Abstract

TiO2 and Zn-doped TiO2 thin films were prepared by sol gel spin coating technique on glass substrates and their structural, optical and ethanol sensing properties were studied. The films were crystallized into the anatase TiO2 phase after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h. The crystallite size of TiO2 and Zn-doped TiO2 films were in the range of 4–18 nm. The band gaps were in the range: 3.55–3.65 eV. The surface electrical resistivity TiO2 decreased drastically by 1.36 × 10−4 Ω−1 cm−1 on doping with 2 at% of Zn. The ethanol response of films was measured at room temperature (30 °C) and it is found that Zn doping produces a large enhancement in ethanol response. The sample 1.5 at% Zn-TiO2 shows peak response of 44.18 for 500 ppm ethanol. The response and recovery time improve significantly with Zn doping in TiO2.
