The Effect of Using Anticipation Guide Strategy on Students’ Reading Comprehension at Politeknik Bina Husada Kendari

This study was an experimental study conducted at the Poltiteknik Bina Husada Kendari registered in the academic year 2022/2023. The objective of this study was to find out whether the effect of the Anticipation Guide Strategy significantly affects students’ reading comprehension. The sample for this study was 2 classes (60 students) from 4 classes (110 students) in the Dental Health Study Program at the Poltiteknik Bina Husada Kendari. The instrument for collecting data was a reading comprehension narrative text in the form of a multiple-choice test, that consisted of 30 items. Pre-test and post-tests were conducted in both experimental and control classes. To analyze the data was used Independent Sample t-Test. After analyzing the data, the research got; (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by conventional method had Mean = 61.333 and Standard Deviation = 9.1852. (2) the student’s achievement in reading comprehension taught by the anticipation guide strategy had a Mean = 85.167 and a Standard Deviation of 6.3631. It can be concluded that there is a difference in the average student learning outcomes between the control group and the experimental group. (3) The result of the Independent Sample t-test showed that the significance value (Sig.) was 0.000 smaller than the probability of 0.05. That shows if H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there was a significant effect of using the anticipation guide strategy on students’ reading comprehension at Politeknik Bina Husada Kendari.

THINK PAIR SHARE (TPS) STRATEGIES AND DIRECTED READING THINKING ACTIVITY (DRTA) TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION ON READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT

The research deals with teaching strategies and students’ motivation on reading comprehension achievement. The objective of this study is to reveal that the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by Think Pair Share is significantly higher than that taught by Directed Reading Thinking Activity using question answer relationship teaching study. The research method used is quantitative research design. The populations of this research are the students of Midwifery Grade II at STIKes Mitra Husada Medan, Academic year 2021/2022. Two classes are randomly selected and the total samplings are 72 students. The instruments used are multiple choice test and questionnaire. The data analyzed are by Two-Way ANOVA with 2x2 factorial designs with F observed = 14.1 and F table = 4.00, and the results indicated the Fobserved Ftable, so null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It is concluded that the students taught by using TPS strategy is better than those taught by using Directed Reading Thinking Activity on reading comprehension achievement. Based on this research, researchers recommend using TPS learning model because this learning model can improve students' ability to solve reading comprehension problems. This model can also be used as an alternative to apply innovative English learning, especially in reading, creating an exciting learning atmosphere, and also providing opportunities for students to express their ideas in English in their own way.

THE COMPARISON BETWEEN DIRECT METHOD AND GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD IN IMPROVING STUDENTS' READING COMPREHENSION

The purpose of this research is to find out which method is more effective between the Direct Method and the Grammar Translation Method in improving the reading ability of the students at SMPS Berbudi Kopian. The approach used in this research is quantitative with a quasi-experimental design methodology. The samples are class VIII A students as the Grammar Translation Method class and class VIII B as the Direct Method class. Data were analyzed using the SPSS application. Based on the results of the analysis using SPSS in this study, it was shown that the two methods were slightly improved the students’ reading comprehension at SMPS Berbudi Kopian especially in grade VIII. The results of this study also show that the Grammar Translation Method improves students' reading ability more than using the Direct Method. The results showed that the average post-test in the Direct Method class was 68 and the post-test average in the Grammar Translation Method class was 75. In the table (2-tailed) the independent t-test was more than 0.05 (0.128 > 0.05) it can be concluded that there is no significant difference between student achievement in reading comprehension taught using the Direct Method and Grammar Translation Method. So, the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted.

Stad as A Strategy of Teaching Reading Comprehension in Junior High School

This research investigated whether there was a significant difference on students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught using STAD and lecture method. The sample was the eighth-graders of SMPN 3 Banjarmasin. A quasi-experimental design was employed in this research. The experimental group was taught using STAD while control group was taught using lecture method. A reading comprehension test as the instrument of collecting data was administered for both groups. Based on the research result using t-test, it was found that the t value was higher than t-table (2.39315 > 2.00) which means that there is a significant difference of achievement between the experimental group and control group. From these findings it can be interpreted that the use of STAD is more effective than lecture method in teaching reading comprehension for junior high school students. It is suggested for English teachers in Junior High School to use STAD in teaching reading since it is useful in improving students’ reading comprehension achievement.

