. Transition-metal oxynitrides have high tolerance to harsh acidic media due to their excellent corrosion resistance, but they suffer from low acidic ORR activity. Here we report the discovery of a carbon-supported bimetallic niobium-iron oxynitride as a highly active and robust ORR catalyst in acidic media. This catalyst shows much higher ORR activity than its monometallic niobium oxynitride counterpart and exhibits a record high ORR activity among transition-metal oxynitrides, with an optimal ORR half-wave potential of 0.75 V vs. RHE, approaching those of atomically dispersed metal-N-C materials. It is revealed that the optimal catalyst has two types of Fe species with low oxidation state and two additional oxygen adsorption sites with high reactivity in comparison to its monometallic niobium oxynitride counterpart, therefore resulting in its remarkable ORR activity. Our work provides a new direction to explore efficient acidic ORR catalysts with low costs.

CoIn dual-atom catalyst for hydrogen peroxide production via oxygen reduction reaction in acid

The two-electron oxygen reduction reaction in acid is highly attractive to produce H2O2, a commodity chemical vital in various industry and household scenarios, which is still hindered by the sluggish reaction kinetics. Herein, both density function theory calculation and in-situ characterization demonstrate that in dual-atom CoIn catalyst, O-affinitive In atom triggers the favorable and stable adsorption of hydroxyl, which effectively optimizes the adsorption of OOH on neighboring Co. As a result, the oxygen reduction on Co atoms shifts to two-electron pathway for efficient H2O2 production in acid. The H2O2 partial current density reaches 1.92 mA cm−2 at 0.65 V in the rotating ring-disk electrode test, while the H2O2 production rate is as high as 9.68 mol g−1 h−1 in the three-phase flow cell. Additionally, the CoIn-N-C presents excellent stability during the long-term operation, verifying the practicability of the CoIn-N-C catalyst. This work provides inspiring insights into the rational design of active catalysts for H2O2 production and other catalytic systems.

Coupling Single-Atom Sites and Ordered Intermetallic PtM Nanoparticles for Efficient Catalysis in Fuel Cells.

The design of an efficient catalytic system with low Pt loading and excellent stability for the acidic oxygen reduction reaction is still a challenge for the extensive application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, a gas-phase ordered alloying strategy is proposed to construct an effective synergistic catalytic system that blends PtM intermetallic compounds (PtM IMC, M = Fe, Cu, and Ni) and dense isolated transition metal sites (M-N4 ) on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC). This strategy enables Pt nanoparticles and defects on the NC support to timely trap flowing metal salt without partial aggregation, which is attributed to the good diffusivity of gaseous transition metal salts with low boiling points. In particular, the resulting Pt1 Fe1 IMC cooperating with Fe-N4 sites achieves cooperative oxygen reduction with a half-wave potential up to 0.94V and leads to a high mass activity of 0.51A mgPt -1 and only 23.5% decay after 30k cycles, both of which exceed DOE 2025 targets. This strategy provides a method for reducing Pt loading in fuel cells by integrating Pt-based intermetallics and single transition metal sites to produce an efficient synergistic catalytic system.

Directly transforming graphite into iron single atom catalyst for the acidic oxygen reduction reaction

Platinum group metal (PGM)-free single atom catalysts (SACs) are highly desired to accelerate the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic media, which has a critical role in renewable energy technologies. Herein, we report the direct transformation of commercial graphite into iron (Fe) single atom anchored graphitic flake via a combination of mechanochemical and thermochemical synthesis. By ball milling graphite with zirconium dioxide balls and capsule in the presence of dry ice, the graphite was mechanochemically functionalized and exfoliated into carboxylated graphitic flake (CGF). Subsequent heat-treatment of CGF with nitrogen containing additives formed nitrogenated graphitic flake (NGF) incorporated with Fe single atoms (Fe1NGF). Importantly, the existing Fe impurity in the pristine graphite was converted into value-added product without adding Fe sources. With an ultralow Fe content (0.4 wt%), the as-prepared Fe1NGF exhibited an acidic ORR performance comparable to Pt/C, including ultrahigh mass activity, surpassing the other reported outstanding Fe-based SACs.

