Climate change could negate U.S. forest ecosystem service benefits gained through reductions in nitrogen and sulfur deposition

Climate change and atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) impact the health and productivity of forests. Here, we explored the potential impacts of these environmental stressors on ecosystem services provided by future forests in the contiguous U.S. We found that all stand-level services benefitted (+ 2.6 to 8.1%) from reductions in N+S deposition, largely attributable to positive responses to reduced S that offset the net negative effects of lower N levels. Sawtimber responded positively (+ 0.5 to 0.6%) to some climate change, but negatively (− 2.4 to − 3.8%) to the most extreme scenarios. Aboveground carbon (C) sequestration and forest diversity were negatively impacted by all modelled changes in climate. Notably, the most extreme climate scenario eliminated gains in all three services achieved through reduced deposition. As individual tree species responded differently to climate change and atmospheric deposition, associated services unique to each species increased or decreased under future scenarios. Our results suggest that climate change should be considered when evaluating the benefits of N and S air pollution policies on the services provided by U.S. forests.

Estimating Forest Canopy Height based on GEDI Lidar Data and Multi-source Remote Sensing Images

Abstract. Estimating forest canopy height is crucial for assessing aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration. Light detection and ranging (lidar) is an important technology for its ability in capturing vertical structural information. However, due to instrument limitations and cost constraints, acquiring large-scale and continuous forest data solely through lidar is challenging. To compensate this, remote sensing images can be used to cover wide regions. Therefore, leveraging multi-source data for constructing canopy height models (CHMs) holds great promise in this field. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the contributions of multi-source remote sensing data and methods in estimating forest canopy height. In constructing the CHM, the commonly used random forest (RF) and fully convolutional network (FCN) are assessed. The canopy height obtained from GEDI was used as the reference data, and Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2 data were used for prediction. Multiple CHMs were constructed for the Dabie Mountains, Central China, in 2019 based on different data sources and methods, respectively, which are then comparatively analysed. The results showed that (1) the accuracy of the CHM using Sentinel-2 as input is marginally better than that using Landsat 8 based on RF, where the difference is insignificant; and (2) FCN is less accurate than RF despite domain-specific fine-tuning, although further improvement in accuracy is expected by weighing in more FCN models.

Modelling and Mapping of Aboveground Carbon of Oluwa Forest Reserve Using LandSat 8 TM and Forest Inventory Data

This study was conducted in Oluwa Forest Reserve to assess and predict its aboveground carbon sequestration potentials using LandSat Thematic Mapper data. The Oluwa Forest Reserve, Ondo State, Nigeria, is recognized for its rich biodiversity and extensive size. To estimate its forest aboveground biomass and carbon should be complex and costly endeavour requiring the expertise of various professionals and equipment. Consequently, this study explored the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) technology using LandSat bands to estimate spectral indices in fitting linear models to predict the aboveground carbon sequestration potentials of the tropical rainforest ecosystem of Oluwa Forest Reserve. The observed aboveground carbon from sample plots and the estimated spectral indices were used to model the spread of aboveground carbon of Oluwa Forest Reserve. Positive linear relationship exists between the observed and the spectral indices data estimated. Therefore, linear models were fitted and the best-fit was determined using statistical measures. The aboveground carbon average estimated from the sample plots and the predicted were 150.70 t/ha and 149.80 t/ha, respectively. The coefficient of determination 94% and Root Mean Square Error = 6.38E-16, respectively were obtained statistically. The chosen model predicts the aboveground carbon spread of Oluwa Forest Reserve adequately. The study revealed that spectral data, GIS and RS are critical for large forest aboveground carbon modelling and mapping for efficiency.

Continuous In-woods Production of Biochar Using a Trailer-mounted Air Curtain Burner.

