Abstract

This article is prepared with the aim to determine the importance of social support for the mothers of the children who have special needs and how this support can be provided. Social support, which helps the individual to deal with negative situations, is an important need for life. Individuals of the society may be in need of social support from time to time. Having a child with special needs is one of these situations. Under these circumstances, social support for mothers has an undeniable importance. It is observed that the difficulty in caring children with special needs triggers mothers’ depression and mothers are more anxious about their children than fathers. Therefore, it is found out that the mothers are more affected by the social support they receive compared to fathers. Social support is a multidimensional structure, and can be grouped into two general headings as Emotional Support and Instrumental Support. This support can be provided through Parent Support Group and Internet Sources.
