Abstract

Abstract Describes the stratigraphic sequences and structure of the Pelagonian and Vardar zones in Greek Macedonia. The eastern and western borders of the Vardar zone had a substantially different history of development in the Mesozoic; only after the beginning of the Priabonian (Eocene) did both depositional areas subside together, to be covered by Molasse deposits. It is thus only from Priabonian time that the Vardar zone in Kossmat's sense became differentiated; it is essentially a hinterland trough whose individualization took place after the major Hellenide tectonic movements.
