Abstract

Effects of shading and mulching on the yield and bud quality of Zingiber mioga were studied. Results indicated that shading could increase the flower bud yield by 4.6 to 19.9%. The treatment of 50~60% shading with nylon net has the best effect on yield, but no enhanceing effect on quality of flower bud. Among the mulching materials, black-silver PE film had the best effect on quality of flower bud with less fiber and crispy pink bud, but has the lower yield by 47.9% due to poor air and moisture permeability. While the mushroom compost mulching have fine granule or powder, it will contaminat the petal after raining or irrigation resulted in low quality and yielding, by 37.6% compared to check plot. Mushroom compost is not a suitable mulching material for mioga culture. Rice hull mulching could slightly reduced flower bud yield by 27.5% compared to control, but it produced better acceptable bud quality.
