Abstract

Streptovirudin is a complex of related nucleoside antibiotics. Eight components have been isolated in pure form. Both the antibiotic complex and the pure components were hydrolyzed by heating with acid. A sensitive method using mass spectrometry has been developed for the detection of the nucleoside bases uracil and dihydrouracil in the hydrolysates. Furthermore, the following fatty acids have been identified as degradation products on the basis of gaschromatographic and mass spectrometric studies: 10-methyl-2-undecenoic acid, 10-methyl-2-dodecenoic acid, 12-methyl-2-tridecenoic acid and 12-methyl-2-tetradecenoic acid.
