Abstract

The Federal Research Centre for Nature Conservation and Landscape Ecology (Bonn, Germany) has been, since 1990, in close contact with the State Government (Presidency) of Brazil, the Government of Central Brazil (State of Minas Gerais) and other Brazilian institutions (like Brandt Meio Ambiente). In some pilot projects (beginning 1991) habitat mapping - even in urban areas - and suggestions for nature conservation are an important part of the scientific work. The first investigations started in 1991, they continued in 1992. In this paper an overview is given about flora and vegetation of urban areas in Central Brazil. Especially the most frequent and typical plant communities are considered, because they are immportant as bio-indicators for urban development, landscape planning and nature protection
