Abstract

This paper focuses on the expression of deontic modality in contemporary legal-diplomatic Ukrainian. The investigation is carried out on a corpus of Ukrainian translations of a EU directives. The software used to compare data is Antconc 3.2.4w 2011. Special attention is given to Ukrainian synonymic structures with deontic meaning of obligation. Findings confirm a high degree of lexical and morpho-syntactic variability in Ukrainian which increase the complexity of the translation of deontic modal auxiliary verbs. In any case mini-diachronic analysis reveals the stabilization process of two modal constructions: povynen + Infinitive and maty + Infinitive. Approaching this issue will necessarily entail further contrastive studies using parallel corpora.
