Psychiatric Manifestations in Early to Middle Stages of Fragile X-Associated Tremor-Ataxia Syndrome (FXTAS).

The purpose of the present study was to assess the psychiatric manifestations of early to middle stages of fragile X-associated tremor-ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and their relationship with executive function and FMR1 cytosine-guanine-guanine (CGG) repeat numbers across genders. Cross-sectional data from 100 participants (62 men, 38 women; mean±SD age=67.11±7.90 years) with FXTAS stage 1, 2, or 3 were analyzed, including demographic information, cognitive measures, psychiatric assessments (Symptom Checklist-90-Revised and Behavioral Dyscontrol Scale-II [BDS-II]), and CGG repeat number. Participants with FXTAS stage 3 exhibited significantly worse psychiatric outcomes compared with participants with either stage 1 or 2, with distinct gender-related differences. Men showed differences in anxiety and hostility between stage 3 and combined stages 1 and 2, whereas women exhibited differences in anxiety, depression, interpersonal sensitivity, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and somatization, as well as in the Global Severity Index, the Positive Symptom Distress Index, and the Positive Symptom Total. Among male participants, negative correlations were observed between BDS-II total scores and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, as well as between anxiety and CGG repeat number. These findings suggest that even at early FXTAS stages, patients have significant cognitive and other psychiatric symptoms, with notable gender-specific differences. This study underscores the clinical and prognostic relevance of comorbid psychiatric conditions in FXTAS, highlighting the need for early intervention and targeted support for individuals with relatively mild motor deficits.

New insights into the petrogenesis of granitic rocks in southern Thailand, SE Asia tin belt: evidence from petrochemistry and geochronology

ABSTRACT The granitic rocks in the Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, southern Thailand, SE Asia Tin Belt, comprise gneissic biotite monzogranite, porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite, and porphyritic biotite monzogranite. Comprehensive field observations, petrography, mineral chemistry, and geochemistry establish gneissic biotite monzogranites as part of the Central Belt Granites (CBGs), while porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite as part of the Western Belt Granites (WBGs). CBG and WBG granitic units exhibit peraluminous, alkali-calcic, and magnesian magmatic series traits, reflecting an S-type granite character resulting from crustal partial melting. Significantly, scatter correlations in variation diagrams, combined with the enrichment of Cs, Rb, Th, U, Pb, Nd, and P, and the depletion of Ba, Nb, and Ti contents, point towards an S-type granite signature formed during collisional events. Crystallization conditions reveal CBG gneissic biotite monzogranite encountered P–T conditions of 2.97–3.85 kbar/680°C–733°C/11.1–14.4 km, while WBG’s porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite experienced 2.73–4.15 kbar/628°C–732°C/10.2–15.5 km and 2.47–3.80 kbar/651°C–728°C/9.2–14.2 km, respectively. Geochronological data indicate that CBG’s gneissic biotite monzogranite was emplaced from Early Cretaceous collision (128–119 Ma) of Indochina and Sibumasu terranes, while WBG’s porphyritic muscovite–biotite monzogranite and porphyritic biotite monzogranite were formed during the syn-collision of Sibumasu and West Burma terranes during Early Cretaceous (121–111 Ma) to Paleocene. Mineralogical and geochemical attributes of these granitic rocks exhibit strong relevance to Sn-W mineralization processes, indicative of a profound association.

Prevalence of bovine trypanosomosis and tsetse fly density in Loka Abaya and Derara districts in Sidama Regional State, Ethiopia.

Animal trypanosomosis is a significant livestock disease with economic and social repercussions, reducing the supply of animal products and restricting the utilization of animals for traction and transportation. In Ethiopia, it is prevalent and poses a major hindrance to the advancement of animal production. This repeated cross-sectional study was aimed at assessing seasonal variation in bovine trypanosomosis prevalence and tsetse fly density and identifying the potential risk factors in the Loka Abaya and Derara districts of the Sidama National Regional State. Blood samples were collected from 964 cattle, 484 samples during the dry season, and 480 during the wet season. The buffy coat method was employed to analyze these samples. Furthermore, 78 standard NGU traps were set up at various locations in the two districts during both seasons for entomological investigation. The overall apparent prevalence of trypanosomosis was 9% (95% CI 7.3-11.0), without a significant difference (p > 0.05) between the dry season (7.4%) and wet season (10.6%). The apparent prevalence was significantly higher in Loka Abaya (11.8%) than in Derara (6.3%) district (OR = 2.04; p = 0.003) and in cattle with black coat color (29%) than in mixed color (6.8%) (OR = 5.3; p < 0.001). The majority of infections were caused by Trypanosoma congolense (70%), followed by T. vivax (29%), and mixed infections (1%) with the two species. The average packed cell volume (PCV) was significantly (p < 0.0001) lower in infected animals (20.7 ± 4%) compared to uninfected ones (25.5 ± 5.4%), in cattle examined during the dry season (24.1 ± 6%) versus the wet season (26.1 ± 4.7%), in cattle sampled from the Loka Abaya district (24.2 ± 5.5%) versus Derara district (26 ± 5.3%), and in cattle with poor body condition (23.6 ± 5.7%) compared to those with good body condition (26.5 ± 5.3%). A total of 5282 flies were captured during the study, with 4437 (84%) being tsetse flies (Glossina pallidipes), 439 (8.3%) Tabanids, 190 (3.6%) Stomoxys spp., and 216 (4.1%) Musca spp. The apparent density (AD) of G. pallidipes was 28.4 flies/trap/day, showing no statistically significant difference between wet (32.1) and dry (24.6) seasons (p > 0.05). The AD of G. pallidipes was significantly (p < 0.001) higher in the Loka Abaya district (57.3) than in the Derara district (0.9). The study highlights a moderate trypanosomosis apparent prevalence and high AD of G. pallidipes, showing significant variation between the study districts but no seasonal difference. The observed apparent prevalence of trypanosomosis and tsetse fly density notably affects animal health and productivity. As a result, strategies for vector control like insecticide-treated targets, trypanocidal medications for infected animals, and community-based initiatives such as education and participation in control programs are recommended.

