Abstract

Modern radiotherapy methods allow to contain a wider range of patients with adverse changes located in organs at risk. It is important to analyze advantages and disadvantages of every single technique in order to choose an appropriate treatment plan for every specific clinical case which provides a chance of recovery. AimComparison of dose distributions parameters for IMRT and 3D CRT techniques used in radiotherapy for prostate cancer and cancer located in the head and neck region. Histograms and conformity indexes are the main comparison method of radiotherapy techniques. Treatment plan of six randomly selected patient for each diagnosis has been analyzed and compiled for each technique. Materials and Methods24 treatment plans was evaluated in order to compare the two techniques 3D CRT and IMRT and prepared in Treatment Planning System. In this study six clinical cases of prostate cancer and cancer in the head or neck region was analyzed. The main method of treatment plans’ comparison created in Treatment Planning System was histograms and conformity indexes. In this work three conformity index was used: Conformity Index (CIRTOG), Health Tissue Conformity Index (HTCI) and Conformation Number (CN). ResultsThe dose distributions for target volume of 3D CRT and IMRT techniques are comparable, while for organ at risk IMRT technique is more comparable. Values of conformity indexes for patients irradiated on head and neck cancers, show superiority of IMRT technique. The analyze of histograms confirms this. For a patients irradiated on prostate cancers the values of conformity index were ambiguous. Furthermore there were different from analyze of histograms. ConclusionThe conformity indexes are helpful methods of analyze of plans but insufficient for reliable assessment. For a patients irradiated on head and neck cancers IMRT technique is dedicated. Whereas for area of prostate 3D CRT and IMRT techniques are relatively good.
