Abstract

Measurements were made of gas consumption rates, the composition and temperature of flue gases, together with several other variables on direct vent gas-fired heating systems. Four heating systems were installed on the second floor of a three story apartment building located on St. Denis Street in Montreal (45.4N). The steady state efficiency of the system was found to be 80%. Unlike the on-off mode of control used in conventional warm-air systems, the zone-adjustable systems modulate the mass flow rate of gas to the burner. the net result if longer cycle time and reduced gas consumption. Typical cycle and daily performance curves are presented and the gas consumption characteristics of the system are discussed. An approximate method of estimating the seasonal efficiency of the system is described.
