Abstract

Abstract The German language has borrowed many words from other languages due to their strong cultural influence which lasted for centuries. As most of these have been substantives, they have obligatorily received grammatical gender. The present article is an attempt at showing the principles which determined the grammatical gender of the loan-words witnessed in OHG sources from the 8th century.
