Abstract

Optical absorption and Zeeman effect measurements on La(Pr)Cl3 show a zero magnetic field splitting of the degenerate Pr3+ levels\(I^3 H_4 (\bar \mu = \pm 2)\) and\(a^3 P_1 (\bar \mu = \pm 1)\). The site symmetry of the Pr3+ ions is lowered fromC3h toCs. The resultant splittings of the doublet levels are:I3H4:2|Tak|=(0.12±0.05)cm−1;a3P1:2|Tal|=(0.10±0.05)cm−1.
