The Eighth Annual Academic International Medicine Congress and Scientific Forum, July 14–16, 2023: Thinking Globally, Acting Locally

The first in-person Academic International Medicine Congress (AIM 2023) since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic took place at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, almost exactly 4 years after a meeting at the same location had to be canceled due to the global calamity. Featuring 3 days packed with high quality continuing medical education content and leadership development sessions, AIM 2023 set several important records for our organization. Among the most important sessions was the half-day strategic leadership retreat, with a goal of charting ACAIM’s path for the next 3-5 years. The main program featured more than 35 speakers and panelists, and offered more than 20 hours of continuing medical education credits. The scientific program included more than 30 abstracts and interesting case presentations. The AIM 2023 Gala and Awards Ceremonies were among the most attended attractions. This report includes a summary of key events and sessions from the AIM 2023 Congress, inclusive of published abstracts from the meeting. The Seventh Annual Academic International Medicine Virtual Congress and Scientific Forum, June 9–12, 2022

As the COVID-19 pandemic continued to fade, first glimpses of “post-pandemic normal” began to emerge in the late 2021 and early 2022. This new hope came with a positive new momentum – an opportunity to transform and reinvent. Yet given a high degree of uncertainty extending well into 2022, the American College of Academic International Medicine made a strategic decision in the late 2021 to move forward with Virtual 7th Annual Congress and Scientific Forum (AIM 2022). The theme of this year's meeting was “Building a Stronger Future” and reflected the early post-pandemic optimism. Primary organization of the meeting was facilitated by the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, Sarasota, Florida, with substantial contributions provided by Northwell Health, Long Island, New York. The Scientific Forum once again took place virtually, enabling participants from around the globe to present their research. A summary of these efforts and outcomes is provided in this article. The Sixth Annual Academic International Medicine Virtual Congress and Scientific Forum, May 21–23, 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic continued to dominate the discourse within the Academic International Medicine (AIM) community during 2021. Although there were early signs of slow but steady pandemic recovery and the promise of “postpandemic world” was emerging, we were far from declaring victory in this healthcare battle of the century. What is certain is that our collective resilience and innovative spirit have never been more instrumental in alleviating the effects of a global calamity. With the goal of providing top-quality, highly relevant content for our membership, the American College of Academic International Medicine made a strategic decision in the late 2020 to move forward with Virtual 6th Annual Congress and Scientific Forum (AIM 2021). The theme of this year's meeting was “Best Practices in Shifting Landscapes” and reflected the rapidly changing environment we continue to operate in. Primary organization of the meeting was facilitated by the Louisiana State University Spirit of Charity Emergency Medicine Residency Program in New Orleans, with substantial contributions provided by the SUNY Downstate Medical Center team from Brooklyn, New York. The Scientific Forum was also transitioned to a virtual platform, enabling participants from around the globe to present their research. A summary of these efforts and outcomes is provided in this article. The World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Emergency and Trauma (WHO-CCET) in South East Asia, The World Academic Council of Emergency Medicine (WACEM), and The American College of Academic International Medicine (ACAIM) 2021 Framework for using Telemedicine Technology at Healthcare Institutions.

The coronavirus disease 2019 crisis has forced the world to integrate telemedicine into health delivery systems in an unprecedented way. To deliver essential care, lawmakers, physicians, patients, payers, and health systems have all adopted telemedicine and redesigned delivery processes with accelerated speed and coordination in a fragmented way without a long-term vision or uniformed standards. There is an opportunity to learn from the experiences gained by this pandemic to help shape a better health-care system that standardizes telemedicine to optimize the overall efficiency of remote health-care delivery. This collaboration focuses on four pillars of telemedicine that will serve as a framework to enable a uniformed, standardized process that allows for remote data capture and quality, aiming to improve ongoing management outside the hospital. In this collaboration, we recommend learning from this experience by proposing a telemedicine framework built on the following four pillars-patient safety and confidentiality; metrics, analytics, and reform; recording of audio-visual data as a health record; and reimbursement and accountability.

Impacts and challenges to education in academic international medicine during a global pandemic

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic of 2020 has had profound impacts on medical education, both domestic and abroad. In this consensus paper from the American College of Academic International Medicine, we systematically discuss the impact of the pandemic both immediately and long term on international medical education, bedside teaching, procedural teaching, didactics and curriculum, accreditation, and mental health of medical teachers and learners. We discuss some strategies that have been implemented to mitigate the negative impact of the pandemic while providing reasons for hope in the future.