Fuel treatments and other forest restoration thinning practices aim to reduce wildfire risk while building forest resilience to drought, insects, and diseases and increasing aboveground carbon (C) sequestration. However, fuel treatments generate large amounts of unmerchantable woody biomass residues that are often burned in open piles, releasing significant quantities of greenhouse gases and particulates, and potentially damaging the soil beneath the pile. Air curtain burners offer a solution to mitigate these issues, helping to reduce smoke and particulates from burning operations, more fully burn biomass residues compared to pile burning, and eliminate the direct and intense fire contact that can harm soil beneath the slash pile. In an air curtain burner, burning takes place in a controlled environment. Smoke is contained and recirculated by the air curtain, and therefore burning can be conducted under a variety of climatic conditions (e.g.,wind, rain, snow), lengthening the burning season for disposal of slash material. The mobile pyrolysis unit that continuously creates biochar was specifically designed to dispose of residual woody biomass at log landings, green wood at landfills, or salvaged logged materials and create biochar in the process. This high-carbon biochar output can be used to enhance soil resilience by improving its chemical, physical, and biological properties and has potential applications in remediating contaminated soils, including those at abandoned mine sites. Here, we describe the general use of this equipment, appropriate siting, loading methods, quenching requirements, and lessons learned about operating this new technology.

Estimation of Corn Net Primary Productivity and Carbon Sequestration Based on the CASA Model: A Case Study of the Fen River Basin

The utilization of remote sensing technology to assess changes in crop net primary productivity (NPP), biomass, and carbon sequestration within the Fen River Basin, a crucial agricultural region in China, is important for achieving agricultural modernization, enhancing ecological environment quality, and obtaining carbon neutrality objectives. This study employed satellite remote sensing and the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach (CASA) model as research methods to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of corn NPP in the Fen River Basin. Correlation analysis was conducted to examine the response of corn NPP to various environmental factors in the region, while aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration of corn were estimated using a biomass inversion model driven by NPP and principles of photosynthesis in green plants. The findings revealed that, from a temporal perspective, corn NPP in the Fen River Basin exhibited a unimodal variation pattern, with an average value of 368.65 gC/m2. Spatially, the corn NPP displayed a discernible differentiation pattern, with the highest values primarily observed in the middle reaches of the Fen River Basin. Throughout the spatial and temporal variations in corn NPP during 2011–2020, the carbon sequestration capacity of corn exhibited an upward trend, particularly since 2017. The corn NPP displayed a positive correlation with temperature and precipitation. The response to solar radiation was mildly negative and a mildly positive correlation. In 2020, the aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration of corn followed a normal distribution, with the highest values concentrated in the northwestern part of the lower Fen River.

Estimation on Individual-Level Carbon Sequestration Capacity of Understory Perennial Herbs

AbstractThe carbon sequestration capacity of plants has been used as a nature-based solution to reduce carbon emissions. Perennial herbs potentially contribute to carbon sequestration by allocating carbon to belowground parts as well as trees. As individual-level estimations have mainly been carried out for tree species, individual-level carbon sequestration for understory perennial herb species is poorly understood. To estimate the below- and aboveground carbon sequestration capacity, ten perennial herb species were planted for field experiment. Individual carbon sequestration by biomass was calculated by measuring the aboveground- and estimating belowground biomass gain at harvest. We further measured non-destructive aboveground parameters, such as photosynthesis and leaf area, to estimate the belowground biomass. Four species (Aconitum jaluense Kom., Aquilegea oxysepala Trautv. & C.A.Mey., Disporum smilacinum A.Gray, and Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum (Miq.) Ohwi) showed the positive belowground carbon sequestration level during the experimental period. Correlation analyses indicated that the aboveground biomass and leaf area at senescence stage could be used as non-destructive estimates of belowground carbon sequestration. The perennial herb species habitat suitability for use as additional carbon sinks in urban forests and for forest restoration should be assessed based on the increase in belowground biomass.