The Effect of Teaching Strategies and Students Curiosity on Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension

The objective of this research was to investigate whether: (1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using INSERT strategy was higher than that taught by using K-W-L strategy, (2) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high curiosity was higher than that low curiosity, and (3) There was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This study was conducted at SMP Al-Ulum Medan during academic year 2017/2018. The population of this study was the eighth grade student which consists of six classes namely VIII-1, VIII-2, VIII-3, VIII-4, VIII-5, and VIII-6. So, the total of population was 228 students. Then two classes of grade VIII-4 and VIII-6 were chosen in this study as the sample. This study was an experimental research. The instrument used in this research was reading comprehension test and questionnaire sheet. The data were analysed by using two ways analysis of variance (Anova) 2x2 factorial design F-test at the level of significant 5% or ? = 0.05. The result of data analysis proved that: The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using INSERT strategy was higher than that taught by using K-W-L strategy, (2) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high curiosity was higher than that low curiosity, and (3) There was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension by observing the data analysis, and the scores means of the students.

THE EFFECT OF TEACHING STRATEGIES AND LEARNING STYLE ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING COMPREHENSION

The objectives of this experimental research were to investigate whether: 1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using advance organizer strategy was higher than taught by using reciprocal strategy. 2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual style was higher than that students with verbal style, and 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade X of private senior high school named SMA Kartika I-1 Medan in 2012/2013 school year. The total number of population was five classes containing 200 students. There were two classes containing 83 students chosen as sample of this research by applying cluster random sampling technique. In further, there was cluster random assignment done in both two classes in order to know the position of the class whether as experimental group 1 or experimental group 2.The experimental group 1 was treated by using advance organizer strategy and the experimental group 2 was treated by using reciprocal strategy. Then,the research design was experimentby using factorial design 2x2 because there is two independent variables (teaching strategies) and two attributives (learning styles). The questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students’ learning style upon the visual and verbal. Next, students’ achievement in reading comprehension text was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two- way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significance ?= 0,05. The result reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using advance organizer was higher than that taught by using reciprocal strategy, with Fobs= 9,1>Ftab= 3,96, (2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual learning style was higher that that with verbal learning style, with Fobs=11,7 >Ftab= 3,96,(3) there is interaction between teaching strategies and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with Fobs= 47,4>Ftab= 3,96. Moreover, Tuckey-Test result also showed that visual style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using advance organizer strategy while verbal style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using reciprocal strategy.

THE EFFECT OF TEACHING STRATEGIES AND SEL-EFFICACY ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING COMPREHENSION

The objective of this experimental research were to find out whether: (1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Annotation strategy was higher than that taught by using Compensation strategy, (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-efficacy was higher than that low self-efficacy, and (3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and self-efficacy on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade IX of SMP Negeri 18 Medan of 2016/2017 academic year. There were 52 students as samples of this research by applying cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research were reading comprehension test and questionaire sheet. The data were analyzed using ANOVA at the level of significant α = 0.05. The result of the data analysis proved that: (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Annotation strategy was higher than that taught by using Compensation strategy, with Fobs (66.73) ˃ Ftab (4.10), (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-efficacy was higher than that with low self-efficacy, with Fobs (94.83) ˃ Ftab (4.10), (3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and self-efficacy, with Fobs (11.29) ˃ Ftab (4.10). THE EFFECT OF TEACHING STRATEGIES AND SELF REGULATION ON STUDENTS’READING COMPREHENSION

The objectives of this experimental research were to find out whether: (1)The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Read, Ask, Put, and Paraphrasing (RAPP) strategy was higher than that taught by using Direct, Reading Thinking, Active (DRTA) strategy, (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-regulation was higher than that low self-regulation, and (3) there was an interaction between teaching strategies and self-regulation on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade XII of Madrasah Aliyah Negeri Sipirok of 2016/2017 academic year. There were 63 students as samples of this research by applying cluster random sampling technique. The instruments of this research were reading comprehension test and questionnaire sheet. The data were analyzed using ANOVA at the level of significant α = 0.05. The result of the data analysis proved that: (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using RAPP strategy was higher than the students were taught by using DRTA strategy (2) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high self-regulation was higher than the students were given low self-regulation, (3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and self-regulation. THE EFFECT OF TEACHING STRATEGIES AND CURIOSITY ON STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT

