Abstract

This study aims at identifying the opinions of class teachers of mentally disabled on the school program of the education application schools and vocational training centers and the methods they use in teaching. Semi-structured interview, which one of qualitative research methods, have been used in the study. 11 class teachers of mentally disabled, serving at education application school and vocational school, have participated in the study. Data was collected with the interview form, prepared by the authors, which contained interview questions for which expert opinions have been obtained. Data obtained with the interview method was analyzed with the inductive analysis technique. The study results have shown that the teachers believed that the contents of the lessons included into the program and the textbooks were inadequate; that more emphasis should be placed on communal and social skills, early education, language and speech, physical education, music and drawing lessons; that religion lessons should not be given by branch teachers; and it has been observed that some the teachers were not fully cognizant on methods used in special education.
