Abstract

Diseases that can be passed between humans and animals are referred to as zoonotic. Of the known pathogens that plague humanity, 49% are zoonotic. Recent worldwide changes have caused an increase in cases of zoonoses and an actual increase in types of diseases. Specific areas of change include the increase in the number of pets and the changing role of the human-animal bond, the increase in the global movement of people and agricultural products, and the emergence of new diseases. Media coverage and an increase in the actual number of cases of existing and emerging zoonotic diseases have increased the need for consumers to find information about these diseases.
