Abstract

The Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has recently caused global concern. Through 2019, the ZIKV epidemic has appeared in more than 80 countries and territories around the world. In Asia, Vietnam is the most recent country to suffer a ZIKV epidemic, which started in late March 2016. There were 236 patients infected with ZIKV, and most were found in the Southern region. Aedes mosquitoes were the main vectors of ZIKV transmission in Vietnam. Although the ZIKV infection in Vietnam mostly causes mild symptoms, the occurrence of more serious complications (i.e., microcephaly in a newborn baby) may put community health in jeopardy. Information on the ZIKV epidemic in this country is still limited, and there may be delays in detecting and reporting new cases. In this chapter, we will provide information on the biology of ZIKV as well as its transmission and pathology in Vietnam. Also, we will discuss difficulties and provide our viewpoints in controlling this infection in this country.
