Abstract

A new method for the solution of the BOLTZMANN transport equation in the presence of an external magnetic field is proposed. Applying this procedure to the conduction electrons in a solid a general expression for the conductivity tensor is derived, which can be simplified by using the symmetry properties of the crystal. Conductivity tensor and magnetoresistance are given for the case of cubic solids and are compared with experiments on tungsten. Our results disagree with the theoretical expressions given by GARCIA-MOLINER. The method does not rest upon a power series expansion in the magnetic field and is therefore applicable to the intermediate field region.