Surface activation of platinum group metal clusters for efficient and durable oxygen reduction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

To develop efficient and durable acidic oxygen–reduction–reaction (ORR) catalysts based on all platinum group metals (PGMs) is crucial for large-scale application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) but challenging. Here, we report a nitrogen coordination-induced strong metal–support interaction that can tune the surface atoms of ORR-inactive PGM clusters into efficient and durable active sites. Taking Rh as an example, the carbonization of Rh-overdoped zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 results in a large number of Rh clusters (with a little atomic Rh) in porous nitrogen-doped carbon. The cluster surface atoms coordinate with the nitrogen of the carbon support, forming much stronger metal–support interactions than that of common N-doped carbon-supported metal nanoparticles. The activity of surface-activated Rh clusters is close to that of Pt/C. The regulation rules for the surface active sites inherit most of the characteristics of the corresponding single-atom catalysts, but without their severe instability problem. This surface activation strategy has also shown applicable to other PGMs, thereby it is a promising way to alleviate the reliance of PEMFCs on platinum.

Ordering-Dependent Hydrogen Evolution and Oxygen Reduction Electrocatalysis of High-Entropy Intermetallic Pt4 FeCoCuNi.

Disordered solid-solution high-entropy alloys have attracted wide research attention as robust electrocatalysts. In comparison, ordered high-entropy intermetallics have been hardly explored and the effects of the degree of chemical ordering on catalytic activity remain unknown. In this study, a series of multicomponent intermetallic Pt4 FeCoCuNi nanoparticles with tunable ordering degrees is fabricated. The transformation mechanism of the multicomponent nanoparticles from disordered structure into ordered structure is revealed at the single-particle level, and it agrees with macroscopic analysis by selected-area electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction. The electrocatalytic performance of Pt4 FeCoCuNi nanoparticles correlates well with their crystal structure and electronic structure. It is found that increasing the degree of ordering promotes electrocatalytic performance. The highly ordered Pt4 FeCoCuNi achieves the highest mass activities toward both acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) which are 18.9-fold and 5.6-fold higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. The experiment also shows that this catalyst demonstrates better long-term stability than both partially ordered and disordered Pt4 FeCoCuNi as well as Pt/C when subject to both HER and ORR. This ordering-dependent structure-property relationship provides insight into the rational design of catalysts and stimulates the exploration of many other multicomponent intermetallic alloys.

A facile strategy to prepare FeNx decorated PtFe intermetallic with excellent acidic oxygen reduction reaction activity and stability

The construction of low-Pt-content intermetallic on carbon supports has been verified as a promising method to promote the activity of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this study, we have developed a simple and effective strategy to obtain a well-designed CNT-PtFe-PPy precursor. This precursor contains modulated Pt- and Fe-based content dispersed in polypyrrole (PPy) chain segments, which are in-situ generated on the templates of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Subsequent pyrolysis of the CNT-PtFe-PPy precursor produces a CNT-PtFe@FeNC catalyst, which contains both Fe-Nx and PtFe intermetallic active sites. Due to the highly efficient dispersion of active species, the CNT-PtFe@FeNC electrocatalyst displays a 9.5 times higher specific activity (SA) and 8.5 times higher mass activity (MA) than those of a commercial Pt/C catalyst in a 0.1 M HClO4 solution. Additionally, these results, combined with excellent durability (the SA and MA maintained 94 % and 91 % of initial activity after a 10-k cycle accelerated durability test), represent among the best performance achieved so far for Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the presence of Fe-N4 species reduces the adsorption energy between the PtFe intermetallic compound and OH*, accelerating the ORR process.

