Abstract

Summary The music therapy project »Durch Musik zur Sprache« was implemented at primary schools and focuses on emotional and communicative aspects of the successful use of language. The medium of music shall enable children to communicate about themselves and what they experience. The project was evaluated in a mixed-method study through a pre-post design with a comparative group (N = 60). No significant changes in the area of language were found. But, in the social-emotional area, the music therapy group showed significant improvement for the areas enjoyment of talking, confidence in talking, task comprehen-sion, vocabulary, grammar and self-assertion. Only the effect on self-assertion was however significantly higher than in the comparative group. A qualitative single case study describes this effect and presents specific examples from the project.
