Abstract

Present surface wave existence theory rests on the assumption that the slowness curve has nonzero curvature at the point corresponding to the limiting wave. The existence theory is extended to take the possibility of zero curvature transonic states into account. It is concluded that a subsonic free surface wave solution always exists in the case of a zero curvature transonic state.