Site-specific additionality in aboveground carbon sequestration in set-aside forests in Flanders (northern Belgium)

IntroductionIn situ carbon sequestration in forests is important in the context of climate change mitigation, and setting aside managed forests has been proposed as an option for increased carbon sequestration. Comparing set-aside and managed forests may provide insights and rules of thumb on the potential for additional in situ carbon sequestration in set-aside forest.MethodsIn an observational study, we compared re-inventory data from the network of set-aside forest reserves in Flanders, which have been unmanaged for 17–66 years (2 surveys with a 10 years interval), with re-inventory data from the regional forest inventory, representing the overall forest area in Flanders (2 surveys with a 15 years interval).ResultsThe aboveground carbon pools and sequestration rates were higher in the set-aside forests compared to the average forest in Flanders. In the average Flemish forest, the aboveground carbon pool increased from 64.7 to 85.1 tC ha−1, over a period of 15 years. In the set-aside forests, the mean pool was higher at the first measurement and further increased from 84.8 to 102.4 tC ha−1, over a period of 10 years. The mean aboveground annual carbon sequestration rate was 1.3 tC ha−1 year−1 in the average forest in Flanders and 1.8 tC ha−1 year−1 in the set-aside forests. The stocks and fluxes depended on the soil conditions and were higher in set-aside forests on silt and sandy silt sites compared to wet and sand sites. The set-aside forests on dry sites showed additionality in in situ aboveground carbon sequestration. We saw no indication of approaching a culmination point in the first decades following set-aside: plots with high carbon pools did not show lower carbon sequestration. In conclusion, set-aside forests can combine high carbon pools with high sequestration rates on suitable sites. Under the current management policy, we expect Flemish forests—regular and set-aside—to further increase their carbon pools in the coming decades.

Aboveground carbon sequestration of Cunninghamia lanceolata forests: Magnitude and drivers

Understanding the spatial variation, temporal changes, and their underlying driving forces of carbon sequestration in various forests is of great importance for understanding the carbon cycle and carbon management options. How carbon density and sequestration in various Cunninghamia lanceolata forests, extensively cultivated for timber production in subtropical China, vary with biodiversity, forest structure, environment, and cultural factors remain poorly explored, presenting a critical knowledge gap for realizing carbon sequestration supply potential through management. Based on a large-scale database of 449 permanent forest inventory plots, we quantified the spatial-temporal heterogeneity of aboveground carbon densities and carbon accumulation rates in Cunninghamia lanceolate forests in Hunan Province, China, and attributed the contributions of stand structure, environmental, and management factors to the heterogeneity using quantile age-sequence analysis, partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM), and hot-spot analysis. The results showed lower values of carbon density and sequestration on average, in comparison with other forests in the same climate zone (i.e., subtropics), with pronounced spatial and temporal variability. Specifically, quantile regression analysis using carbon accumulation rates along an age sequence showed large differences in carbon sequestration rates among underperformed and outperformed forests (0.50 and 1.80 ​Mg⋅​ha−1·yr−1). PLS-PM demonstrated that maximum DBH and stand density were the main crucial drivers of aboveground carbon density from young to mature forests. Furthermore, species diversity and geo-topographic factors were the significant factors causing the large discrepancy in aboveground carbon density change between low- and high-carbon-bearing forests. Hotspot analysis revealed the importance of culture attributes in shaping the geospatial patterns of carbon sequestration. Our work highlighted that retaining large-sized DBH trees and increasing shade-tolerant tree species were important to enhance carbon sequestration in C. lanceolate forests.

Productivity and Carbon Sequestration Potential of Arecanut Cultivars under Malnad Region of Karnataka

A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Thirtahhalli, KSNUAHS, Shivamogga, Karnataka, India, where arecanut palms of eight cultivars were evaluated for growth and yield performance for two consecutive years. The above-ground carbon sequestration potential and the soil carbon sequestration potential were assessed. The cultivar SAS-1 performed superior over other cultivars for all the growth parameters under study viz., palm height (9.02 m), stem diameter (18.07 cm), number of leaves (9.84) and internodal distance (17.38cm). However highest yield of fruit bunch per palm was recorded in the cultivar Mohithnagar (20.28 kg), followed by Thirthalli local (17.92 kg), Sreemangala (17.46 kg) and Tarikere Local (15.31 kg). Maximum chali/ dried ripe nut yield was recorded in Thithalli local (3.29 kg), Mohithnagar (3.10 kg) and Sreemangala (2.80 kg). Significantly higher values for standing biomass (15.49 t/ha), carbon stock (7.75 t/ha) and carbon sequestration (28.43 t/ha) were recorded in cultivar SAS-1. Soil parameters viz., bulk density, soil organic carbon and carbon stock in soil was analyzed in the rhizosphere of respective cultivars and maximum soil organic carbon (13.10g/kg and 11.43g/kg at 0-30 & 30-60 cm depths respectively) and carbon stock (52.77 t/ha at 0-30 cm and 46.41 t/ha at 30-60 cm depth) were recorded in that of cultivar Sumangala.

