Abstract

Rhodium Catalyzed Carbonylation of Aromatic Nitro Compounds to Form Arylisocyanates. II. Studies on the Mechanism of the ReactionAromatic nitro compounds are carbonylated to form arylisocyanates in the presence of rhodium carbonyl complexes and metal halides of the groups VB and VIB of the periodic table. The reaction is first order in nitro compound. The desoxygenation of the nitro compound is the rate determining step of the reaction. Substituents in ortho‐position to the nitro group increase the reaction rate. A structure of an isolated intermediate is proposed from analytical and spectroscopical data.
