Exploring opportunities for public sector organisations to connect wellbeing to resource loops in a regional circular economy

ABSTRACT This paper contributes towards our understanding of the role of public sector organisations in delivering circular economy (CE) goals, suggesting that such organisations seek to deliver social value when implementing CE activities. Through empirical evidence from Wales, and a programme designed to deliver circular outcomes via increased collaborative working in public sector organisations, the paper shows that public sector actors interpret the CE as a means to deliver well-being outcomes. The paper shows that public sector organisations, in Wales, are seeking to exploit the maximum social value from CE activities. This, the paper argues, requires a nuanced attention to the context and circumstances in which public service delivery is implemented. A legislative framework, the Wellbeing Future Generations Act (2015), that promotes collaborative working with people and communities to prevent persistent problems such as poverty, health inequalities and climate change, is supporting the creation of a definition of a CE that connects people and wellbeing to resource loops. The key contribution of the paper is to provide an empirical model demonstrating how public sector organisations in Wales are enacting CE in Wales, mediating between and integrating the social, material and spatial elements of a CE.

The Relationship Between Tourism, Dog Ownership and Sustainability

The interplay between tourism and dog ownership presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities for sustainability. The relationship between tourism, dog ownership, and sustainability forms a complex nexus that is becoming increasingly relevant in contemporary socio-economic and environmental contexts. Tourism significantly impacts local economies and environments, and its relationship with dog ownership manifests in various ways. Tourist destinations that promote pet-friendly policies can see an increase in visitor numbers as dog owners are more inclined to visit places where their pets are welcomed. This can lead to increased spending in these areas but also poses potential sustainability challenges such as increased waste production and environmental degradation. Conversely, the presence of dogs in tourist areas can enhance the visitor experience, encouraging longer stays and promoting mental and physical well-being through pet interaction. This aspect can lead to a more sustainable form of tourism that values longer visits over quick, high-impact travel. However, managing the environmental impact of a larger number of pets, including waste management and habitat disturbance, is crucial for sustainability. Sustainability in the context of tourism and dog ownership also extends to the practices of accommodations and tourist attractions, such as the provision of eco-friendly pet amenities, promoting responsible pet ownership, and ensuring that tourism development does not harm local wildlife and ecosystems.

CONTRIBUTION OF GIS IN HEALTH PLANNING, CASES OF ONCOLOGY IN ALGERIA

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become an essential tool in health planning, allowing for the analysis and visualization of spatial data to improve healthcare. In Algeria, the use of GIS in oncological care is still in its early stages, but has the potential to greatly enhance the planning and delivery of cancer services. This study aims to assess the contribution of GIS to health planning in the provision of oncological care in Algeria. Specifically, we will examine how Network analysis can be used to identify areas with high accessibility, map out healthcare facilities and resources, and optimize the allocation of resources to improve access to cancer treatment.A review of existing literature on the use of GIS in health planning and oncological care will be conducted, along with an analysis of cancer incidence data in Algeria. GIS software will be used to map out accessibility rates, healthcare facilities, and population distribution to identify areas in need of improved oncological services. The results of this study will provide valuable insights into how GIS can be utilized to enhance health planning in the provision of oncological care in Algeria. By identifying areas with high accessibility rates and mapping out healthcare resources, policymakers and healthcare providers can better allocate resources to improve access to cancer treatment and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Skin Cancer Detection Based on Machine Learning

Skin cancer, particularly melanoma, poses a significant health risk, accounting for the majority of skin cancer-related fatalities in the United States. Despite representing a small fraction of skin cancer cases, melanoma has one of the highest death rates, stressing the critical need for early detection. The American Cancer Society projects approximately 100,640 new melanoma cases and approximately 8,290 related deaths for 2024, yet also notes high survival rates when caught early. In this context, our study employs machine learning to enhance early detection, analyzing a large dataset from The International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) featuring over 53,000 images across various skin conditions. We assess Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbors (K-NN), and Decision Tree classifiers through both binary and multiclass frameworks, with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) aiding in data dimensionality reduction and visualization. Our findings reveal SVM and K-NN as effective for binary classification, with K-NN excelling in multiclass scenarios. These results underscore the promise of machine learning in clinical settings, offering a path toward improved skin cancer diagnostic tools and underlining the importance of algorithm refinement and sophisticated data analysis techniques.