The objectives of this research are to find out whether: 1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using the Directed Reading Thinking Aactivity (DRTA) strategy was higher than taught by using the Questions-Answer Relationship (QARs) strategy. 2) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high curiosity was higher than that The students with low curiosity, and 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on The students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade XI of MAN Kampung (MAN KP) Teungoh Langsa in 2016/2017 school year. The total number of population of this research was 160 students. There were 6 classes. Two classes were chosen consist of 30 students of each class so 60 students were selected as sample of this research by applying multistage cluster random sampling. The research design was experimental research by using factorial design 2x2. The XI IPA2 class was taught by using Directed Reading Thinking Activity and XI IAI was taught by using Questions-Answer Relationship (QARs) Strategy. Curiosity questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students upon the high and low curiosity. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significant. The results of the data analysis proved that: 1) The students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DRTA) strategy is higher than students achievement in reading comprehension taught by Questions-Answer Relationship(QARs) Teaching strategy. 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Keywords: Curiosity; Comprehension; Achievement; Teaching Strategies

THE EFFECT OF TEACHING TECHNIQUES AND INTEREST ON STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN READING COMPREHENSION

The objectives of this study were to find out whether students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by TELLS technique was significantly higher than PSOT. (2) whether the students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high interest was higher than with low interest, and (3) If there was interaction between teaching techniques and interest on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This study established the different effect of teaching techniques on students’ interest which was required by the hypothesis and applying experimental research design by using Factorial Design 2x2. Descriptive statistic was used to describe the data such as mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and variance. While inferential statistic used to test the research hypotheses by applying two ways ANOVA with the level of significance 0.05. The results reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading expository text taught by using TELLS was higer than PSOT technique, with Fob = 17.902 > Ftab = 3.11, (2) students’ achievement in reading expository text on hight interest was higher than that low interest, with Fobs = 38.988 > Ftab = 3.11, (3) there was interaction between teaching technique and interest on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with Fobs = 5.962 > Ftab = 3.11.Keywords:Teaching Techniques, Interest, Reading Comprehension

The Effect of Teaching Strategies and Curiosity on Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension

The objectives of this study were to find out whether 1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using INSERT strategy was higher than those taught by using SQ3R strategy, 2) Students’ achievement in reading comprehension having high curiosity was higher than those having low curiosity, 3) there was an interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Quasi experimental research with factorial design 2 × 2 was used in this study. The total number of sample were 76 persons, with 38 students of each class (experimental and control classes). The first class was treated by using INSERT strategy and the second class was treated by using SQ3R strategy. The students were also divided into two groups based on curiosity, such as high and low curiosity. The data were collected through reading comprehension by using objective test, whereas for aptitude like curiosity, questionaire was used. The data were then analyzed by applying two-way ANOVA at the level of significance at α = 0.05. The data analysis revealed that (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using INSERT was higher than those taught by using SQ3R, with Fobs (27.32) > Ftab (3.98), (2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high curiosity was higher than those students with low curiosity with Fobs (6.92) > Ftab (3.98), (3) there was an interaction between teaching strategies and students’ curiosity on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with Fobs (15.43) > Ftab (3.98). Tuckey test was then applied to verify the interaction between each sample comparison.

A STUDY OF ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION USING CONTENT-BASED INSTRUCTION APPROACH

The purposes of this study were to investigate students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by Content-Based Instruction (CBI) Approach and to study the attitude of students through the approach. The samples of this study were fifty of grade ten students who enrolled English course at Khowangwittayakhom School, Yasothorn. The samples were selected by a simple random sampling. The instrument used in this study consisted of ten content-based instruction lesson plans, reading pre-test and post-test, and questionnaire. The data were analyzed statistically in the form of t-test, arithmetic mean and standard deviation. The research findings as the effectiveness of English reading after using Content-Based Instruction Approach in teaching was significantly higher than before teaching at critical level 0.05 and the students’ attitude toward using Content-Based Instruction Approach was at a good level.