Aboveground and Soil Carbon Stock of Teak Plantations under Varied Rainfall Regimes

Aims: Forest plantations are considered to be the most effective approach to reducing the atmosphere's rising carbon dioxide levels. The variation in the carbon stock under important plantation species and the heterogeneity across climatic regimes, however, are urgently needed.
 Place and Methodology: Research was conducted on seven-year-old teak plantations in Karnataka, India, to determine the above-ground and soil carbon sequestration potential of teak plantations under various rainfall regimes.
 Results: The teak plantations under high rainfall zone (RFZ) accumulated maximum above-ground biomass revealing the positive effect of rainfall the productivity. This was reflected in the total above-ground carbon sequestration of the plantations leading to maximum carbon storage under the high RFZ followed by medium and low RFZ. Further, the variation of the SOC along the soil depth was evident in the present study.
 Conclusion: According to the findings, rainfall significantly impacted above-ground carbon sequestration and SOC, with high rainfall leading to the greatest sequestration. The climate sensitivity of carbon sequestration demands elaborate studies to improve carbon storage in the plantations in future climate change scenarios.

Assessing evidence on the impacts of nature-based interventions for climate change mitigation: a systematic map of primary and secondary research from subtropical and tropical terrestrial regions

BackgroundNature-based interventions (NbIs) for climate change mitigation include a diverse set of interventions aimed at conserving, restoring, and/or managing natural and modified ecosystems to improve their ability to store and sequester carbon and avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Recent projections estimate that terrestrial NbIs can lead to more than one-third of the climate change mitigation necessary to meet the Paris Climate Agreement by 2030. Further, these interventions can provide co-benefits in the form of social and ecological outcomes. Despite growing recognition of the potential benefits, a clear characterization of the distribution and occurrence of evidence which supports linkages between different types of NbIs and outcomes for climate change mitigation, ecosystems, and people remains poorly understood.MethodsThis systematic map assesses the evidence base on the links between NbIs and climate change mitigation, social, and ecological outcomes in tropical and subtropical terrestrial regions. We searched three bibliographic databases, 65 organization websites, and conducted backward citation chasing within 39 existing evidence syntheses to identify relevant articles. Additionally, we reached out to key informants for additional sources of evidence. We then used machine learning to rank returned results by relevance at the title and abstract stage and manually screened for inclusion using predefined criteria at the title, abstract, and full text stages. We extracted relevant meta-data from included articles using an a priori coding scheme. Lastly, we conducted a targeted, complementary search to identify relevant review and synthesis articles to provide broader context for the findings of the systematic map.Review findingsWe included 948 articles in this systematic map. Most of the evidence base (56%) examined links between protection, natural resource management, and restoration interventions with changes to ‘proxy’ outcomes for climate change mitigation (changes to land condition, land cover, and/or land use). Other areas with high occurrence of articles included linkages between interventions within natural resource management and trees in croplands categories and changes to aboveground carbon storage and/or sequestration (17% of articles). A key knowledge gap was on measured changes in GHG emissions across all intervention types (6% of articles). Overall, articles in the evidence base did not often assess changes in co-benefits alongside direct or indirect changes for climate change mitigation (32%). In most cases, the evidence base contained studies which did not explicitly test for causal linkages using appropriate experimental or quasi-experimental designs.ConclusionsThe evidence base for NbIs is significant and growing; however, key gaps in knowledge hamper the ability to inform ongoing and future investment and implementation at scale. More comprehensive evidence is needed to support causal inference between NbIs and direct outcomes for climate change mitigation to better determine additionality, permanence, leakage, and other unintended consequences. Similarly, priorities emerging from this map include the need for coordinated and harmonized efforts to collect diverse data types to better understand whether and how other outcomes (e.g. social, ecological) of NbIs can be achieved synergistically with mitigation objectives. Understanding potential benefits and trade-offs of NbIs is particularly urgent to inform rapidly expanding carbon markets for nature.