Quality of life of patients with permanent colostomy and low anterior resections (meta-analysis)

BACKGROUND: patients with rectal cancer after low anterior resections and with permanent colostomy inevitably face negative functional consequences of treatment. The question of anastomosis performing often remains unanswered. AIM: to compare the quality of life of patients with rectal cancer after low anterior resections and surgical treatment with a permanent colostomy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: literature search was performed in MEDLINE database according to PRISMA criteria using the keywords: “QoL”, “Quality of life”, “EORTC”, “low anterior resection” “rectal”, “stoma”, “ostomy” using suffixes [OR], [AND]. The meta-analysis included 9 retrospective studies with 2438 patients.RESULTS: no significant differences were found in global health status between the groups (p = 0.11). A significant difference with a worse score in ostomy patients is noted on the physical (p = 0.003), role (p = 0.002), emotional (p = 0.03) and social functioning (p = 0.004). In contrast, patients undergoing sphincter-preserving surgery have a higher incidence of constipation and diarrhea (p < 0.00001).CONCLUSION: patients with permanent stoma and after low anterior resections have comparable global health status. These patients have different profiles of disturbances in QoL patterns and functional consequences of surgery.

Analysis of the Clinical Effect of Chinese Medicine Combined with Acupuncture and Moxibustion on Insomnia

Objective: To explore and analyze the clinical efficacy of Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of insomnia. Method: 80 patients with primary insomnia were selected as the study sample, with 20 cases randomly selected as the control group and the rest as the observation group. The control group was treated with ordinary western medicine, while the observation group patients were treated with traditional Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture and moxibustion based on this syndrome differentiation. The comparison items were treatment effect, sleep quality, mental health, quality of life, specific sleep indicators, cerebral blood flow and neurotransmitters. Result: The treatment effectiveness showed that the observation group had a higher treatment effectiveness rate than the control group (P<0.05); The results of sleep quality showed that after treatment, the scores of the observation group were lower than those of the control group in seven dimensions: sleep quality, sleep time, sleep onset time, sleep efficiency, sleep disorders, hypnotic drugs, and daytime dysfunction score (P<0.05); The quality of life results showed that after treatment, the observation group had higher scores than the control group in eight dimensions: physiological function, physiological function, physical pain, health status, energy, social function, emotional function, and mental health (P<0.05); The results of slow wave sleep time and fast eye movement sleep time showed that after treatment, the HAMA and HAMD scores of the physiological mechanism in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05); The results of cerebral blood flow and neurotransmitter indicators show that after treatment, glutamate γ- the peak systolic blood flow velocity of aminobutyric acid, vertebral artery, and basilar artery in the observation group was higher than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The clinical treatment of Chinese medicine combined with acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of insomnia patients can significantly improve the clinical treatment effect, and improve the cerebral hemorrhage and neurotransmitter status of patients, promote the improvement of their physical and mental status, can more significantly improve the quality of sleep, reduce sleep difficulties, reduce the dosage of sleeping pills, which has important clinical application value.

Traditional Chinese Medicine's Spleen Strengthening and Intestinal Microecology

The "spleen" in traditional Chinese medicine is the "acquired foundation" and the "source of qi and blood biochemistry". Strengthening the "spleen" is one of the important treatment methods in traditional Chinese medicine; The gut microbiota has been a hot topic in modern scientific research in recent years, and its nutritional and immune functions correspond to some of the functions of the spleen in traditional Chinese medicine. In terms of philosophy, traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes the balance between the spleen and the gut microbiota, emphasizing the importance of supporting the right and eliminating evil, preventing diseases before they occur, seeking the root cause of treatment, and adapting measures to the three causes; Clinically, the treatment of obesity, constipation, diarrhea and other diseases by invigorating the spleen and the treatment mechanism of acupuncture and moxibustion, chiropractic and invigorating the spleen are all related to microecology. This article combines relevant literature on traditional Chinese medicine's "spleen" and "spleen health" to explore the treatment concept, clinical application, and correlation with intestinal microbiota of traditional Chinese medicine's "spleen health". It also elaborates on the latest literature, aiming to exchange ideas with peers and promote research on the microbiota of traditional Chinese medicine's "spleen".
