Abstract

Objective: Eclampsia is a rare but life-threatening complication of the HELLP-syndrome. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the brain have been described in patients with eclampsia but there are few data on CT and MRI findings in patients with eclampsia and the HELLP-syndrome. Methods: We reviewed CT and MRI scans of the brain in three patients with the HELLP-syndrome and seizures during or after delivery. Results: All three patients had marked abnormalities in both the CT and MRI scans, mainly in the region of the posterior cerebral artery. The lesions were more pronounced at MRI than at CT. The imaging findings did not correlate with the severity of the clinical symptoms. Two of the patients underwent a repeat scan at 4 months and both had normal findings. Conclusions: We recommend early use of MRI in pregnant patients with unclear neurologic symptoms in order to identify cerebral abnormalities not associated with pregnancy.
