Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the cases of phonosyntactic reinforcement which are present in Abruzzese dialect, to see how they fit into the picture of the different types of phonosyntactic reinforcement to be found in other Italian dialects, and to examine and evaluate, in the light of this analysis, the principal hypotheses about its historical origins. The analysis is based on data collected by the author in the township of Tollo (in the province of Chieti), which have been compared with those recorded in the «Dizionario abruzzese e molisano» by Ernesto Giammarco and with the information on the subject contained in other works on Abruzzese dialect, on regional Italian in Abruzzo, and on the dialects and the regional Italian of the centre and south of Italy as a whole. There is a need for more studies of this kind, conducted in other dialect areas, to establish precisely the systems of phonosyntactic reinforcement that exist there and to help us resolve the debate about the causes and the evolution of the phenomenon