Projecting future aboveground carbon sequestration rate of alpine forest on the eastern Tibetan Plateau in response to climate change.

The aboveground carbon sequestration rate (ACSR) of forests serves as an indicator of their carbon sequestration capacity over time, providing insights into the potential carbon sequestration capacity of forest ecosystems. To explore the long-term Spatiotemporal variation of ACSR in the transitional ecotone of theeastern Tibetan Plateau under climate change scenarios, we utilized a forest landscape model that was parameterized with forest inventory data from the eastern Tibetan Plateau to simulate this ecological function changes. The study found that climate warming had significant effect on forests ACSR in different types of forests. ACSR was significantly reduced (p<0.05) in cold temperate coniferous and temperate coniferous forests, whereas it was significantly increased in deciduous broad-leaved forests. However, the impact of climate warming on evergreen broad-leaved forests was found to be negligible. At the species level, climate warming has mostly suppressed the ACSR of coniferous trees, except for Chinese hemlock. The main dominant species, spruce and fir, have been particularly affected. Conversely, the ACSR of most broad-leaved trees has increased due to climate warming. In addition, at the landscape scale, the ACSR within this region is expected to experience a steady decline after 2031s-2036s. Despite the effects of climate warming, this trend is projected to persist. In conclusion, the forests ACSR in this region will be significantly affected by future climate warming. Our research indicates that climate warming will have a noticeable suppressive effect on conifers. It is imperative that this factor be taken into account when devising forest management plans for the future in this region.

Wildfires correlate with reductions in aboveground tree carbon stocks and sequestration capacity on forest land in the Western United States

In the United States (US), forest ecosystems are the largest terrestrial carbon sink, offsetting the equivalent of >12 % of economy-wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually. In the Western US, wildfires have shaped much of the landscape by changing forest structure and composition, increasing tree mortality, impacting forest regeneration, and influencing forest carbon storage and sequestration capacity. Here, we used remeasurements of >25,000 plots from the US Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) program and auxiliary information (e.g., Monitoring Trends in Burn Severity) to characterize the role of fire along with other natural and anthropogenic drivers on estimates of carbon stocks, stock changes, and sequestration capacity on forest land in the Western US. Several biotic (e.g., tree size, species, and forest structure) and abiotic factors (e.g., warm climate, severe drought, compound disturbances, and anthropogenic interventions) influenced post-fire tree mortality and regeneration and had concomitant impacts on carbon stocks and sequestration capacity. Forest ecosystems in a high severity and low frequency wildfire regime had greater reductions in aboveground biomass carbon stocks and sequestration capacity compared to forests in a low severity and high frequency fire regime. Results from this study can improve our understanding of the role of wildfire along with other biotic and abiotic drivers on carbon dynamics in forest ecosystems in the Western US.

Estimation of the aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration in an urban forest remnant using aerial photogrammetry from a low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

Estimation of the aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration in an urban forest remnant using aerial photogrammetry from a low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Biodiversitas 24: 1908-1915. For low-income nations, a low-cost Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) offers an alternative to the traditional time-intensive forest survey that requires many resources. This study was conducted in the remnant forest with the dominant tree species, Dipterocarpus alatus Roxb., forming the upper canopy. Photogrammetry techniques with UAV images were used to obtain the Canopy Height Model (CHM). The results of tree height, individual tree detection, biomass, and carbon sequestration were compared between ground truthing and photogrammetry estimation. The large percentages of trees were automatically recognized. However, due to a closed forest canopy, some trees might have been left out from the actual count, leading to an undercounting of trees and an underestimation of the aboveground biomass (AGB). The photogrammetric dataset demonstrated a good tree height extraction accuracy and did not differ significantly from that determined by ground truthing (RMSE=2.59 m and 8.24%). The mean predicted height AGB from direct measurement was 24.76 tons ha-1, higher than those obtained from single- and multi-set photogrammetry, 5.41 and 17.99 tons ha-1, respectively. AGB and carbon sequestration estimated from photogrammetry were 72.66% of the ground truthing value. The accuracy of the photogrammetry results was acceptable and feasible for detecting individual tree heights, biomass, and carbon sequestration in the remnant forest. Overall, low-cost UAV could create a cost, time-efficient, and reasonably accurate local-scale forest inventory.

