Abstract

Introduction: Zinc deprivation is known to cause decreased wound healing and increased susceptibility to infection. Macrophages play an essential role in tissue remodeling, antigen presentation, and inflammatory responses, through a number of processes for which zinc is essential. How macrophages modulate zinc transport to meet the demand for zinc in the face of zinc deprivation has not been fully elucidated. However, a number of transporters for zinc import to the cytoplasm (Zip) and export from the cytoplasm (ZnT) have been described, and modulation of zinc transporter expression is altered in other cell types in zinc deficient mice.
