Abstract

The velocity of radiation chemical bleaching of aqueous oxygen- containing methylene blue solutions was measured in dependence on the concentration and composition of the aromatic carboxylic acids and esters added. Carboxylic acids show, even at low concentrations, a saturation of the protective effect, that is, the velocity of the bleaching was independent of the concentration of the protective material. The saturation effect is however dependent on the redox potential of the protective material and on the pH. Hamamelitannin possesses a special protective effect. Its protective effect depends lineariy on the concentration, shows no saturation effect, and at high concentrations exceeds that of thiourea. In oxygen-free solutions those substances that have the quinoid group have special protection effects.
