Zur Geschichte der Nashorn-Pflege im Tiergarten Schönbrunn

Abstract

In 1856 the first rhino, an Indian rhinoceros, arrived in Schönbrunn Zoo. 150 years later, two Indian rhinoceros can be seen here again in a newly built, spacious enclosure. In the meantime only seven other rhinos, two Sumatran rhinoceros and five black rhinoceros, were shown in Schönbrunn Zoo. Up to now there has been no successful breeding of rhinos too, but a male and a female animal were kept together only from 1952 to 1965. The article gives a short description of the rhino-keeping in Schönbrunn Zoo and how the rhino came to Vienna. „ Jange“ and „ Sundari“, the new couple, lived as orphans in the Nepalese Royal Chitwan National Park without a view to a free future in their home because of their too close contact to men. They are a donation of the Nepalese „King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation“ and shall enrich the European Endangered Programme of the Indian rhinoceros.