Characteristics of Sleep Disturbance and Comparison Across Three Waves of the COVID-19 Pandemic Among Healthcare Workers.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) suffered from a heavy mental health burden during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. We aimed to explore the differences in sleep disturbance in three waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in Taiwan among HCWs. Moreover, factors associated with sleep disturbances in the third wave were investigated. This study, with three waves of cross-sectional surveys, recruited first-line and second-line HCWs. The level of sleep disturbance and related demographic variables were collected through self-report questionnaires. Differences in sleep disturbance across the three waves were compared with analysis of variance. Factors associated with the level of sleep disturbance were identified using univariate linear regression and further used for multivariate stepwise and bootstrap linear regression to identify the independent predictors. In total, 711, 560, and 747 HCWs were included in the first, second, and third waves, respectively. For first-line HCWs, sleep disturbance was significantly higher in the third wave than in the first wave. The level of sleep disturbance gradually increased across the three waves for all HCWs. In addition, sleep disturbance was associated with depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, anxiety about COVID-19, vaccine mistrust, and poorer physical and mental health among first-line HCWs. Among second-line HCWs, sleep disturbance was associated with younger age, depression, PTSD symptoms, lower preference for natural immunity, and poorer physical health. The current study identified an increase in sleep disturbance and several predictors among HCWs. Further investigation is warranted to extend the application and generalizability of the current study.

Tuning the Inter-Metal Interaction between Ni and Fe Atoms in Dual-Atom Catalysts to Boost CO2 Electroreduction.

Dual-atom catalysts (DACs) are promising for applications in electrochemical CO2 reduction due to the enhanced flexibility of the catalytic sites and the synergistic effect between dual atoms. However, precisely controlling the atomic distance and identifying the dual-atom configuration of DACs to optimize the catalytic performance remains a challenge. Here, the Ni and Fe atomic pairs were constructed on nitrogen-doped carbon support in three different configurations: NiFe-isolate, NiFe-N bridge, and NiFe bonding. It was found that the NiFe-N bridge catalyst with NiN4 and FeN4 sharing two N atoms exhibited superior CO2 reduction activity and promising stability when compared to the NiFe-isolate and NiFe-bonding catalysts. A series of characterizations and density functional theory calculations suggested that the N-bridged NiFe sites with an appropriate distance between Ni and Fe atoms can exert a more pronounced synergy. It not only regulated the suitable adsorption strength for the *COOH intermediate but also promoted the desorption of *CO, thus accelerating the CO2 electroreduction to CO. This work provides an important implication for the enhancement of catalysis by the tailoring of the coordination structure of DACs, with the identification of distance effect between neighboring dual atoms.

Factors affecting psychiatrist hesitation towards epilepsy care and care for patients with epilepsy transitioning from pediatric to adult care: A survey by the Japanese Society of General Hospital Psychiatry

ObjectiveThis study was undertaken by the Epilepsy Subcommittee of the Japanese Society of General Hospital Psychiatry (JSGHP) to explore the challenges faced by psychiatrists in treating epilepsy and the difficulties encountered during the transition of patients with epilepsy (PWE) from pediatric to adult care. MethodsAn online survey targeting 1,980 JSGHP-affiliated psychiatrists was conducted from May to July 2022. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire on epilepsy care. We analyzed the factors associated with participant hesitancy to treat epilepsy and their professional characteristics. ResultsResponses were obtained from 545 of the 1,980 solicited psychiatrists (response rate: 27.5 %). The mean number of years of clinical experience in psychiatry was 20.9 ± 10.3 years. A majority of the psychiatrists were hesitant toward treating epilepsy (89.2 %) and managing the transition of PWE from pediatric services to adult care (83.3 %). Logistic regression analysis showed that the absence of hesitation toward epilepsy treatment was significantly associated with years of clinical experience in psychiatry (OR: 1.05, p = 0.002), being a board-certified epileptologist (OR: 4.36, p = 0.037), having colleagues who are specialists in epilepsy care that may be consulted in the workplace (OR: 2.12, p = 0.027), and general confidence in managing PWE transition from pediatric to adult care (OR 3.54, p < 0.001). Confidence in managing the transition was positively correlated with being a board-certified psychiatrist of the Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology (OR: 4.55, p = 0.048), being a board-certified psychiatrist of the JSGHP (OR: 1.75, p = 0.034), treating six or more PWE per month (OR: 3.54; 95 % CI, p < 0.001), and overall confidence in treating epilepsy (OR: 3.38, p < 0.001). ConclusionsAlleviation of reluctance to providing epilepsy care and managing the process of transition are correlated; however, the factors influencing each are distinct. To reduce resistance to epilepsy treatment, enhancing the knowledge of epilepsy and creating an environment conducive to consultations are essential. Improving transition-related outcomes, having substantial psychiatric expertise, and increasing opportunities to treat PWE are of great significance. The integration of these approaches may enable psychiatrists to alleviate hesitancy towards epilepsy care and enhance both treatment and transitional care modalities.
