Abstract

Selected studies on synthesis, Spark Plasma Sintering, crystal structure and microstructure analysis along with mechanical properties by nanoindentation are presented for ZrB2, HfB2, OsB2, and IrB2 ceramics. ReB2 type hexagonal OsB2 and IrB2 powders were synthesized by mechanochemistry of their precursor elements, while commercial ZrB2 and HfB2 powders were used, where ZrB2, HfB2, and OsB2 powders were further pressure sintered using a SPS furnace. Densification, phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties by nanoindentation of these diborides were studied.
