Coliform bacteria are a group of bacteria that originate from human and animal feces in large numbers, so they are often used as indicators of food and water quality. This study aims to determine the condition of the aquatic environment based on biological indicators such as the abundance of coliform bacteria in river water and wells in Hu'u sub-district, Dompu district. Data on coliform bacteria and water quality were sourced from PT STM based on the survey results of PT Intertek and PT Sucofindo in several rivers and wells in 2021. The results of data analysis show that most rivers have coliform bacteria density values exceeding the quality standards set by the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Health. This is probably because many residents and cattle still dispose of their feces in the river.

Ecological–microbiological studies of lake Beloe in winter and spring with the use of innovation test-systems

Chlorophyll a concentration, the total abundance of bacteria, the number of bacterial cells with active metabolism, and the abundance of saprotrophic bacteria were studied in the surface and bottom water layers of Lake Beloe in winter and spring 20152016. The abundance of sanitary-indicator microorganisms was determined for the first time with the use of Petrifilm test-systems (3MTM Petrifilm). In most cases, Lake Beloe water in spring and winter was found to correspond to eutrophic level (in terms of chlorophyll a concentration in water) and polysaprobic status (in terms of microbiological indices). By its sanitary-microbiological characteristics, the lake is clearthe values of the total microbial count, determined with the use of test-systems 3M Petrifilm Aqua (AQHC), were 1000 CFU/mL, and the abundance of coliform bacteria, determined with the use of test-systems 3M Petrifilm Aqua (AQСC), varied from 20 to 135 CFU/100 mL. Coliform bacteria were mostly found in the bottom water layer. It was shown that, in the organization of ecologicalmicrobiological studies, special attention is to be paid to the bottom horizons of water bodies.

The occurrence of coliform bacteria in the cave waters of Slovak Karst, Slovakia.

The diversity and abundance of coliform bacteria (taxonomically enterobacterias), an important quality water indicator, were determined for four representative caves in Slovak Karst: Domica Cave, Gombasecká Cave, Milada Cave and Krásnohorská Cave. Three hundred and fifty-two enterobacterial isolates were successfully identified by biochemical testing (commercial ENTEROtest 24) and selected isolates confirmed by molecular techniques (PCR, 16S rDNA sequence analysis). A total of 39 enterobacterial species were isolated from cave waters, with predominance of Escherichia coli, Serratia spp. and Enterobacter spp. PCR amplification of lacZ gene is not specific enough to provide a reliable detection of coliform bacteria isolated from the environment. Sequence analysis of 16S rDNA confirmed that all of the selected isolates belong to the family Enterobacteriaceae. In general, physical and chemical parameters of cave waters in Slovak Karst corresponded to national drinking water quality standards.

Influence of Physicochemical Parameters on the Abundance of Coliform Bacteria in an Industrial Site of the Hooghly River, India

Industrial effluents from jute, paper, pulp mills and sewage from households are regularly discharged into the Hooghly River. It generates a potential risk for both humans and animals of the area concerned. In the present study, water quality of the Hooghly River passing by the site of a growing township (Naihati, North 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India) was assessed throughout the year 2010 on the basis of the data collected on the physicochemical and microbiological parameters. The water samples collected on each month revealed the presence of higher amount of coliform bacteria, Streptococcus sp. and Escherichia coli, than the standard limit. Different physicochemical parameters like chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solids, total dissolved solids (TDS), total hardness, alkalinity, chlorinity, nitrate and nitrite of the water at the sampling sites were found to be considerably higher than the levels standardized by WHO (2006). It was found that the relative abundance of Streptococcus and E. coli was influenced by two independent variables (water quality parameters), namely, DO and TDS. The abundance of coliform bacteria in the water sample warrants the adoption of proper measures to reduce the pollution level at the point source on way of scientific disposal of industrial effluents.

Suspended sediment transport, sedimentation, and resuspension in Lake Houston, Texas: Implications for water quality

Lake Houston is a man-made reservoir located northeast of Houston, Texas. The purpose of this investigation was to document suspended sediment transport, sedimentation, and resuspension in the lake with a view towards estimating the influence of sedimentation on water quality. Sediment traps were placed in strategic locations in the lake to collect suspended sediments. Samples were analyzed for bulk density, grain size, organic carbon, and a number of trace elements. These data were analyzed along with meteorological data to examine those factors which regulate suspended sediment input and dispersal, and the role of suspended sediments in controlling water quality within the lake. Sediment input to the lake depends primarily on the intensity of rainfall in the watershed. Sediment movement within the lake is strongly influenced by wave activity, which resuspends sediments from shallow areas, and by wind-driven circulation. The increased residence time of suspended sediments due to resuspension allows greater decomposition of organic matter and the release of several trace elements from sediments to the water column. Virtually all samples from sediment traps suspended between 1 and 5 m above the lake bottom contain medium to coarse silt, and even some very fine sand-sized material. This implies that circulation in Lake Houston is periodically intense enough to transport this size material in suspension. During winter, northerly winds with sustained velocities of greater than 5 m/sec provide the most suitable condition for rapid (<1 d) transport of suspended sediment down the length of the lake. Fluctuations in current velocities and the subsequent suspension/deposition of particles may explain variations in the abundance of coliform bacteria in Lake Houston.

The effect of tidal heights on the distribution and abundance of coliform bacteria in the sediments of two sites in the Mersey Estuary

An investigation of the tidal factors controlling the abundance and distribution of coliform bacteria in the sediments of two intertidal sites in the River Mersey (U.K.) was made during 1976. Samples were collected, at approximately weekly intervals, from September to December. Counts of the total coliform, faecal coliform and E. coli type I, were made in order to relate the numbers of bacteria to the salinity conditions of the tidal waters covering the sites. Correlations were observed between coliform counts, chloride content and tidal heights.
