Abstract

Hitherto, Nematoda, Gastropoda, Isopoda, Myriapoda, Arachnida, Insecta and hairs from Mammalia have been found as inclusions in Saxon amber of Miocene layers of the Bitterfeld district. Among the inclusions the insects dominate with more than 90%, followed by arachnids with 8%. The insects are represented by Diptera (80%), Hymenoptera (8%), Coleoptera (4%), Trichoptera (3%), and various other orders. The determinated inclusions belong to more than 150 families. 22 species have been described new for science. New aspects of the formation of the Saxon amber, the relationship to its inclusions as well as to those of the Baltic amber are discussed.