Carbon sequestration potential of different forest types in Pakistan and its role in regulating services for public health.

A high amount of CO2 causes numerous health effects, including headaches, restlessness, difficulty in breathing, increased heart rate, high blood pressure, asphyxia, and dizziness. This issue of increasing atmospheric CO2 can only be solved via above-ground and below-ground carbon sequestration (CS). This study was designed to determine the relationship between CS with the crown area (CA), diameter at breast height (DBH), height (H), species richness (SR), and elevation in different forest types of Pakistan with the following specific objectives: (1) to quantify the direct and indirect relationship of carbon sequestration with CA, DBH, H, and SR in various natural forest types and (2) to evaluate the effect of elevation on the trees functional traits and resultant CS. We used the linear structural equation model (SEM) for each conceptual model. Our results confirmed that the highest CS potential was recorded for dry temperate conifer forests (DTCF) i.e., 52.67%, followed by moist temperate mix forests (MTMF) and sub-tropical broad-leaved forests (STBLF). The SEM further described the carbon sequestration variation, i.e., 57, 32, 19, and 16% under the influence of CA (β = 0.90 and P-value < 0.001), H (β = 0.13 and p-value = 0.05), DBH (β = 0.07 and p-value = 0.005), and SR (β = -0.55 and p-value = 0.001), respectively. The individual direct effect of SR on carbon sequestration has been negative and significant. At the same time, the separate effect of CA, DBH, and H had a positive and significant effect on carbon sequestration. The remaining 20% of CS variations are indirectly influenced by elevation. This means that elevation affects carbon sequestration indirectly through CA, DBH, H, and SR, i.e., β = 0.133 and P-value < 0.166, followed by β = 0.531 and P-value < 0.001, β = 0.007 and P-value < 0.399, and β = -0.32 and P-value < 0.001, respectively. It is concluded that abiotic factors mainly determined carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems along with the elevation gradients in Pakistan. Quantifying the role of various forest types in carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction leads to improved air quality, which positively impacts human health. This is an imperative and novel study that links the dynamics of the biosphere and atmosphere.

Aboveground carbon sequestration rate in alpine forests on the eastern Tibetan Plateau: impacts of future forest management options

AbstractAlpine forests in the eastern Tibetan Plateau are important ecological barriers in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. However, due to continuous high-intensity harvesting, a large number of plantings, and the complete harvesting ban measures in recent decades, the forest tree species and age cohorts have become relatively homogenous, and the biodiversity and ecological functions have been reduced. To design effective forest management options to optimize forest structure and increase carbon sequestration capacity, Mao County in Sichuan Province was selected as the study site and six forest management options (harvesting, planting) of different intensities were tested using the LANDIS-II model to simulate and compare the differences in forest aboveground carbon sequestration rate (ACSR) between these options and the current management option over the next 100 years. Our results showed that (i) the different harvesting and planting intensities significantly changed the ACSR compared with the current management options; (ii) different communities responded differently to the management options, with the ACSR differing significantly in cold temperate conifers and temperate conifers but not in broad-leaved trees (P &amp;lt; 0.05); and (iii) a comprehensive consideration of forest management options at the species, community and landscape levels was necessary. Our results suggest that implementing a longer harvesting and planting interval (20 years) at the study site can maximize forest ACSR. This study provides an important reference for evaluating the ability of forest management options to restore forest ecological functions and increase carbon sequestration capacity and for selecting effective forest management programs in the eastern Tibetan Plateau.

