In recent years, in response to the rise in the attention paid to intellectual property rights, the fan base of online fiction has become a potentially valuable market for attracting readers. Within this field, the experienced readers are the most critical of this aspect of the development of chain of online fiction in practice. Therefore, we invited fifty experienced readers in Taiwan to participate an empirical research study. We examined important criteria of reading online fiction based on the viewpoint of Robert Escarpit’s sociology of literature, including critical literature reviews and the modified Delphi method. Accordingly, seven criteria were developed from three dimensions and are then analyzed according their weight, causal relationship and performance according to a multi- criteria decision-making approach, specifically the decision making trial and evaluation laboratory- based analytical network processing (DEMATEL-based ANP) approach. Moreover, we further adopted the Adults Reading Motivation Scale (ARMS) to measure the types of motivation that drives readers and conducted in-depth interviews to create our evaluation framework employing a mixed research methods approach. The results show that the reading behavior of most readers is influenced by the “publishing function” factor, which is also an important source for refining the market. Additionally, the factor of “channel” is important and can be easily influenced by the other factors. Moreover, the research results reveal different causal relationships among dimensions and criteria with different levels of motivation. Accordingly, we proposed an Escarpit’s sociology of literature-based causal relationship evaluation model for explaining the viewpoint of online fiction on the part of readers who have different levels of motivation. This study thereby widens the horizon of the market of online fiction by developing a comprehensive evaluation model from the perspective of the key factors of choosing to read online fiction and reading motivation.

In recent years, academic ethics has garnered increased attention in Taiwan. However, due to limited understanding and discussion of self-plagiarism, no clear consensus exists on principles and standards for recognizing and handling the issue. The purpose of this study is to clarify key concepts, regulations, and best practices regarding self-plagiarism so that local scholars can approach this new ethical issue from an informed perspective. Using the method of document analysis, published articles are analyzed to illustrate current norms related to self-plagiarism. This article examines the concept of self-plagiarism in terms of the emergence of concern for this ethical issue, relevant definitions, methods for recognizing its occurrence, common types and exclusions, and the importance of avoiding the pitfalls of self-plagiarism. The analysis also cites an actual case of self-plagiarism that took place in the Netherlands to illustrate the controversies surrounding self-plagiarism. In addition, the article summarizes the historical evolution of relevant norms of self-plagiarism in Taiwan and proposes methods to guide best practices regarding ethical scholarly writing and publishing. Popular scientific reading books, as the bridge between scientific academic research and general public’s knowledge capital, could raise scientific literacy and facilitate comprehension for general public. Popular scientific reading books could attract children to read because of vivid exhibition of text and illustrating graphs. However, some scientific reading books are still too difficult for children to read since they are not designed for children particularly in Taiwan and reading capacity among children are heterogeneous. One promising education strategy is to recommend more scientific reading books corresponding to textbook lessons, which could raise children’s interest in exploring science and further reading. In US, Lexile framework for reading has been developed and applied for English books to assist in more efficient and objective text leveling. For recent years, Chinese Readability Index Explorer (CRIE) has been developed for Chinese text. The main research question here is, for Chinese scientific reading books, whether there are differences in text leveling between system’s (CRIE) and experts’ identification. In our research, we invite teacher librarians to recommend popular scientific reading books, identify the grade levels, and assign these books to corresponding textbook lessons. We not only discuss the principles and criteria of experts’ leveling, compare the different results between CRIE and experts’ opinions, but also investigate the reasons behind these differences. This study aims to adopt a perspective of “play” to explore the impact of toy libraries on preschool children’s early literacy development. This study is qualitative in nature, taking place in two toy libraries affiliated with public libraries which hold large-scale toy collections and have offered long-standing toy lending services. Observations and interviews were conducted to explore the caregiver-child interactions and conversations mediated by toy collections in toy libraries and their impact on the development of early literacy skills. Study participants included 76 preschool children, 62 caregivers, and 7 librarians. Findings suggest that the impact of using toy collections in the toy libraries on preschool children’s early literacy development included: print motivation, vocabulary, oral language, narrative skills, letter knowledge (including English letters and Chinese characters), and school readiness (including social skills, logical thinking, hand-eye coordination, attention and persistence, creativity, and interest exploration). Meanwhile, findings also show that toy libraries help alleviate family economic pressure and become a place for caregivers and preschool children to socialize and share learning resources.

Agricultural communication covers all kinds of human communications involving agriculture, food, natural resources and rural interests. Such communications exchange and deliver the information of the agricultural and natural resource industries to the right receivers through effective media. Storytelling in marketing is also a managerial application; it is a marketing strategy that includes the agricultural industry. While an increasing number of agricultural businesses are promoting the application of agricultural stories in marketing and facilitating increases in the consumption of agricultural products, few researchers have explicitly developed valid tools for measuring the constructs of agricultural stories. This study continued previous research on effective model of storytelling in agricultural marketing, with the aim of exploring the constructs of a good agricultural story and developing the “Agricultural Story Scale” to measure them. Thirteen items measuring three factors—authenticity, narrative, and protagonist’s distinctiveness—were confirmed to have satisfactory structural model fit. The findings of the study and recommendations that contribute to both theoretical and practical implications are reported. Keywords: Agricultural Story; Agricultural Communication; Measurement; Storytelling; Storytelling in Marketing

Small-group teaching has been a preferred pedagogy in higher education, and it requires to communicate or seek information with peers. Therefore, collaborative information seeking (CIS) plays an important role in students’ group projects. The current study investigates undergraduate students’ individual differences and their CIS behavior when working on coursework-related group projects. A questionnaire was used, with 535 participants recruited from undergraduate students having related experiences. Results show that students with different individual differences exhibit different CIS preferences. Upperclassmen and task-oriented students tend not to work with others due to various concerns. Additionally, female, underclassmen, and task-oriented students used a wider variety of sources. Based on findings, several suggestions for instructors in higher education institutions were provided.
