Abstract
The present investigation was undertaken to find out a leaching procedure which could selectively free the zinc oxide-bearing phase, formed after a preliminary oxidizing thermal treatment within the waste slag of the Imperial Smelting Process for zinc production. The refiring cycle was devised in order to allow the magnetite-franklinite, Fe 3O 4-ZnFe 2O 4, solid solution grains to grow and remain embedded in a glassy ground mass. A recovery of about 85% of the total zinc available was obtained after 8.5 hours of leaching action of a 2% sulphuric acid solution at 100°C temperature. The solid residue, made primarily of the above mentioned solid solution, after appropriate composition adjustments can be recycled to the zinc-ore-concentrates roasting plants.
