Effect of 3d/4p Mixing on 1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering: Electronic Structure of Oxo-Bridged Iron Dimers.

1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (1s2p RIXS) has proven successful in the determination of the differential orbital covalency (DOC, the amount of metal vs ligand character in each d molecular orbital) of highly covalent centrosymmetric iron environments including heme models and enzymes. However, many reactive intermediates have noncentrosymmetric environments, e.g., the presence of strong metal-oxo bonds, which results in the mixing of metal 4p character into the 3d orbitals. This leads to significant intensity enhancement in the metal K-pre-edge and as shown here, the associated 1s2p RIXS features, which impact their insight into electronic structure. Binuclear oxo bridged high spin Fe(III) complexes are used to determine the effects of 4p mixing on 1s2p RIXS spectra. In addition to developing the analysis of 4p mixing on K-edge XAS and 1s2p RIXS data, this study explains the selective nature of the 4p mixing that also enhances the analysis of L-edge XAS intensity in terms of DOC. These 1s2p RIXS biferric model studies enable new structural insight from related data on peroxo bridged biferric enzyme intermediates. The dimeric nature of the oxo bridged Fe(III) complexes further results in ligand-to-ligand interactions between the Fe(III) sites and angle dependent features just above the pre-edge that reflect the superexchange pathway of the oxo bridge. Finally, we present a methodology that enables DOC to be obtained when L-edge XAS is inaccessible and only 1s2p RIXS experiments can be performed as in many metalloenzyme intermediates in solution.

1s2p RIXS Calculations for 3d Transition Metal Ions in Octahedral Symmetry

We present a series of 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) calculations for 3d transition metal ions in octahedral symmetry covering each ground state between 3d0 and 3d9. The calculations are performed in octahedral (Oh) symmetry using the crystal field multiplet theory. We discuss the crystal field effects and the selection rules with respect to the 1s2p RIXS pre-edge and compare their final state energies with the corresponding 2p X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS). The calculations provide a detailed understanding of 1s2p RIXS and serve as a basis for the future analysis of experimental spectra and also as a starting point for calculations that add additional channels including the nonlocal peaks.

1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering Magnetic Circular Dichroism as a probe for the local and non-local orbitals in CrO2

We have determined the magnetic ground state of the half-metal CrO2 based on 1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering Magnetic Circular Dichroism (RIXS-MCD) experiments. The two-dimensional RIXS-MCD map displays the 1s X-ray absorption spectrum combined with the 1s2p X-ray emission decay, where there is a large MCD contrast in the final state involving the 2p core hole.Our measurements show that the Cr K pre-edge structure is dominated by dipolar contributions and the quadrupole peak is invisible in direct K pre-edge absorption. Using RIXS-MCD, we reveal that the quadrupole 1s3d pre-edge has a large MCD contrast, which appears at lower energy with respect to the K pre-edge maximum.We use crystal field multiplet calculations to model the excitonic RIXS-MCD spectral shape in tetragonal (D4h) symmetry. The RIXS-MCD is strongly sensitive to the ground state distortion of the Cr4+ sites. The calculations of the RIXS-MCD maps suggest that the 3d spin–orbit interaction is fully quenched (ζ3d=0meV) and the ground state electron configuration must contain a 3B2g (D4h) contribution, which is required to explain the appearance of the Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) in the Cr K pre-edge. This is in apparent contrast with the compressed tetragonal distortion.

MHz pump and probe combined with XAS-XES

We implemented a MHz pump and probe scheme on beamline ID26 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The laser runs at 1.4 MHz in the ESRF 16b mode and thus pumps every fourth pulse with ca. 15 uJ per pulse and 350 fs pulse length. The beamline hosts an X-ray emission spectrometer and thus allows combining resonant inelastic X-ray scattering with a MHz pump and probe schemes. The scattered X-rays are recorded with an avalanche photodiode in single photon counting mode. We measured the transient spectra of the spin cross-over transition in [Fe(bpy)3]Cl2 of the non-resonant Ka lines and of 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the K absorption pre-edge of Fe. The Ka transient spectrum can be readily modeled using crystal field multiplet calculations because the spectra mainly depend on the Fe spin state. The 1s2p RIXS is richer in information because it also probes the unoccupied molecular orbitals and a theoretical interpretation is more challenging.

Temperature-Dependent 1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of CoO

The temperature-dependent 1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of CoO have been measured with 0.3 eV overall resolution, and the RIXS planes have been analyzed with multiplet calculations. The analysis of the high-resolution 1s2p RIXS plane allows a more detailed determination of the ground-state electronic structure, as compared to 1s X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The apparent absence of interference effects suggests that the lifetime broadening of the pre-edge states is (significantly) reduced from the edge lifetime broadening. The temperature-dependent RIXS planes are explained as a combination of the ground state and first excited state due to thermal population of the excited state, which are a result of the symmetry distortion, 3d spin–orbit coupling, and magnetic exchange interactions. Spin-state studies with XES and RIXS: From static to ultrafast

We report on extending hard X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) along with resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) to study ultrafast phenomena in a pump-probe scheme at MHz repetition rates. The investigated systems include low-spin (LS) FeII complex compounds, where optical pulses induce a spin-state transition to their (sub)nanosecond-lived high-spin (HS) state. Time-resolved XES clearly reflects the spin-state variations with very high signal-to-noise ratio, in agreement with HS–LS difference spectra measured at thermal spin crossover, and reference HS–LS systems in static experiments, next to multiplet calculations. The 1s2p RIXS, measured at the Fe 1s pre-edge region, shows variations after laser excitation, which are consistent with the formation of the HS state. Our results demonstrate that X-ray spectroscopy experiments with overall rather weak signals, such as RIXS, can now be reliably exploited to study chemical and physical transformations on ultrafast time scales.

1s2p Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of Iron Oxides

1s2p resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy has been measured for a series of iron oxides, including octahedral and tetrahedral Fe(II) and Fe(III) systems. Their spectral shapes have been analyzed and explained using crystal-field multiplet simulations. The RIXS planes and the K-edge and L-edge X-ray absorption spectra related to these RIXS planes will be discussed with respect to their analytical opportunities. It is concluded that the full power and possibilities of 1s2p RIXS needs an overall resolution of 0.3 eV. This will yield a technique with more detailed information than K-edge and L-edge X-ray absorption combined, obtained in a single experiment. Another major advantage is that 1s2p RIXS involves only hard X-rays, and experiments under essentially any condition and on any system are feasible.
