Abstract

Summary Fruiting myxobacteria are common in soils from beaches and dunes in all climates within Enrope. The number of species increases from northern to southern Europe, and from semimarine soils to terrestrial dunes, respectively. Myxococcus fulvus, Myxococcus virescens, Chondrococcus coralloides, and Archangium gephyra occur most frequently. Polyangium fuscum, Podangium erectum, Podangium boletus, and Chondromyces pediculatus are rare and often confined to dunes. There are distinct differences in myxobacter microflora between coastal and inland soils.