Boosting the Acidic Oxygen Reduction Activity of p‐Block Single‐Atomic Catalyst via p–p Orbital Coupling and Pore Engineering

Atomically dispersed main group element single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have recently attracted increasing attention in electrocatalysis. However, their performances in acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remain unsatisfactory owing to the suboptimal coordination environment, limited mass transfer, and active site exposure. Herein, a series of p‐block Sn SACs with hierarchical pore structures are prepared by a dual melting salt‐mediated soft template method. By deliberately regulating the pore structures, highly exposed Sn active sites with N/O coordination are obtained, which endow SnN3O‐50 with exceptional ORR performances, especially in acidic medium. The half‐wave potential of SnN3O‐50 is up to 0.816 V, with a loss of only 15 mV after 10 000 potential cycles. Furthermore, the peak power densities of the fuel cell and zinc–air battery assembled using SnN3O‐50 as cathodes reach 502 and 173.5 mW cm−2, respectively, demonstrating great potential for practical applications. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the N/O coordination of Sn induces localization of 5p electrons, which leads to strong coupling with the p orbit of O2. Meanwhile, the presence of defects synergistically regulates the adsorption of reaction intermediates, thereby optimizing the free energy of the four successive ORR steps.

Giving New Life to Waste Cigarette Butts: Transformation into Platinum Group Metal-Free Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction in Acid, Neutral and Alkaline Environment

Following the core theme of a circular economy, a novel strategy to upcycle cigarette butt waste into platinum group metal (PGM)-free metal nitrogen carbon (M-N-C) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is presented. The experimental route was composed of (i) the transformation of the powdered cigarette butts into carbonaceous char via pyrolysis at 450 °C, 600 °C, 750 °C and 900 °C, (ii) the porosity activation with KOH and (iii) the functionalization of the activated chars with iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc). The electrochemical outcomes obtained by the rotating disk electrode (RRDE) technique revealed that the sample pyrolyzed at 450 °C (i.e., cig_450) outperformed the other counterparts with its highest onset (Eon) and half-wave potentials (E1/2) and demonstrated nearly tetra-electronic ORR in acidic, neutral and alkaline electrolytes, all resulting from the optimal surface chemistry and textural properties.

This article provides a focused, but critical review on C‐MFECs for ORR in acidic media with an emphasis on advances in the structure design and synthesis, fundamental understanding of the structure‐property relationship and electrocatalytic mechanisms, and their applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Current challenges and future perspectives in this emerging field are also discussed.

Synthesis of Platinum Nanocrystals Dispersed on Nitrogen-Doped Hierarchically Porous Carbon with Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction Activity and Durability.

Platinum-based catalysts are widely used for efficient catalysis of the acidic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the agglomeration and leaching of metallic Pt nanoparticles limit the catalytic activity and durability of the catalysts and restrict their large-scale commercialization. Therefore, this study aimed to achieve a uniform distribution and strong anchoring of Pt nanoparticles on a carbon support and improve the ORR activity and durability of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. Herein, we report on the facile one-pot synthesis of a novel ORR catalyst using metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) bonding, which is formed in situ during the ion exchange and pyrolysis processes. An ion-exchange resin was used as the carbon source containing R-N+(CH3)3 groups, which coordinate with PtCl62- to form nanosized Pt clusters confined within the macroporous framework. After pyrolysis, strong M-N-C bonds were formed, thereby preventing the leaching and aggregation of Pt nanoparticles. The as-synthesized Pt supported on the N-doped hierarchically porous carbon catalyst (Pt/NHPC-800) showed high specific activity (0.3 mA cm-2) and mass activity (0.165 A mgPt-1), which are approximately 2.7 and 1.5 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. The electrochemical surface area of Pt/NHPC-800 remained unchanged (~1% loss) after an accelerated durability test of 10,000 cycles. The mass activity loss after ADT of Pt/NHPC-800 was 18%, which is considerably lower than that of commercial Pt/C (43%). Thus, a novel ORR catalyst with highly accessible and homogeneously dispersed Pt-N-C sites, high activity, and durability was successfully prepared via one-pot synthesis. This facile and scalable synthesis strategy for high-efficiency catalysts guides the further synthesis of commercially available ORR catalysts.
