Abstract

An injury is an anatomical and functional disorder of tissue, organs and systems, occurring when the energy of force overcomes resistance of structures mentioned above (tissue, organs, and systems). Technological development of traffic, industry, agriculture and sports, along with natural disasters have increased overall number of injuries, thus marking trauma as an illness of modern society where permanent trauma epidemic is persistent. Trauma is the most common cause of death by the age of forty five, being the third most common cause preceded with cardiovascular and malignant diseases. Injuries of the locomotive system are the most common ones in both war and peace times. The paper aims to indicate to socio-medicinal and socio-economical importance of traumatism on region of Doboj. A retrospective study has been completed covering five year period from 01.01.2005. to 31.12.2009. In the aforementioned time period 21.757 injured persons have been covered, their injured being diagnosed and treated on orthopedic surgery, traumatology and general surgery, departments of Doboj regional hospital, covering area of about 300.000 inhabitants. Out of 21.757 injured persons, head injuries had 2.873 (13,21%), thorax injuries had 1.066 (4.90%), stomach injuries had 217 (1,00%) and locomotive system injuries had 18.416 (81,59%) persons. Out of the latter, 11.252 (61,10%) were injuries without bone fracture, and 7.164 (38,90%) were injuries with bone fracture. 5.430 (29,49%) persons had upper limbs injuries, and 7.424 (40,31%) had injuries of lower limbs. Fist injuries were the case in 4.737 (25,72%) persons, spine injuries in 592 (3,22%) cases, and 230 (1,25%) patients had pelvis injuries. Total number of injured male persons were 14.289 (65,68%), able to work persons (persons between 18 and 65 years of age) were in number of 12.738 (58,54%), and 18.416 (81,59%) patients had a trauma of locomotive system. Large number of injuries in overall population followed by a high percentage of trauma of locomotive system indicate to a presence of socio- medicinal and socio-economical problem in our region, which must draw attention of not only the health system, but of society as a whole.
