Abstract

Piezoelectric surgery is a relatively new branch of medicine used for osteotomies and osteoplasties. It uses microvibrations to selective cutting of bones without damaging surrounding soft tissues. Created mainly for the purposes of maxillofacial surgery and dental implantology, it is increasingly used in otorhinolaryngology. This article describes the possibilities of using piezoelectric instruments in the field of otorhinolaryngology. It can be useful in surgeries such as: endoscopic sinus surgery, rhinoplasty, septoplasty, conchoplasty, otosurgery or laryngeal surgery. Piezosurgery has been compared with traditional surgical methods in several studies. Numerous advantages of this technique as well as its limitations in the field of otorhinolaryngological surgery have been presented. Concluding piezosurgery is prommising surgical method in otorhinolaryngology area, although further investigation is needed.