The Effect of Teaching Strategies and Curiosity on Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension

The objectives of this study are to investigate whether: (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Problem-Based Learning stretegy is higher than students’ achievement in reading comprehension by using Reciprocal Teaching strategy, (2) reading comprehension achievement of high curiosity students is higher than reading comprehension achievement of low curiosity students, and (3) there is significant interaction between teaching stretegies and students’ curiosity on students’ reading comprehension achievement. An experimental research with factorial design 2x2 was used in this research. There were 120 students from 2012/2013 Academic Year of SMA BUDI AGUNG Medan as sample of this research. The result reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Problem-Based Learning stategy is higher than that of taught by using Reciprocal Teaching strategy, (2) reading comprehension achievement of high curiosity is higher than reading comprehension achievement of low curiosity, (3) there is signnificance interaction between teaching strategies and curiosity on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. After the Tukey test was applied, it showed that students have high curiosity got higher result if they were taught by using Problem-Based Learning strategy, and students have low curiosity got higher result if they taught by using Reciprocal Teaching strategy. The Effect of Teaching Strategies and Prior Knowledge on Students’ Achievement in Reading Comprehension

The objectives of this experimental research were to find out whether: 1) students achievement in reading comprehension taught by using directed reading thinking activity (DRTA) strategy was higher than taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy. 2) Students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high prior knowledge was higher than that students with low prior knowledge, and 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and prior knowledge on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade VIII of SMP Dwi Tunggal T. Morawa in 2012/2013 school year. Prior knowledge test was conducted for classifying the students upon the high and low prior knowledge. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significant . Scheffe –test result also showed that high prior knowledge students got higher achievement if they were taught by using directed reading thinking activity strategy while low prior knowledge students got higher achievement if they were taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy. The objectives of this study were to investigate whether: (1) Students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using SPE is higher than students’ Achievement in Reading comprehension taught by using SQ4R, (2) Reading comprehension achievement of high learning motivation students is higher than reading achievement of low learning motivation students, and (3) There is significant interaction between teaching reading methods and students learning motivation on students reading comprehension achievement. The learning motivation test was conducted for classifying the students upon the high learning motivation and the low learning motivation. The data were analyzed by applying Two-Way ANOVA. The Effect of Students’ Learning Models and Style on Students’ Achievement in Reading

The objectives of the research were to find out whether a) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Jigsaw model was higher than taught by using Task-Based Learning (TBL) b) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual style was higher than that students with auditory style. The population was the students of SMA Budi Murni 2 Medan with 104 students. The samples were 3 parallel classes and two classes by applying cluster random sampling. The questionnaire was administered for classifying the students upon the visual and auditory learning style. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significance α= 0.05. The result proved that students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Jigsaw was higher than that taught by using TBL, students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual learning style was higher than those with auditory learning style and there was interaction between models of learning and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. Moreover, Tuckey-test result also showed that visual style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using Jigsaw model while auditory style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using TBL model. The Effect of Teaching Strategies and Learning Styles on the Students’ Achievement

This research investigates 1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using Direct Reading Thinking Activity (DR-TA) strategy is higher than taught by using Know, What to Learn, and Learned (KWL) strategy, 2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with impulsive learning style is higher than students’ achievement in reading comprehension with reflective learning style, and (3) there is interaction between teaching strategies and learning styles on the students’ achievement. Two classes containing of 70 students were chosen as sample by apllying cluster random sampling technique. The experimental group 1 was treated by using DR-TA and the experimental group 2 was treated by using KWL. The students’ achievement was measured by using test. The questionnaire was conducted to find out the students’ learning style. The data were analyzed by applying two-ways analysis of variance. The findings show that (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using DR-TA higher than using KWL; (2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with impulsive learning style is lower than that with reflective learning style; (3) there is interaction between teaching strategies and learning styles on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The analysis revealed that the teaching strategies significantly affected the students’ reading achievement. The objectives of this experimental research were to investigate whether: 1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using CIRC method was higher than taught by using Jigsaw method. 2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual style was higher than those with kinesthetic style, 3) there was interaction between teaching methods and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. One hundred of 2011/2012 grade X students of SMAN 1 Delitua were selected as sample by applying cluster random sample technique. The research design was experimental research by using factorial design 2x2. Experimental group 1 was treated by using CIRC method and experimental group 2 was treated by using Jigsaw method. The questionnaire was conducted for classifying the students upon the visual and kinesthetic learning style. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension text was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significance α= 0.05. The result reveals that (1) students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using CIRC was higher than that taught by using Jigsaw method, with Fobs= 3.36>Ftab=2.70, (2) students’ achievement in reading comprehension with visual learning style was higher than that with kinesthetic learning style with Fobs= 8.64>Ftable=2.70, (3) there is interaction between teaching method and learning styles on students’ achievement in reading comprehension with Fobs=7.74>Ftable=2.70. The result of Scheffe-Test showed that visual style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using CIRC method while kinesthetic style students got higher achievement if they were taught by using Jigsaw method.
