Abstract

The report describes the results of studies intended to show the aspects of hydrature and temperature in some species of miombo woodland (Julbernardia — Brachystegietum spiciformis) in Zambia and Rhodesia during the rainy season (December 1969) and the first period of the dry season (January — February 1970). The hydrature of the miombo woodland is well-balanced: the osmotic pressure of woody species is between 7 and 20 atm., the average rate of transpiration between 3 and 10 mg/g. min. The leaf temperature follows more or less the air temperature. The heat resistance in leaves and buds of Brachystegia spiciformis is near + 48°C. The frost resistance of the stems, estimated by the damage during the heavy frost of winter 1968, is low: -2 °C in Uapaca kirkiana , -4°C in Brachystegia spiciformis and Julbernardia globiflora . A lot of miombo species can move the pinnules against another. The evening process of closing the pinnules seems to be an autonomic diurnal movement, however the shutting movement during a very hot period of the day are influenced by the temperature of air and leaves, respectively. The phytogeographical distribution of miombo elements can be correlated with heat and frost resistance of the trees.
