REACTIONS OF PINOSYLVIN AND PINOSYLVIN DIMETHYL ETHER WITH CHLORINE DIOXIDE

Products from the reaction of pinosylvin 1a and pinosylvin dimethyl ether 1b with chlorine dioxide were characterized. Pinosylvin was more extensively degraded and gave benzoic acid, traces of other monomeric carboxylic acids, 2,6-dichloro- and 2,4,6-trichloropinosylvin 2, (n = 2 and 3), the benzilic acid rearrangement product 3 and the maleic acids 4a and 4b. Pinosylvin dimethyl ether gave similar monomeric products, the dichloroderivative 5, the dichloroepoxide 6 and a small amount of the dichlorohydroxyketone 7.

The Reaction of Syringol with Chlorine Dioxide

ABTRACT Syringol 2 (R=H) reacted with chlorine dioxide to give the dione 7 and its benzilic acid rearrangement product 8a as the major products. Other products were the dimethoxybenzoquinones 3a and 3b, 3-chlorosyringol 4b, chlorocyclopropenone 5, 2-furoic acid 6a and the dichioromethylenefuranones 10a and 10b. Two samples of effluent from chlorine dioxide bleaching contained the dione 7, while one sample contained the furanone 10a, and one contained the isomer 10b.

A nonenzymic model for the coenzyme B 12-dependent isomerization of methylmalonyl-SCoA to suiccinyl-SCoA

Dimethyl bromomethylmalonate (IV) reacts with vitamin B 12s in aqueous solution yielding a relatively unstable carbon-cobalt bonded adduct V, which shows visible spectra in good accord with expectation. The adduct V was allowed to decompose in water, in the dark, at room temperature and at physiological pH. Three products: succinic acid (VI), methylmalonic acid (VIII) and malonic acid (VII) were formed in 3, 18, and 13% yields respectively. Isolation of the succinic acid rearrangement product provides support for the intermediacy of the carbon-cobalt bond in the coenzyme B 12 dependent enzymic carbon-skeleton rearrangement of methylmalonyl-SCoA to succinyl-SCoA.

Metabolites from Microorganisms. 160th Communication. Conocandin, a new Fungistatic Antibiotic.From a strain of Hormococcus conorum (SACC. ET ROUM.) ROBACK A 32′287, conocandin, a novel type C18‐fatty acid with high and specific in vitro fungistatic activity was isolated by means of counter current distribution and silicagel chromatography. The antibiotic is a viscous oil with the molecular formula C18H30O3. It is characterized by IR. and NMR. spectra, ester derivatives and the products of acid rearrangement and ozonolytic degradation. The structure of (E)‐2‐methylidene‐10‐methyl‐trans‐3,4‐epoxy‐9‐hexadecenoic acid (1) is proposed.
