Abstract

A species of Phomopsis causing the formation of zone lines in rotting lucerne crowns is briefly described. Zone line formation in inoculated sterile lucerne blocks was favoured by slow drying of the blocks. Phomopsis sp. inoculated onto lucerne blocks in combination with other fungi isolated from rotting lucerne crowns resulted in zones of inhibition between some of the paired combinations. However, there was no evidence to suggest that zone lines were formed by Phomopsis sp. as a result of antagonism between it and other fungi.
