Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to determine the extent of nicotine use among adolescents in grades VII and VIII. Methods: A diagnostic survey method was used to conduct the research, the technique used was a questionnaire and the research tool was a survey questionnaire. Results: Of the 90 people taking part in the survey, twenty-six-or 28.89%-responded that they had taken nicotine, whether in the form of a traditional cigarette or in the form of an electronic cigarette-so-called an e-cigarette. In the study area, in contrast to data from a 2016 survey commissioned by the Ministry of Health on cigarette and e-cigarette smoking among young people aged 13-15, there is no prevalence of e-cigarette smokers over traditional cigarette smokers. There is also no gender difference among adolescent smokers - there is an equal split of 50 per cent each between girls and boys. Coclusion: The study gives food for thought on how to better educate young people about the harms of nicotine use. Twenty-six of the ninety people surveyed, or just under 29% of the total, may not seem like an alarming number of nicotine users, but these are very young people, between the ages of 13 and 14, and smoking cigarettes or e-cigarettes at this age can cause very serious damage to their health. Oryginality: In the area of the municipality of Bojanów, where the survey was carried out, there have been no previous studies that aimed to investigate the extent of nicotine use among adolescents in grades VII and VIII.
