Abstract

Oocyte cryopreservation holds promise for preserving fertility in women undergoing cancer therapies, and can be achieved by slow-rate freezing or vitrification. Oocyte slow-rate freezing compromises zona pellucida (ZP) function, necessitating insemination/fertilization by intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Whether oocyte vitrification causes similar ZP modifications is unknown. Objectives were to evaluate effects of vitrification/warming on oocyte fertilization by conventional in vitro insemination, ZP solubility, cortical granule (CG) release, fertilization by ICSI, and ability of fetuin to prevent ZP modifications.
