Abstract
1. In the plane stress state two zones of plastic deformation form below the fracture surface of D16 alloy: a highly deformed microzone and a slightly deformed macrozone. Only one microzone forms in the plane strain state. 2. In the fcc materials, the presence or absence of the slightly deformed macrozone below the surface of static fracture should be regarded as a criterion of the realization of the conditions of the plane stress or plane strain state, respectively, in fracture of the specimens or components.