Predicting aboveground biomass carbon sequestration potential in hybrid poplar clones under afforestation plantation management in southern Ontario, Canada

Afforestation systems as a pathway for natural climate solutions contributing to terrestrial C sequestration are influenced by agroclimatic conditions, tree species and clones. This study validated a regression equation to predict aboveground biomass C (AGBC) sequestration potentials of hybrid poplar clones under afforestation plantation and compared these clones’ adaptability to three levels of land suitability in four afforestation sites in southern Ontario, Canada. Results validated the proven ability of the GenOnBio model to reasonably predict AGBC content in all tested clones. This research suggests that DN154 and FFC1 having C sequestration rates of 2.19 and 2.13 Mg C ha-1 y-1, respectively, are suitable for marginal lands having high land suitability condition. In contrast, DTAC29, and DTAC26 (0.56 and 0.88 Mg C ha-1 y-1, respectively) should not be selected for the above land suitability. On marginal lands with severe limitations, NM6 (1.53 Mg C ha-1 y-1) showed the highest adaptability for AGBC sequestration. Our findings confirm that poplar afforestation on marginal lands in southern Ontario, at least up to the age of 15 years, can significantly contribute to AGBC sequestration, which in turn can have significant positive influence on the current 2 billion tree planting program initiated by the federal government.

The Role of Urban Forests as Carbon Sink: A Case Study in the Urban Forest of Banda Aceh, Indonesia

Forests have a role as carbon sinks and come under the spotlight when the world is facing the climate change problem. Urban forests have functions as the most effective carbon sinks. Banda Aceh City only has 7.15 ha of urban forest, and the vegetation that grows in the urban forest is essential for carbon emissions reduction. This study aimed to determine the potential tree biomass and carbon sink value in the BNI Urban Forest, Banda Aceh City, Indonesia. This study used vegetation analysis by inventory method with the census sampling method. The diameter of all trees was measured, and tree biomass, carbon stocks, and carbon sequestration were calculated. This study identified 16 tree species in the BNI Urban Forest with a total of 318 individuals, showing Casuarina equisetifolia as the most dominant tree (163 trees). The above-ground biomass, carbon stock, and carbon sequestration by the vegetation in the BNI Urban Forest were 24.66 tons/ha, 11.59 tons/ha, and 42.51 tons/ha, respectively. This study presented the vegetation conditions and the potential of carbon sequestration, which can be used to monitor and evaluate the benefits of the existence of urban forests in Banda Aceh. Effect of species diversity levels and microbial consortium on biomass production, net economic gain, and fertility of marginal land

AbstractIncreasing the income of crop growers per unit area and restoring the fertility of marginal soils are major challenges of agricultural sustainability in the Indian agrarian economy. This study investigates the benefits of plant communities consisting of Indian licorice (Abrus precatorius L.), stevia (Stevia rebaudiana B.), chilli (Capsicum annum L.), and a microbial consortium of four plant growth‐promoting bacteria and fungi (Bacillus pseudomycoides, Bacillus firmus, Aspergillus luchuensis, and Aspergillus tamarii) on production of plant biomass, income of growers, and its ability to improve soil fertility over a 2 year period. The three crop species were planted in all possible groupings at one, two, and three species diversity levels with three replication and two treatments, that is, with plant growth‐promoting microbes (PGPM) and without PGPM. The maximum increases in biomass (6.8 mega gram ha−1) and aboveground carbon sequestration (3.2 mega gram ha−1) were found for the three species diversity level of LSC (Indian licorice–stevia–chilli) plus PGPM. The highest belowground carbon sequestration (35 mega gram ha−1) and maximum soil fertility benefits [for example, pH (1.16‐times), electrical conductivity (7.53‐times), bulk density (1.84‐times), soil total organic carbon (3.99‐times), available nitrogen (5.95‐times), dehydrogenase (6.16‐times), microbial biomass carbon (4.06‐times), and colony‐forming units (4.44‐times)] were recorded at the two species diversity level of LC (Indian licorice‐chilli) with and without PGPM, compared with the soil properties before cultivation of these plants/additives. The highest net income (9.9 Lac ha−1 yr−2) was estimated for the two species diversity level (LS) plus addition of PGPM.
