Abstract

The impact of a milling and smelting industry in the coastal region of Rio de Janeiro is evaluated based on production and environmental parameters. These approaches are compared using deposition rates in coastal sediments and emission factors from the industrial process. The disposal of industrial wastes has increased the deposition of Zn and Cd in the adjacent coastal environment by factors approximating 200-fold, and has altered the relationship between Zn and Cd in coastal sediments.
